After watching this - I wrote this song as a tribute to TVZ (and Guy Clark) The Sun Is Burning Out ( Tribute to Townes Van Zandt) } James Kenyon [Em] When he was just a little boy, he was taught to follow rules He combed his hair n’ brushed his teeth [B7 ] he even shined his shoes He [Em] always said “why thank you m’aam”, n' went to [Am] church every week He [Em] learned that when his grampa’s talkin’, he [B7] better wait his turn to [Em]speak . [Em]He opened doors for the ladies , n’ bowed his head for prayer He proudly said pledge allegiance [B7] And made sure he didn’t swear Oh he [Em] said grace at the dinner table , n’ he [Am]never, ever was late He [Em] kept his elbows off the table and he [B7] always sat up real [Em] straight (Instrumental stuff) [Am] [Em] [Am] [B7] [Em] . [Em] He studied hard and got good grades, but one day at his school The teacher told him that the sun’s burning out [B7] And he felt just like a fool And [Em] from that moment in his life, ya see [Am]everything got changed well [Em]something snapped inside his head, [B7] and those rules were broken [Em] chains yea [B7]something snapped inside his head, and those rules were broken [Em] chains {soc} And he said… [Em] Excuse me teacher did I hear you say That the sun is burning [B7] out ? Why would I want to live that way when every day's in [Em] doubt [Em]I’m not waiting for the end of the world I ain’t playing by no [Am] rules [B7] I’m living my life the way I want because This world’s a ship of [Em] fools . [Em]Now everybody heed Townes' words, he was right, times running out You know we ain’t gonna live forever [B7]believe it, there a'int no doubt So [Em] cherish every day you have, as [Am] time goes by so fast En[Em]joy your life the best you can, 'n [B7] make every moment [Em]last . [Em] Excuse me teacher did I hear you say That the sun is burning [B7] out ? Why would I want to live that way when every day's in [Em] doubt [Em]I’m not waiting for the end of the world I ain’t playing by no [Am] rules [B7] I’m living my life the way I want because This world’s a ship of [Em] fools [B7] Well don’t expect me to live that way This world’s a ship of [Em] fools (Instrumental stuff) [Am] [Em] [Am] [B7] [Em] {c: much slower} [B7] I’m living my life the way I want This world’s a ship of [Em] fools. {c: slide the Em chord up and down neck to end}

I knew someone who was close to Guy. Basically said Guy was talented but hard to like and lacked humility. I never met Guy, but I knew my friend _real_ well. Good judge of character, not given to trash talk. PS: Speak ill of the dead? Who cares? They're dead. They're not watching you with their heavenly laptop, judging your comments. Guy is doing it to Townes and I'm doing it to Guy. IF this is a big deal for you, you need to leave the house more often.

Because nailing yourself into a bedroom is a rational, adult response to a badly-behaved houseguest. Talking like he wasn't as drunk and belligerant as TVZ was? Now that's some ego.

Who would laugh or pick on the likes of Guy Clark? He looks like he could kick the skinny Townes Van Zandt ass easily. I guess Guy liked and respected him too much. Great little Townes story at the end. Two greats -- that have passed away. Too many great singer-songwriters to mention Tim Hardin, Tim Buckley, David Blue, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Phil Ochs, Harry Nilsson, Fred Neil, Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny, Laura Nyro, Judee Sill, Bobby Darin, and Dory Previn -- they all left a little piece of their talent behind for us.
