I think your comments are totally valid with regards to technical critiques BUT and it's a big but. A bike is not like a car, the biggest impact that something has on ride quality and feel is the rider and specifically their weight and their limb lengths. It' s a subjective rather than objective test. Picking up on what Chris said, he is absolutely right where he refers to the heavier rider. The "mass spring damper" characteristics of someone who is larger will be quite different to someone who weighs in at 65kg. Hence for my reviews, I tend to leave the subjective bits to a minimum, if people want "faster, stiffer, lighter, holds it's speed well", they only need to look to the Shill channels

As we already know that Wheels, bike fit and riding position, jersey, socks, and helmet matters more on aerodynamic than frame..It still baffles me that people regards X frame may “holds it’s speed better”…speed, momentum, and inertia will be held better by heavier, deeper wheels…and heavier rider

Just to balance this. I’m 59 and 4 hrs on a turbo music is essential. A bit of AC/DC on my Sony Walkman, or later TOOL on my CD was essential. ps to paraphrase Angus AC/DC did not do 16 albums that all sounded the same, they did 17!

@@ChrisMillerCycling music is good when you learn how not to listen to it. Each song has a time frame and we know this. That's why getting lost in your thoughts allows you to go harder during your interval See I know all this because I'm a sports scientist.

I’m just barely older than 22 and I’m 100% with Chris on headphones while riding. Since I got back into road cycling a year ago I’ve not listened with headphones once while riding even on a couple of 3+ hour solo rides. My regular rides are around the 2 hour mark. I’ve struggled a lot with mental health and initially it was really tough being alone with just with my thoughts and no stimuli from my phone but now I love it as it helps me process things going on in my life. Even when my mind goes to a dark place, when I push through it to finish my ride I feel much stronger mentally. Granted I might be weird for my age but I’d like to think that a broad category of people like “Gen Z Roadies” aren’t a monolith.

I'm 63 and I do 4-5 hr rides and many times I don't even bring a phone. When I do bring my phone, I only pull it out once or twice to take pictures. I never ever check messages or email. When I ride, its 100% me time, I do not let anything in, accept the passing scenery. Always been that way, when I left work, I left the office behind. When the ride was over and I was showered, I would return calls or messages. On the subject of "supplements" that work, I can confirm the the real stuff (on the list) does work, really well.

Totally agree Chris re headphones 'dulling' your experience of riding. How is your breathing? How do your legs feel? How should i take that corner coming up etc etc. I use music when doing hard intervals on the trainer, else i never wear them. That's including on long 4hr+ rides in kangaroo Valley area. I'm 38 though so just another old man's opinion on this one!

As for headphones: I'm 38 and during most training rides, I'll be listening to either music or Tour De France live reporting. Bone conduction headphones like Shokz have been a revelation, since you can still hear traffic and everything and you can easily switch them on and off depending on how much attention you want or need to spend to your surroundings. Plus you never have a feeling of earplugs sticking in your ears.

Hi Chris, it’s not the first-time a Pro Conti Team (PCT) now called ProTour (PRT) has been invited to the TDU since it became a WT race in 2008. In 2010 BMC (who were PCT at the time) were invited as Cadel was the reigning World Race Champion, and in 2014/2015 Drapac Professional Cycling (who were an Australian registered PCT) were invited as the TDU had a policy that if there is an Australia registered PCT it would receive a wildcard without question.

I’m currently in the Andes in Colombia for 3mths working remotely and training. Back in Brisbane I’m head down headphones in, but here I’ve made an effort to become that chatty Cathy dude on the road talking to randoms😅. After a month ive improved my Spanish a lot and got a huge group of riding mates, invited to all sorts of events on and off the bike. It has highlighted what’s missing in strava like you talked about last ep. I’ll chat with someone on the road, they’ll turn off and then if we want to contact each other later - have to find a segment we both rode and look at the today leaderboard. Then put a public comment on their activity to take the chat to Instagram or phone text. It was previously much easier when the vast majority of ppl had flybys turned on by default.

I ride with headphones (music) the majority of the time, I am 56 years old. I enjoy the music while I am riding. I do and can ride just fine without music. One interesting observation that I have had is that when I pass another cyclist, both overtaking them and riding the opposite direction (on a bike path) I will always do some type of a greeting, a wave, a 'hi', etc. When I ride without headphones and can actually hear what the other person is saying, I often think to myself, 'what am I missing by having these headphones in?' I do believe that the music or whatever you are listening to provides a level of distraction, what I am pondering is if that distraction is an overall positive or negative effect? I certainly am not addicted to the distractions of social media, email, etc. I will never pickup my phone to check anything while out on a ride...I guess that is a benefit of being old!
@out_spocken
@out_spocken Жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll ever miss out on anything exciting in the way of a passing greeting by having earphones in. It's fleeting. A wave and smile do the same thing. Acknolwedgement of the other person. Re distractions...I'm an introvert so find the bombardment of sound in the city and urban areas of cars taxing and stressful. So I always wear earphones unless I'm on a group ride or on high traffic cycling paths. The amount of times having earphones in has saved me from wankheads beeping their horns or yelling at me when passing just coz or to be a smart arse has saved me from plenty of frights...and even with them in they are still a shock. Anything to the side or front of me I can see. Anything behind me is either going to give me way...or hit me. Realistically a mirror would be a far far far far FAAAAR better thing to have than your ears, because you can see exactly what anything behind you is doing. And not just cars,, but other cyclists. It's surprising that 'looking cool' has meant most cyclists don't use mirrors on their helmets or bars. In a perfect world it'd be great to have a head unit link to a rear camera so you could always have a view of the rear without having to look back.

I'm 39 and I usually wear headphones on longer rides, but there are times when I'm in the mood not to. Most of the time I'm riding to turn my brain off. That's the way I look at it. I also switch back and forth between wired and wireless headphones. Sometimes it's nice having one less battery to worry about. The wire itself doesn't bother me too much. To me, the main benefit of wireless is being able to pause audio with the touch of a finger.

A lot of the "drug" problems seem to be with anti-inflammatory medication which leads me to believe that a lot of these pros seem to really rag and push their thyroids to the absolute extreme. I tried this once pushing my vitamin B12 intake to close to 2000mg per day and ate/drank high car and testosterone promoting food and drink for 4 months. my athletic performance improved vastly my 10min FTP went from 370 to close to 630 ( with a strict training routine ). It felt amazing until my thyroid began to crash three months in, first it was the jaw aches (I thought it was a bad tooth but it wasn't) then there was the sweats, the very broken sleep and the extreme weight loss; going from 86kg to 73kg in a few weeks was mad but felt really good. Crashing made me extremely dependant on Ibuprofen and sleeping meds taking over 2000mg Ibuprofen per day to deal with the pain. All in all the experience was interesting but extremely intense but it made little to no improvement to my anaerobic fitness and stamina as I wasn't able to consistently hold 400-600w for beyond 25mins. But the whole experiment taught me that you need to be working on the basics as even with a strict dietary regiment and coached training routine without those basics you can't truly take advantage of your peak fitness and physical output and consistently deliver on your performance. It got me hooked but I plan to try this once again when cycling season begins, but for now I'd rather not deal with a busted thyroid when there's no real competition or aim fighting the pain and the aches made me feel like a pro but at what cost? Overall I don't there's an issue with taking over the counter meds that are UCI legal to improve your athletic performance, it can be dangerous but the reward in this case depending on how you look at it really do outweigh the risk and it is worth a punt but with medical oversight from a doctor or medically trained professional to avoid some of the risks

Always interesting conversation to hear experienced people talk about doping. I think before any conversation though we need to call out what we're now classing as "Doping", is it taking a banned substance or is it simply finding some new solution to boost performance. If it's not banned, but someone could take a magic banana that gave them +10% W/Kg, then we're saying happy days right?

@out_spocken
@out_spocken Жыл бұрын
A piece of bark can take down a rider though? So.... And there is calling and yelling. I agree that yelling at the top of your lungs so the whole group hears you around houses isn't great vs everyone passing down a call without yelling. That said...sometimes a call doesn't get passed down quick enough so hearing it from the front and being prepared for it is far better than being surprised by it and possibly coming down. Yelling cyclists are still quieter than cars/trucks.

Never cycle with headphones in, enjoy being in my own head on a ride. Even on interval training though I just enjoy trying to nail the interval data on my Wahoo and focus completely on what I'm doing. However, I do recognise that I'm quite simplistic in the sense that I only do things one at a time, my thought gets quite distorted and flustered if there's too much going on at once.

Lance has said a number of times that in his experience EPO was essentially a flat 10% boost in power. While I do think pros are still doping, albeit not as much so that they can fool tests and avoid the health risks discovered during the 90's, you're right that it doesn't seem ridiculous to think that training and especially tech could lead to speed increases akin to the 10% power boost from EPO. While this would likely never happen, I would love to see Jonas, Pidcock, or Pogi hop on one of Lance's or Pantani's bikes from back in the day and do some climbs just to see what the difference the tech actually makes is.

Not sure there is a relationship between age and whether you like listening to music or not. Personal preference. I know plenty of the older gen that have music on in the background as they go about their daily activities, go walking, gardening etc. The question I have is where do you ride and do you not find city and urban street 'noise' not so much stressful, but certainly not relaxing vs sticking in some buds and music to cut out or down that 'human buzz'?

Supplements, as a weight lifter of a decade or so before getting into cycling. I've only ever taken legal substances but find it an interesting philosophy, how we choose where to draw the line. There may be banned substances but sports teams will push the boundaries as clear as they dare to gain an edge. E.g What if you're on the low level of testosterone and you supplement to bring yourself up to normal levels? Nothing coming up in blood work, etc. Supplementation tip: buy some protien storage stacks that unscrew. Make 1 tower per day and add your supplements to the protien. No additional fuss!

re: conversation about supplements-- I think this is the larger issue with performance focused cycling to begin with. Perhaps I'm speaking to the wrong crowd here, but I just don't really understand it. I ride my bike because: I like being fit. I like going outside. It's a good way to see the world and get around, and it's an engaging path to discover new things in life (photography, active meditation, mechanics etc). When you're solely focused on performance-- to whatever end, be it professional sponsorship or something else-- a logical pattern of thinking arises that says, 'yeah, maybe I should dope, or take steroids' or what have you, because the end goal isn't riding. It's monetary compensation for riding. Or fame or clout because of winning on a bike. It changes the reason you ride forever. What is the point in taking something if you're a) going to become dependent on it, and b) never going to make it as a pro anyway. You may as well ride your bike-- still push yourself!!-- but know what your limits are naturally and accept that end. It's much more fun experience after performance. I promise you that.

Always ride with earphones in for a few reasons. 1. cuts out most of the vehicle sounds and ambient noises. 2. Stops me almost falling off my bike when wankheads beep their horn just 'coz' with no intent as a warning and safety for me. 3. Dealing with PTSD and fatigue, music is often the only thing that keeps me going and my spirits up. It's plenty easy to cut out the music and focus on my thoughts when I want to...they really just deadens the noise from life. Granted on country roads or tracks or areas away from cars and people I love taking them out and enjoying the sounds of nature...but that doesn't happen much in Melbourne...and I'd rather them in and not be shocked by a random car than leave them out and get shocked. For all the 'it's not safe' crowd....I don't see how you can protect yourself knowing a car is behind you. I assume one always is or do head checks if I'm cycling off my line. If a car is going to hit be from behind it aint going to matter if I have headphones in or not. The rest of the time the danger comes from the side or front...and I have eyes for that. Only time I don't wear earphones is in group rides or busy cycling routes where I need to be conscious of other cyclists calling out safety instructions/warnings.

I’ve never used headphones on a ride. I find I’m always interested in what’s going on around me and have too many thoughts going through my head. Also riding on mainly country roads I’d prefer to be able to hear cars

Regards to doping, it’s happening. Gosh if people are taking Steroids such as Testosterone, anavar and pre hormones for recovery and strength. Cortico-steroids to inhibit “pain” or pain meds like tramadol they seriously raise your tolerance to a point pain from exercise is removed. Methylenblue, Vit B injections are a sign of the tipping point where riders are willing to experiment with concoctions for “that edge”. I raced on painkillers (opioids)my Watts where 11% higher held over an hour. When you add tech upgrades, aero, doping theirs your answer. Ever heard of ITTP it raises blood oxygenation levels and used in horse races errrm and cycling!!!

I totally agree on hand signals. I don’t point any hazards out that isn’t alive. Guys who are constantly pointing stiff out are usually the ones causing crashes by crashes themselves. Having one hand on the bar might have something to do with it. I’m a mountain biker so when I’m on the road I just hop over shit

Never used headphones whilst riding as a solo rider. Now I’m a stoker at national racing level on a tandem you can’t wear headphones because you need to hear the instructions from your pilot. You need to be in tune with your surroundings.

I caught up with a bunch a few weeks ago. I had been pushing hard so I figured I would just sit on for a mile. They were so loud, calling out every little thing. I lasted about 20 seconds and then went full gas to get away. I think my HR actually dropped, even pushing hard, after I cleared that noise. 😂

Wired headphones last as long as I need to ride (ie 10+hrs). I've got a set of bluetooth ones but only use them for short rides (essentially commutes). They're also one less bloody thing to charge. They're also bloody cheap so I don't care if I break or loose them.

Love the bunch ride criticisms, was behind a guy the other day, he saw a big rock at the side of the road and just emergency braked with no warning to move it off the road, I went straight into his back wheel, luckily we did not fall off. Our club has very little bunch ride discipline, I tend to ride with the smaller groups, the big bunch groups do that anti-car arrogance thing which I hate.

Creatine just gave me massive cramps, headaches and held water. Hand signals are enough for a group ride, if you don't see the signals you are not looking where you are going. Airpods for Zone 2 rides

Complete and utter nonsense to justify how fast they’re going now with technology. Are you serious? So going uphill they had alloy, carbon and titanium light frames from the 90’s onwards. Nutrition is better!? Utter rubbish

Estimated i listen 2/3 academically stuff and the rest just music or your podcast. I also wear my headphones due to the windy sounds and cars. With a varia its no problem to not hear the Environment

I hope the peleton is clean and here’s my reason for optimism. The top 10 fastest 10 tour tts are mostly by riders from the doping era. The average speeds of known dopers are still competive today, this is despite the advances in aero and tyre tech. We used to use amphetimenes and full fat Coca Cola in the 80s in our finish bottles. Training camps had steroids and placebos handed out by doctors. But today I dope mostly on sabutomol, it’s unbelievable bottom of a climb 3 puffs and it’s worth 2 minutes on a12minute climb or 4 minutes on a 1500m swim

I think what Jesse said about having a podcast on but thinking over the top of it suggests he doesn’t need the podcast. The great thing about cycling is allows you time and space to let thoughts come and go as needed. It’s a telling sign that younger people say they can’t manage without something to be listening…

the training is better, the nutrition is better and the drugs are better - remember, the science will always be ahead of the testing - they have this so calculated now that if you get caught, you are extremely well you can figure out the rest here....

But in the past the testing always caught up to the drugs eventually. We haven’t really seen evidence of systematic doping for well over a decade now. That’s not to say there isn’t any doping happening, we still hear about tramadol, salbutamol and others but I am doubtful that riders are still going to the levels of a couple of decades ago with loads of EPO, transfusions etc.
