I am not slower than Sam Bennett in a sprint, I just need to generate an additional 1000W for a solid minute at the pointy end of a race. To be honest, all I heard was I am not slower than Sam Bennett.

Horses for courses, slowly moving up from 23 to 32 mm tyres and loving them, ok they might not be as fast but as long as i am not the slowest on the grouprides who cares? And as for heat training its stugging to get above freezing here in the UK. I need heat training like a hole in the head!

Just a comment on Training and Preparing. For instance the upcoming Peaks Challenge in March. Alot of us are doing a bit of both, preparing to ride faster than we ever thought. And training to do the distance. Where you two guys can get away with very little and use sheer natural ability. The vast majority are doing distance over and above what you would ever think of. Also doing the pun VERTS. Its all about klm in the bank for us. We are not all gifted with 400w FTP. And can do 4,5wkg up Hotham. So you need to acknowledge the gulf between yourselves and the rest who are going to be out there for the full 12/13hrs. Personally this is my 2nd attempt after 172klm in oven heat last year. I aim to finish this year, I know I can ride the distance, power is my achilles heel. At 75yo not suprising but I am going to give it a bloody good go..

I want to answer Jesse's Question about why narrower on the rear and wider on the front. I switched from a rim brake bike to a disk brake bike specifically because I love bombing down the twisty switch backs in Northern GA and want the improved modulation stopping power.. For reference I just purchased the No,. 6 45/50 wheels and put on 30mm Continental STRs, 28 internal front and 24 internal rear. When I''m bombing down hill and taking the turns at 25-55mph, there is significantly more weight transferred to the front of my bike and at those higher speeds I really want the wider tire (34.4mm measured) supporting my 195lbs (88kg). The front tire is also flush to the sides of the rim which keeps the wheel and tire combo nice and stable like tires on a properly fitting sports car.... not too wide, not too narrow. We have become so numb to the lightbulb effect on road bikes and it is good to see the pendulum starting to swing the other way. When I'm climbing back up those same hills at 6-12mph the front end of the bike is slightly less loaded and that wide front contact patch theoretically shouldn't create as much rolling resistance compared to flat or downhill terrain. When going uphill at dramatically slower speeds my weight over the back tire provides more traction and I'm ok with it being slightly narrower. Also, the rear wheel and 30mm tire measures an actual 33.1 on the 24mm internal. I'm on a 2022 Pinarello Prince 12spd Ultegra Di2. I only have about 2-2.5mm clearance on each side at my chain stays, if the wheel was wider (both internal and external) and the tire was wider, I simply think it would be too tight. From a maximum traction perspective I prefer the larger rim and tire width in the front with slightly less in the rear. I think this is generally why Mountain Bikes are often setup with a wider front than rear setup also. On my sports cars I run a staggered setup with larger rim widths and tires in the rear, but I also put dramatically more torque to my cars rear tires necessitating the extra width to accelerate in and out of the turns uphill or downhill. If anything I think I could get away with a 28mm tire on the rear.... but like you Jesse, I'd rather maximize compliance and comfort so the 30mm in the rear is there to stay, Another thought is that maybe people should be choosing a tire width based on their weight and then finding the optimal rim to match that tire for the intended application. A lighter rider may never need more than a 28mm tire and anything larger than that might be overkill at the expense of having more mass to accelerate, while a significantly heavier rider might require a significantly wider tire to match the same traction, stability, and load capacity as the lighter rider. Just my 2 cents.

Ive been using the 35mm as my road tire setup on my gravel bike and they are lovely riding tires. For crappy road surface they are fantastic. Have rought 1200k on them and they still look brand new

Bike manufactures that are producing bikes in 2025, or even releasing new models in 2025, with 30mm max tire clearance are crazy.

Hot take: the bike industry needs to sell you a bike every few years and they do this by either telling us our old stuff is slow or just not making said old stuff anymore so we can't replace it easily.

Cargo bibs on my 5hr+ endurance rides and for all Fondo’s has been a revelation for me. The thigh pockets & smaller rear pockets allow me to carry all my hydro tabs and fuel. I don’t feel the items in the pockets whilst riding and accessing a partially eaten bar or some lollies from the thigh pocket is easier than jersey rear pockets. They’re worth a try on your longer rides!

If a tour rider has complained that the teams bikes are too heavy . . you need lighter bikes or ones that hit the 6.8kg limit bang on. Don't think many do and anything over is uneccessarily heavy.

This was perfect. I just received my first smart trainer the other day, and on my first ride this morning I immediately thought I was completely and ridiculously out-of-shape. Then 25 mins later, I was ready to return the thing, or throw it out the window which would have made me feel better temporarily. This video was very helpful in identifying the issue, thank you! I guess I'll keep my smart trainer now and try again tomorrow...

One has to be used to riding on extremely squishy tires to even begin to assume or think that 28mm on 60psi would be the fastest tire width and pressure combo😅

I think more mechanical groupsets are coming, but they're not at all in y'all's space. I think we're gonna see CUES for road this year, and a bunch of indie component makers are working on mechanical groupsets for us hipster types. For example, Growtac has new friction-shifting brifters, and Rivendell is working on a rapid rise derailleur

2 comments, enjoyed the irony of the inappropriate homophobic ad and 30 mins later referring to ‘chicks on bikes’!😂💕 Not sure if your comments on no mass participation at TDU had any effect but seems to be back in 2025, so kudos as it is and should be a cycling festival and road is still largest participation I would expect by multiples, CX?

Re: CGMs - I’ve noticed my blood glucose regulation on the bike is poor when I’m way overreached / overtrained. Lots of peaks up to 200 and dips below 80, and fueling strategies won’t fix it. When training is going well, blood glucose on the bike is stable to the point where I can’t draw any real conclusions about changes in fueling strategies.

Congrats on another nice episode... I have been running 35 mm GP5000 AS TR tyres, at 40 to 50 psi, on the new Canyon Aeroad CFR for the past 6 weeks (yes, they fit!)... Way more comfortable but they definitely do not feel as fast as 28, 30 or 32 mm... I did one crit race with the 35 mm tyres and I felt less confident going around corners fast, maybe because you lose the feel of the road surface... Sprinting and acceleration out of corners was also not nearly as good--the All Season version of the GP5000s are significantly heavier than regular GP5000s... I will probably go back to 32 mm, even before the end of winter... The 35 mm will likely be good for my longer Audax and Ultra rides, especially when road surfaces are not so good. Finally, I am 100% using the 35 mm tyres in the Tour of Flanders Sportive in April 😉

My experience is that you do not bonk with it because it drives your fat metabolism such that it works with very low blood sugar and fat metabolism is about the only thing you can run on. Blood sugar itself seems to be not going down to bonk levels. My actual feeling is that your Zone1 and Zone2 performance is actually increasing. The rest is the very same: all intensity feels shit. But I have that with normal weight loss as well, however there it stronger (until blood sugar is so low that I spectacularly bonk ...). I started with 135 kg and close to 300 Watts/60 min (I know it's sick but I love cycling though I had +130kg). Now I do not care about Watts duriong loosing weight ,I try just to go down to my target weight of 90 kg without loosing too much muscle mass. Which means strength and restistancy training, squats and stuff and eating as much proteins as possible. I am down. to 115 kg at the moment and lost only 1.5 kg of muscle mass. I do it since October '24 and have the exact same eating problem Daniel describes. Oh and I don't take Ozempic but some micro dosage of Zepbound (3.0 mg per week).
