Hey Chris. I must admit all your videos have helped me out so much. I've always wanted to get into Server related activities and your videos are by far some of the best. They are short, go into the right amount of detail and also watching you do it means I can join in too. :) Thanks for all your effort.

Excellent video, I could never quite figure out exactly what DFS did before watching this, as usually we have our server guys take care of that and just give us the populated namespace.

Thanks, Chris. Super helpful video. It really helped to demystify the setup without bogging down in the minutiae of facts that had me put this on the shelf for too long. I set up 3 VM DCS in my lab this morning using Linked Clones (via your other very helpful tutorials :)). It is so cool to be able to watch replication happen by having my 3 DFS folders side by side and transferring or deleting a bunch of big files. Thanks again!

Very nifty! I am tasked with setting up the DFS for a Lync on-prem project (which requires more and more servers the more we discover... ever hear of a witness server? LOL) and this video helped a lot in understanding how it functions and how to set it up. Thank you!

@MrSoundshark Very good point about running freenas instead of server 2008. Freenas is nice for certain scenarios, but my opinion (for my environment), I prefer Windows Server 2008 r2 instead. Another note, the R2 release requires 64bit (correct me if I'm wrong, but P4's were 32bit). Again you could still just run the non R2 32bit version. Thanks for the comments as always too!

Thanks... glad I was able to help ya get a better idea of what DFS is. Some Sys Admins don't like to share info for some reason. I think Sys Admins should share as much info as possible.

Hey there... sorry for the delay. Just noticed I had some comments I didn't respond to. When DFS detects a conflict, it uses the version of the file that was saved last. Moves the other file into the DfsrPrivate\ConflictandDeleted folder. Remains there until Conflict and Deleted folder cleanup... more to it, but bottom line I would say is: it uses the last saved version.

Hi Chris, Great video - as are all the others in the series. Thanks for sharing them with us. With a DC (2008R2) and two Member Servers (Win7s) at my disposal I tried setting up the Replication group with the 2 Win 7 systems but alas no joy. I received an error basically stating that the following targets cannot be added as they are running client OSes. Is it the case that you can't set this up with Member servers. I'm a bonafide rookie when it comes to DFS. Regards JS

Hi Chris, Just been watching the video (thought it was great by the way) and wondered, does it copy across all the file permissions? I have an old server that I want to decomission and am thinking of using DFS Replication to move it to another server. What happens when I remove the old (master) server? do all the files remain in the secondary location? Cheers Richard The Geek

excellent. One question on replication (sync). if \\fs1\A has two files and same folder on \\fs2\A has 0 file ( not replicated yet). If the replication is set \\fs2\A -->\\fs1\A , what will happen 1. would it remove file from \\fs01\A ( which has 2 file) 2. or whatever source or target in sync setup, both file server \\fs01\A & \\fs02\A will have 2 files after replication/sync please explain

also, is there any benefit in having the namespace server setup on the remote DC or should it be on the DC at the main office?

Hi Chris, Assuming DFS is setup as per your video, what is the behavior if a users opens a file from the host server and makes changes while another user has the same file open via the DFS namespace share at the remote site? cheers,

Hi Chris, I'd like to use DFS to sync files between two server in our accounting office with a remote DR center we have. if a user was to open an existing excel file, make a change and save would I have to wait for replication to happen to see that file updated on the other size. is DFS a good tool for what i'm trying to do or would you suggest another like ViceVersa or DoubleTake

Hey I have a question.. When you are controlling more than 1 servers on your computer.. Does that mean that there are more than 1 physical servers??? For every server your working on, is there a different physical computer? Sorry if that's a dumb question I'm new to this..

I must point out the problems you might get into when you use DFS combined with replication in a prouction environment. It is important to make sure you have a proper backup in place before you start working with DFS. I have seen problems with DFS quite a bit, especialy with replication between 2 sites where people are working on the same data in 2 different locations. DFS is great but you need to understand how it properly works.
