Chris Squire was a musical genius, when he joined with Jon Anderson and later with Bill Buford laid the foundation of there Super Group . You can see how he added orchestration and members of original Yes members. Tony Kaye and Bill Buford. I still say Squire is the greatest bass player ever

@@wendellwiggins3776 he has since tried to explain it further, noting that there is a difference between being in a band, and being a "hired gun" to play on someone else's record. I think that distinction made this collaboration different. He has said he admires Chris's musical ability, and obviously they are a great pair to have in a recording studio (personalities aside).

A lot of the reason Chris didn't do another solo album (or rather, a non-Yes album) for so long was because he knew it would be hard to top this. He even went into a studio in the early 2000s with Billy Sherwood and other friends and did a videotaped, live re-recording of "Hold Out Your Hand" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHfahIGtiaaEbtk) that was part of a FOOW deluxe reissue. It WAS very cool that Chris was able to get Bill for this album. In some ways Chris was helping Bill out, who in 1975 was at loose ends, doing session work for people like Roy Harper and Gong after Robert Fripp had pulled the plug on King Crimson.

IIRC this is the song that has the most feeling of being on a journey on this album. I especially like all of the various keyboard work and the drumming in this one.

The middle section is basically just Squire, Moraz, and Bruford jamming. Some of my favorite music ever right there. I could definitely listen to that forever. I do wish the end was a little shorter, it sort of goes on a bit longer than absolutely necessary. Still cool, especially after the speed and power of the middle section to bring it down like that to more of a meditative soundscape, and then back to the orchestration. But perhaps a minute or two too long. The only place guitar is played on the album is there in the last movement of this song and in the last song on the album, Safe. Chris is playing a 12-string. The liner notes say that Mel Collins is on this track playing tenor sax, but i know he also plays flute, and that sure sounds like a flute on this track to me. I don't think I've ever caught the tenor sax line in 45 years listening to this song.

My favorite song from the album, such a kick ass bass line. My only complaint is Moraz's organ solo is a little low in the mix.

Fantastic composition. My fav. so far. Andrew Price Jackman seems to add alot to the arrangement. Never heard of a plectrum... I do miss Steve, and Howe!

I'm aware I'm being pretentious, but this is another case of an artist not understanding their own song. The intro is gorgeous, and they should have kept it simple. Instead they went the epic route and lost their way. Because breaking it down, there isn't much melody, and the chord changes are really basic beneath all the ornamentation. But the sound of the thing is fantastic, with that orchestration. Editing it down to an actual song (instead of a symphony) would have made the entire thing much more intimate.

If it’s your song then whatever you do to it is the right thing. Later, you might amend that, but at the time it’s how the song is supposed to go. I have many versions of songs I written because most of them are 40 years old now. 😢 and how I play them now is not the same as when I was 20. Different musicians different life experiences. But, how I recorded them then was how the song was supposed to go. Not sure if I made a good point or not. Need more coffee I think

@@yar9333 I think I get what you're saying, and I appreciate it. I slightly disagree, still. For example, when Roger Nichols wrote "We've Only Just Begun", he decided to sell it as a car commercial jingle; when Richard Carpenter heard it, he turned it into a full-fledged classic. This is the point I want to make. Of course, "Just Begun" is a lot better composition than "Silently Falling".

@@EnoVarma ok, fair enough, good point., with one possible caveat. IF “Just Begun” was written purposefully as a jingle he achieved his goal and didn’t need to take it any further. But totally agree it’s a a great great song and I’m so glad that Richard took it so much farther. Well, this is actually nice having a respectful difference of opinion with good conversation about a topic we obviously both love and care about deeply. So tired of all the nastiness out there. Even when I was complaining about Mark Knopfler’s vocals I tried to still make it somewhat light. I don’t understand why people can’t disagree and still be friendly. My roommate and I are complete opposites on everything, like the old odd couple tv show (I’m the slob by the way) but we get along fine. So, thanks for sharing your thoughts and engaging meaningful conversation.

Im glad you landed on this album. When i first bought it i was expeectimg squire to show off and do a lot of stuff like his solo on yessongs. I was so facinated and pleasantly surprised that he restrained his aggressive side and put together a serious and mature album. Now 2024 and these songs have held up well over the test of time, i think because it really sounds like hes exposing parts of himself emotionally. I neever heard or read an interview where he really explained why he never did another solo album. Theres a video of him 20-30 years later listening to the entire album and commenting as each song was playing. In parts of the video he seems to get lost in his thoughts and memories reminiscing about that time. I couldnt tell whether he was happy or sad but looking back was affecting him. I often wondered whether making this album took a lot out of him.
