Just an after thought. As a kid I loved Saturday mornings because all my favorite shows were on. Some things don't change.

I just did the upgrade on my 64 Impala. Only thing that happens if you mix up the two wires on the back like I did is it’ll cause a parasitic draw (3 amps) lol

A good lesson learned there, that configuration would leave the alternator “on”. Good point to bring up.

motivated is the word!! Its hard to keep motivated if you dont have buddies into it. (we are all getting older and its a lot of work just bending over some days!) Great channel and yes the bird is the word! I have a pump gas 600 hp "Free Range- hormone free- cage free Bird" since 1968--(NHRA doesnt like it at all when it runs low 11's @122mph- but hell who wants to climb over a cage into a restored car!!😉)...GREAT CHANNEL" I call it the "Red Green show" of the BIRD world for sure!!" keep it up!

Lol you just made my day. I love the red green show! Awesome car too, 600 hp is plenty fun for sure. I am on the same page i understand the benefit and why a roll cage is good but i just don’t like the looks of them or climbing over it. Thanks for keeping your bird alive!

Great video brother I did the same wiring to my 67 and put a hidden dummy light which is a charging light just to let me know if my battery is charging even though I have a gen gauge just to be on the safe side 👍

you have proved its a relatively simple upgrade. the light is a nice touch too.

Great video I was trying to wire my 69 firebird same way but I don't know what you did with the two wires in middle of voltage regulator plug blk/red and blk/wht.. thanks again
@VinylVillageGarage

They are no longer needed of the 4 wires two operate the alternator fields the other 2 one is battery voltage and the other operates the “GEN” light in the dash. Whatever ones you aren’t using can be removed.

So those extra wires, can they be hooked up to a set of guage clusters? Y the way I thought I subscribed. I watch a lot of your videos, I also have a 69. I want to hook up my electric fan but haven’t yet, also I have an electric kick down on my turbo 400 and need to hook that up. My positive cable routes down threw a metal tube on the DS behind the engine but was wondering on the location of the rest of the routing? I’ve asked this question on a FB group and I see it is also routed across the cross member

Can you please share a part number for that alternator? I am looking to do the same thing with our 1967 Firebird with a 326. Thank you

There is multiple part numbers. How to find one look up on rockauto or any part website really a replacement Alternator for a 1975 Firebird with a 400 engine. Then pick 63 amp or 80 Amp option. You should be go to go.

Crazy how one year later everything he's talking about could run on Bluetooth and battery powered heat resistant completely wireless. As an inventor I say we destroy artificial intelligence

Did I miss something you never hooked a wire to the lug on the back of the alternator. Is one not needed
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage 5 ай бұрын
It used just two wires one from the battery on large lug and other is ignition on off.

I'm not sure how it is with the Pontiac line but on my 68 Chevy II Nova, it has the original external regulator and basic 37A alternator and from what I've found out mine only had one underhood wiring harness that contains the same 10 gauge wire from the alternator to the battery and horn relay (as well as a leg to the external regulator) and this same gauge wiring was used if the car had the standard 37A alternator or up to the highest optional one being a 63A model. Technically I can bolt in and use existing wiring to put in a 63A model to replace my 37A BUT if my electrical demands are more than 63A and I need to install let's say a 150A model that I might only need 120A out of it, then I MUST upgrade my wiring between the alternator post and the battery positive post if that is where I am drawing this added power from for fans or whatever. This is due to that GM only designed or sized the 10 gauge to work at most with a 63A alternator and related draw. If a new wire is added, then the proper protection should be used to protect the wire should it become shorted. I do like your video and maybe too think about clocking the back case of the alternator to get the output post further away from the valve cover and then have it easier to access that nut on the stud. thanks for the insight, you are correct you can clock the alternator in any of the four positions, wish I added it in the video for everyone to hear, I will have to get that the next time around. I agree a larger wire would be a nice upgrade too especially if I needed over 80 amps. I appreciate you taking the time to share.

@@VinylVillageGarage Hi just bought a 67 LeMans with a one wire conversion, I notice the regulator was still hooked up? Also when it sat over night the battery was drained, so I ran a volt meter from the negative post to the cable and was drawing 12 volts? So tested the ground on the alternator and it wasn't grounded. So I grounded it and disconnected the regulator, does any of theses wires need to be joined? Thanks, Pat in AZ....
