I have literally purchased my first ever table saw, and a Cricut just because of this video. I've started getting into LEDs and your channel has been a MASSIVE inspiration. Thank you for all you do! I had an idea of slightly reducing the depth in the rear (so moving the LEDs closer) but then have room for the controller to sit directly behind the frame. A female DC port can be added facing downwards so that you can use a normal DC outlet (in my case, preferably a USB-to-DC cable) and then power can be run either within the wall (not recommended) or at least you can get by with a standard USB wall outlet (provided it supplies up to 3A). This would mean you'd need a controller for each individual box but through WLED it can all be controlled through a single app anyways. Just my idea for what I hope to do once the last of my Alibaba packages arrive :) Another downside though would be the power limitation. As each pixel needs ~60mAh, and this is ~70leds it appears, it would need 4.2A to work at full 100% white. Because the USB-to-DC cable can only output 2A, brightness would be limited to 40-50%. In the dark I don't believe this would be a major issue as I tend to run all of my LEDs at 30-50% brightness anyways.

Thanks so much and i love hearing stuff like this! Its a fun little hobby for sure. I love your ideas! Sounds like yours will have a much more finished look than mine. Each one having their own controller is no big deal at all as long as you dont mind the extra cost of the controllers. I'm the same way. ive never had the need to run the leds very bright but if I actually had them on during the day maybe I would want the extra power? But like you said, nothing is as convient as the standard usb wall plug. Thanks so much for sharing and let me know how everything turns out!

It would be interesting to only sand one side. I have been told you sand only the back side and leave the front side clear. The edge light refracts off of the back frosted panel and you supposedly get the exact same effect/look with exception it's much easier to clean the clear, non-frosted front. Also, I've been told always flame polish the edge whereby the edge lights shine through which will create a much brighter and better illumination. Thanks for your vids. They're really great.

Please create a spinning POV Lamp using LEDS. Ideally, you would create a high resolution multi-leg spinning light that translated rotational speed to refresh rate and converting standard 1080p resolution video to polar coordinates to drive the LEDs. It shouldn't be too difficult. Please create a tutorial for it. Love your content, thanks.

First of all, these look sweet! Thanks for sharing! Do you prefer this design or do you like the frosted acrylic with underglow more? Thinking about making one or the other, but since the frosted takes less LEDs, it would leave more for another project. Are there any major disadvantages compared to what you showed in this video? Is it way dimmer or anything?

Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I would say these get a little brighter than the edge lit design. However the edge lit design is not as bulky as this one. So there are positive and negatives to each lol. I know that doesn't help! But i think I personally like this design better since i can swap out the images.
@capncack

@@ChrisMaherDIY I ended up getting the material for these back lit ones, but if I did edge lit, I was planning to use the vinyl on stencil sheet like you did here to keep it swappable. Btw your WLED videos were super helpful on my last project which led me to this one.

Chris! Love this project. I’m planning a build of my own and a question. Where are you hiding the project box? I’m thinking that I’d like to keep the external guts to a minimum. Ideally, power cord only. I bought the project box you recommended and would like to stash it inside the frame but it’s going to be a little big and may block some lights. I considered affixing it to the back cover, but wanted your thoughts. Perhaps a way smaller box that could hold the esp8266 module? I’m excited to share my results. Just waiting for my new table saw to arrive! Thanks always! Doug

Thanks so much and I still think this was my favorite project I've done! Quick question, what are you referring to when you say project box? If your only doing 1 box you would not need the big power supply that I used. But I will generally have the power box and the controller near the wall plug and then run the small wires from the controller to the led strip. Those wires can easily be hidden with any cord management stuff you find on Amazon. I will then just usually hide the power supply that's near the wall outlet with either furniture, a plant, electric fireplace, speakers etc. Anything to get it out of sight. Hope that helps!
@Roadrunnerwoodworks
@Roadrunnerwoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY Thank you. I was referring to the black plastic box you use to house the controller board. If I find a smaller one, I could stick it to the inside wall of the back cover. Does that make sense?

@@Roadrunnerwoodworks ahh gotcha! Yeah honestly I think you could for sure do it inside if you found a small one. I also don't think you would notice any interference with the light being potentially blocked a little bit either! I'm excited to see how it all turns out!

Hi Chris! I was just wondering why you are supplying the last Lightbox with another + and - ?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great question! If you only supply the beginning part of the led strip with power, as the strip goes on, you begin to lose power and the lights will start to look different since they are not getting enough juice. Adding the extra + and - at the end is just providing extra power so that all the lights will have enough. Hope that makes sense! Great question!

Thats a great idea! That was initially what I was planning on doing but even though it does look cool and would work for certain images, you lose some of the crisp/sharpness to the designs when behind vs in front which is why I ended up just doing it in the front. Very creative keep it up now I have a good question is there a possibility that you might be interested in selling this I would be interested in buying them or two what ever you are willing to do

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! Yeah getting the tools is certainly a slow process and you also have to have the space for it. Maybe someday down the road if I lose my day job I'll look to try making them to sell but for now its just a fun little hobby. Thanks though for asking! That means a lot!

I don’t think you need to convert png files to svg. If you import the file to Cricut design space it will convert it automatically. Either that or it reads png files. I’ve uploaded both png and svg files to my cricut. I have been using these machines since back when they only had cartridges and were mainly used for paper. I love this idea. So simple yet so cool.

@@ChrisMaherDIY thank you! I am thinking of making tiles for a wall, so to make them as thin and light as possible I am wondering if I can attach led tape to the side of the acrylic with, perhaps, white background paper. Do you think it would look good?

Can you take sanding acrylic instead of white acrylic?
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great question! You for sure can sand instead of the white acrylic. It should still have a similar effect as long as you give it a good sanding. But I would probably sand a little bit, test it out, see how it looks and sand some more and keep repeating until it looks how you want it to.

Do you have any knowledge about pixel matrixes etc.? I really want to make a led screen/pixel matrix displaying a cherryblossom tree with falling petals from LEDs...

@@ChrisMaherDIY I actually found a kickstarter concept that matches the idea I was looking for. It is called divoom pixoo 64x64, it was only 100 bucks so saves me time. I still need to finish my wall light and infinity cube anyway haha. I might try making a led cube built from matrixes after though. It looks very complicated but the effect is so mesmerizing to look at, very beautiful.

@@ChrisMaherDIY I will do that!:) The led cube I want to make is 64x64x64 dimensions, very big lol. The guy who made the tutorial/process video about this cube (Malt Whiskey), also happens to be Dutch like me. He has been answering some of my questions as to what kind of tools you really need and an estimate of what the cost of making one will be. Never thought I would actually consider making something like that since I have no educational background for this lol. Learnt everything from watching yt videos, like yours for example. So keep up the good work and I will watch your newly uploaded vid now :)

If you could, what was the cost of supplies (not including the printer) and how much time per box? It's really incredible how far you can go with these.
@ChrisMaherDIY
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great question! Man that's always a tough question. The wood is pretty cheap. Maybe 7 dollars. Acrylic is about 10. lights for 1 entire strip of 16 feet is like 35 dollars but you don't use nearly that amount for one box. The esp device is like 7 dollars. Power block/cable anywhere from 10 to 30 dollars. But then you have the supplies for the vinyl. If you are literally buying everything to make 1 box, its very expensive lol.

I have always wondered though how so many people are able to sell licensed content / products on Etsy.
