Chris Squire is one of the best bass players I've ever heard. The way he can wrap a groove around a solid beat is unparalleled. His vocals are not too shabby, either.

Chris was famous for using a pick to play his lead or harmony bass, but he also used his thumb holding the pick to give a fuller or double thump to the strings. He also used his other fingers to pluck the bass strings in a more traditional manner so it’s definitely okay to air bass in the regular way!!! Chris also played the strings in different places on the bass to change the sound as much as his peddle effects.

I recommend the YT video of Chris playing this and other FOOW songs along with Bruford and a full orchestra-. It shows him in his element and you can tell he's enjoying himself immensely. Also, another YT video of him interpreting this album and giving some personal anecdotes, in which his humour and basic human goodness shines through. Chris was an impressive individual in all respects. Nice job again Nick n Lex.

Ladies and gentlemen the genius behind Yes Chris Squire. Chris was Yes, from 68 to his passing. He won best bass player 6 yrs straight in Guitar magazine. And to think that Keith Emmerson asked Squire to join him but Chris didn't want to sing lead. Or it could have been Emmerson Palmer and Squire!

Mel Collins on Sax Alto sax (Main part of song) and Soprano sax (solo) on this one. Remember, this was after Robert Fripp disbanded King Crimson. So not only was Bill Bruford a past member of Yes, he was also a past member of King Crimson (at this time) and so was Mel Collins who had played on In The Wake of Poseidon, Lizard, Islands and Red. Andrew Pryce Jackman on electric piano. Just a note...Mel Collins also plays on a few 'Camel' albums and you've done two tracks from 'The Snow Goose'.

All the solo albums from this period of Yes history are exceptional. They include The Steve Howe Album, Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow and Alan White's Ramshackled. I think Wakeman's Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is from this time as well.

Who needs a guitar when you have a bass player that plays his instrument like a guitar. There is an interview video on KZbin that was made in the later 80s/ early 90s (based on clothing and hair styles) where he explains why he didn't play guitar. He said his hands were too big and that's why he chose to learn and master the bass. If you look at the cover of The Yes Album, he is standing between Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. He was a full head taller than Jon. I would like to know just how tall the man was.

@@fredericmondor8683 In the 70's when I bought the album [ Triple vinyl ] It was an event in itself. Triple live was massive back then. As for a bass solo. What ? Drum yes. Keyboard yes. Lead guitar yes....Bass ? It's 4 strings and not a lead guitar. How can you do a solo ? Strings are too thick to bend. Lol ...Hey I was still a teenager. Noone had done it that I had heard & why would you ? Dum de dum de dum ? .... Oh boy ! It totally blew my mind !!! It was everything but dum de dum. Incredible solo !!!! & I always play the full thing with Long Distance Runaround leading into it.

Patrick moraz on keyboards and Bill bruford on drums formerly played with Yes. In 75 moraz was the official keyboard of the band and had played on "relayer" one year earlier. Moraz is giving yhe rhythm and Bruford plays on the snare on the second and 4 th time... Before changing.

Just a suggestion unrelated to this Squire...can you react to Band Maid? I´m curious what you think two think of it. I´m a progrock fan first, but I also like rock, hardrock and metal in general. Band Maid is all that and they incorporate some proggy elements in their usually 4 minute songs. They are standout musicians and great songwriters: yes, sometimes a little poppy, but always excellently layered songs and catchy chorus.

Lovely reactions, as usual. It was fun to watch you assimilate to the groove: seven to the bar, the clue being in the title (although there are an extra two beats at the end of the chorus to confuse you, haha); the electric piano riff keeps you anchored to the count. I believe Chris played a Telecaster bass - he complained later in life that he thought someone had stolen it; the sound and tone are quite different from the bass on the majority of his work. Obviously - or crucially? - you need to listen to Jon Anderson's 'Olias of Sunhillow'. If you do, I suggest you do the whole album, as, while there are tracks/songs, it really has to be heard as a whole. The word 'unique' is overdone and misused a lot, but this album truly is, I think, unlike anything else you'll have heard (apart, perhaps, from 'We Have Heaven' on the Fragile album)

I first bought this on 8 track tape from the discount bin at Wal Martin in 1980. I was 15 and just learning to play bass. About this same time is when I first heard Rush & The Dixie Dregs. They all really got me pumped about the bass. I still love listening to it all and I still love to play.

He did play a session for jazz saxaphonist Eddie Harris in 1974 (along with Alan White, Tony Kaye, and Steve Winwood), but he never proved himself to be a convincing jazz player. And that's OK. You hire him to do what he does, not be someone he's not.

Conspiracy has two albums: Chris Squire and Billy Sherwood who took over for Squire in Yes when the Master passed away. There are a lot of other Squire projects available - check out Run Like The Fox, a Christmas single put out by Squire and Alan White, and "Squackett" (I think I spelled that right) a whole album of Steve Hackett and Chris Squire... so much goodness there.

The band Conspiracy, his collaboration with Billy Sherwood, released 2 studio albums, the self-titled and the second one, called "The Unknown", and also a live DVD. As for the band Esquire, Chris didn't take part on that band. It was a group formed by his ex-wife Nikki with some other guys, and Nikki asked Chris to add little inserts as backup vocals on a few songs, just that.

One of the smoothest implementations of 7/8 in the intro and early vocal section - it doesn't get the "loping" feel of most odd time signatures until Chris' bass becomes more prominent after the first vocal section! The musicians for this track (other than Chris, obviously) were: Bill Bruford on drums (Bill had left Yes to join King Crimson by this time, but agreed to do this album with Chris) Mel Collins on saxophone (Mel had been a member of King Crimson, but by this time had left KC was doing a great deal of session work: from this album, Mel would go on to work with The Alan Parsons Project and Camel, among others) Patrick Moraz on keyboards (Patrick was, at the time the keyboardist for Yes)

My favorite bass player with his super punchy expressive sound which was far more than the '64 Rickenbacker Rotosound roundwound strings combo. It was the irreplaceable Squire. Chris equaled Yes and was the first thing that captured everyone's interest from the third album (Yes/Yes) and later. That wonderful visceral (gutbucket) and elastic inevitable river-like lines, caused Steve Howe in the early days to say: "You couldn't really question Chris' playing because there was such a "rightness" in what he did." #NickNLex monthly request: Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East. Either the standard single CD or the deluxe double CD version. When this album first came out Rolling Stone magazine called it one of greatest live performances ever captured. 50 years later the original band is still greatly loved and admired. This particular album had such a giant impact because ABB was utterly musically unique and powerful. They combined blues, rock and jazz into a wonderful gumbo. Duane Allman their lead slide guitarist, became the most in demand session player around. He recorded with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs and Derek and the Dominos to name just a few artists. Dickey Betts was the other lead guitarist who also handled rhythm. Berry Oakley the bassist was so good that Oteil Burbridge from Dead and Company summed him up in one word: "revolutionary." Bassist Oteil said at times Berry would sound like the third guitar because like the really gifted bass players will take on a lead-like approach at times when the situation calls for it. Beyond individual players, the whole band was rock solid and used all their power in a smartly artistic way. No doubt they were one of the top bands that sprang up in America. The Allman Brothers Band first album came out in 1969 and hit like a ton of bricks with a musical identity that was fully formed. These guys had "it" from the get-go and everyone knew it. At Fillmore East caught the band in full stride and peak form and that's why this album, then as well as now, is viewed with such reverence. Like Jimi Hendrix, the original ABB had a brief lifespan, but oh didn't they make a big splash and shine a bright light?!!

It's a shame Squire hasn't made more solo albums. (of course there were still a few projects outside of Yes). This song is called "Lucky Seven" (among other things) because it is largely written in 7/8 time. It's a pity you didn't listen to the album page by page, because the songs mostly flow into each other. Still, it would be great if you could hear the remaining two songs "Silently Falling" and "Safe" as well. For some, these two songs are too long-winded, but if you listen properly, you can tell that something new is constantly happening.

I remember when a friend of mine first told me about this album back when I was in high school. I'll never forget him calling me and going on about how jazzy this album was. In retrospect it's not THAT jazzy. Putting sax on your funky rock track doesn't turn it into a jazz piece. But funk is hard enough for someone raised in the 60s British rock and pop tradition to tackle, and I think Chris acquitted himself well during the mid-70s.
