I had a 1966 Chevy 2 (Nova) station wagon back in the late 1980's it had a bad voltage regulator and putting the new one in and "balancing" the strength of the magnetic field in the ( external regulator ) was a pain in the ass. I said to myself: there's got to be a WAY to put the more modern version of A/C Delco, internally regulated alternator on an pre 1973 Chevy ( or other G.M. vehicle ) I was thinking about it again tonight 3 am, Saturday August 14th, 2021 and looked it up on KZbin. It's so simple ! A MILLION thanks to you for this great, great video. I don't understand why ANYONE would give this a thumbs down. - Jim in Buffalo, Ny

The guy's REALLY good with important details. 4:50 He mentions that the threads on the STUD that sticks out of the alternator MIGHT be METRIC on the new alternator because these internally regulated alternator's were typically found or made for cars in the mid 1970's and later and G.M. and other auto makers were "farming out" or "outsourcing" the manufacture of parts to places like Canada and Mexico that - you guessed it - use the METRIC system. If you lose the nut for that stud and figure "oh, well, I have another one on the OLD alternator that I can use..." watch out ! If it's NOT the same thread style as the new alternator you WILL strip the hell out of the stud or snap it off. In either case you're F... screwed and WILL have to not only take out the new alternator that you JUST installed BUT you will have to disassemble the alternator to replace the stud. Take your time for crissakes. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of CURE. Slow and steady wins the race. P.S. as he mentions: don't OVERTIGHTEN that small nut you WILL snap off the stud. I've done it. I've stripped them AND I've broken them off ( no, not on the same job ) have you ever seen a 275 lb mechanic cry. ? It's not pretty.

4:20 When you pry back the "keeper" tabs on the female brass terminal connector you MUST be very careful to NOT be too ROUGH or HEAVY handed with them. Don't pry them back VERY far either they WILL snap off. These are the keeper tabs that the video instructor mentioned 3:31 about halfway through the video that you push down on to cause them to "disengage" on the inside of the original alternator's ( white ) plastic connection plug. SO BEFORE you insert each wire into the plastic connection plug for the NEWER style, internally regulated alternator - you HAVE TO pry the "keeper" tab, of each wire, back outward so that when you insert the wire into the new plastic connection plug it will be "kept" in place. You'll feel it "click" when you've pushed it in far enough. That will indicate that it's inserted far enough and will stay inserted. You can gently pull back on each wire after you've inserted them to TEST whether or not the keeper tab had indeed "grabbed onto" it's companion mounting surface inside the plastic connection plug.

Time to.upgrade my 66 GMC. It still has the original external regulator and the massive 35A original alternator. They work, but 35A just isn't enough to support my mods (electric fan, halogen headlights, stereo, HEI etc). It's been running the fan right off the battery pretty well, but at night with headlights and wipers on, the voltmeter in the cab showing 10V barely. It's not that low at the battery I'm sure, that's just the drop through the harness, but it probably is an overall discharge with that much load on the old alternator. Amazing that it's held up so long.

The beauty of GM alternators is that they're all the same size dimensionally through the 70s and 80s, except for diesels. The easiest way to pick one, is to get one from a truck. 1979 would be a good year. If you have rear defrost or power windows, get a high amp option. If you have no electrical options, a mere 36 amp alternator will be fine.
@dansclassicsandcustoms4 жыл бұрын
You'd want a 63 amp or lower from an early 80's squarebody/g body etc.. The optional 80 amp truck alternator is NOT the same dimensions, it requires a different bracket

Im trying to get this conversion to work on my '87 Prelude, so I can throw in a 90amp Bosch. There is 6 wires off the regulator plug tho. And only 5 are documented. 2 wires input off the alternator. *2* go to charge indicator. 1 goes back to battery. 6th one goes... god knows where

Positive. Honda had their own bizzaro-world way of doing... everything... until the late 80s. And that includes external Voltage Regulators. Because reasons. :-/ If I could add photos to these comments I could show you

Did you figure it out?

So i hooked it up like you said but its not working... the number 2 spot had a larger red wire on the alt before now its the white wire... just wondering if the alt bigger number 2 wire is supposed to go to the battery same spot as the battery main wire on the back?
@chriscraft770224 жыл бұрын
yes it does

@@chriscraft77022 so dont hook up the white wire to anything and hook the red wire to the same spot the large wire on the back goes?

no.. watch my gm 3 wire alternator video

@@chriscraft77022 i watched them both... have number two back to battery post on back of alt and number one 12 volts with key on... still not getting charge. Im thinking the alt is bad
@chriscraft770224 жыл бұрын
@@luckylindy1964 sounds like it is BAD ... and are you 100% sure that's an internally regulated alternator you are testing?

So. I have original 1966 wiring for a external regulator. Alt on left side of engine. Crate engine alt is on right side of engine. New alt is a one wire. Is this the same process to eliminate the external regulator?

@chriscraft77022 . Looks like I might have figured it out, but my voltage to the battery while charging is.a.little over 1 volt lower through original wiring vs direct connection to battery.

How would you do this on a 64 impala where there’s only two wires off the plug that goes into the alternator

@chriscraft770224 жыл бұрын
it will 100% ... just study the wiring and look at what is being connected
