Hello sounds like the gear box mounts are shot that will be the clunking noise . Thats an engine out job.Also i would put some pipes on the fan housing before your engine get too hot or block the holes off above the exhaust in the tin ware.👍 great video and good luck on the build

Yeah! And don't forget to remove those tiny plastic plugs on top of each Door Hinge, then add a couple of drops of Gear Oil EP 90. Nothing worse than rust stains and rusty and worn hinges.

I have had two VW Beetles. Both were the 36 horsepower variety. They were basically German Model A's.

I just bought my third beetle. 1972 looks just like yours. I'm doing a semi restore right now. I'm in the Houston area too. Your videos are very informative. I enjoy watching them.I've learned a lot about my beetle. The other 2. That I bought were already restored. I bought mine for 250 dollars 👍

Get a copy of Turbomania by Bob Tomlinson. It was written in the 90's and is air-cooled vw specific. Shows the do's & don'ts , draw-thru and blow- thru type systems. Off the top, I would suggest all forged engines components & heavy duty remote oil cooling system. Don't over cam a turbo engine . Gearbox will need some upgrades to survive 5x's the power it was designed for.

I currently have two a 1973 super beetle and 74 standard beetle grandpa loved them and after his death last year I wanted to experience them as a way to connect with somebody who was my mentor in mechanics

I have 6 beetles and 2 classic vans. I bought a beetle for 300$ in 1997 because the fuel filter was installed backwards. Someone cut the roof off but it otherwise has no rust. Sits in my garage. Several of them are yard ornaments. I have had two 1971 vans stolen in my days. One was a camper pop top and was returned to me in crash totalled condition. I have gone to court to get back a 1978 van that a mechanic was supposed to fix as I tore my house down after a tornado crushed the house and I had to relocate. I won't part with any of them due to the history of nightmares I have faced simply owning them. I had some kind of bullseye painted on me for years and people constantly hit my vans and bugs. I drive a 1969 Yukon yellow bug. Her name is CAR - Cover of Abbey Road. Same year and color on the Beatles album. My 1969 van is a hang out sitting area and isn't taken out because of the bullseye factor I am cursed with. The 78 van has a camper top added by the previous owner. It is used to camp out in the back yard. Bug Garden wouldn't be home without all the VW's on the acreage. They make it the name that it is. Your videos are indeed genuine and appreciated. It's like going back in time to the late 80s and forward for me. I put a whole new brake system in CAR this month. Otherwise, hadn't worked on a VW for 11 years. Tons of YT videos of bugs lately. Maybe I am meant to do some restoring. Thank you for your content.

If you put some pop out rear windows in the Beetle, it will help keep the interior cooler.

Nice EMPI style wheels; I see you put in the rear tin on the engine compartment. It helps with cooling if you put a couple of baby food jar lids on the two heater hose outlets on the fan housing when not using heater boxes and the connecting hoses. Also helps to cover the heater hose holes on the rear engine tin; that way hot air expelled from the engine is not recirculated into the engine compartment; you only want fresh air up there. The source of the clunk can be loose or broken transmission mounts (the front nosecone or the two rear ones).

I just bought 71 s and the previous owners had also put the battery in backwards! Still ran, but blinkers didn’t work.

Like another viewer posted get those heater hoses on or block them off with caps on the fan housing. Air, like water, takes the easiest path and it's much easier to just blow out through those heater outlets instead of cooling your engine. The sneaky part about this is that it's not immediately obvious that any damage is being done but it really wears the engine down especially in someplace hot.

I also purchased a 1972 VW Beetle Sedan December 16, 2023 as well. I had never looked or considered but saw it and wanted it. I am located close in Cypress Texas.

@@chriscraft77022 I just was at Home Depot on Eastex freeway picking up an A/C for the warehouse when I tinker with it. That church is off 610 heading that way. Have a narrowed beam and chrome Fuchs for it and a lot of little details.

In Australia that colour was known as Dulon/Dulux "Flipper Blue". But Dulon "Honey Brown" was the most popular colour for the 1300 beetles and Superbugs.

In vw be careful when u say that it has been “maintained” shiny parts doesnt mean cared for, maybe attempted but from all the other problems, and the battery being backwards? Lmao the battery seems like a rookie mistake and definitely a red flag to all the other work done

I have a 64 C10 . I watched your video on the Externally regulated alternator. I did the change, charging well but original dash gauge is pegged at bottom. Wish you had a paid 800 number for tips, not 900# 😂. Love the videos, thank you.

@@chriscraft77022 it’s the original, it just reads D and C. The battery is charging nicely on my tester. I’m not a mechanic. Just following videos to keep my truck going. Thank you for the reply. I appreciate your time.

You have to find what lead of the ammeter you disconnected if that is what happed. the ammeter will also read different with the internally regulated. it should still show it above 0 ( charging)

@@chriscraft77022 ok , all I did was the exact horseshoe loop on the external regulator harness with the two wire connecting the far outsides and the two middles.

.on your noise in the back, change the swing arm bushings and the trailing arm bushings.

Also, check the front carrier bolts on the transmission. I had a 1967 that the casting broke, and I ended up having to buy a complete transmission from a junkyard.

71 t0 73 was 1302s and 1303s superbug with strut front suspension and IRS rear suspension with the twin port 1600 cc engine , The strut front suspension bugs have the bigger rounded under bonnet and front guards . The 68 was the first with the the European style square bumper which is what your car looks like except for the rear window vents , the 68 did not have those .The 1303s had the curved windscreen and padded dash , only the USA had the hydraulic front bumper due to 30 mph front bumper laws . After the 1303s VW was already phasing the beetle out to be replaced with the Golf , so I think they basically they just down graded the specs of the bug . Was this a German built bug ?

Way back in 1971 my first car was a second hand 68 1500cc here in Australia , then 2 years later I bought a 71 1600cc twin port from my brother in law that he bought new , the difference in performance and handling was very apparent , I still have it and its been sitting my garage for the last 15 years , my retirement project . And yes the Golf came out in 74 and the entire beetle production shifted to South America . Happy motoring

My grandparents got one at an auction last summer. Most of the things on the outside look fine but I gotta clean up the inside. Get my permit pretty soon and I’m glad I get to learn the on a manual.
