Maybe you should invest in a stethoscope to help isolate various sounds coming from your engine. My dad taught me to use a wood dowel and hold one end next to my ear and the other end against various parts of the engine to locate problems while the engine was running. This is how we located the strange sound coming from me 49 Chevy convertible after we replaced the engine with a rebuilt shot block. Believe it or not, it was the push rods rubbing against an old line to the valve train. An easy fix but without using the wooden dowel we would have torn the whole thing apart to find it.

this comment is about a year late, but I am glad you found an alternator that worked. It used to be very difficult to find a part the C5 computer understood , that was why the original French part is so expensive. A typical replacement part would work only until it threw a voltage the computer didn't understand , then you got sent directly were back to go. One of the reasons a lot of guys bought a model specific rebuild kit and rebuilt the part rather than try to find a working replacement. Your cars appetite for batteries might be a short, or related to someone in the past installing a part that the fitment books at the parts store says works, but really doesn't in application.

I replaced my oem alternator in december with that oreilly's alternator. Lemme just tell you about my experience... Cold starts cause error code charge system fault when cold started in cold weather. I live in missouri and get that message nearly every morning on around or below freezing temps. Now that it is spring i'm not getting it anywhere near as often though. I heard from the forums this was caused by some electronics that are in the oem alternator but not in these oreilly's alternators for whatever reason. Voltage regulator I think they said? I'm not too sure. Second thing, I just had to get it replaced 2 days ago. The one I bought in december started making a horrible noise (not belt chirp/slip, it was some sort of internal failure) in mid february. So after about 2 months of use it had issues basically. They did warranty it for me but honestly they kind of tried to get me to not to and tried to blame it on my belt tension. Anyways, here's to hoping our new alternators last long!

It looks like its coming out of the weep hole on the bottom of the water pump. Its on the housing of the shaft, on the underside. Also, do you have a keyless entry alarm with a passive system on it. Those will drain your battery if its not a daily driver, since they are always scanning for the FOB.

Similar story here with alternator - only my 2001 is an A4 with the decoupler pulley. I have had nothing but Hell trying to find a compatible/reliable alternator for the past 12 years. Have purchased 6 in all from $125 rebuilt to $700 high performance - only a couple were compatible with the PCM. Last summer I caved to the suggestions on a Corvette Forum insisting that my best bet was to find a local shop to rebuild my original Valeo. Old guy, over 40 years experience, two day turnaround. Multiple phone calls over 4 months! Finally went down to pick it up and he handed me a box full of parts (about half my alternator) and simply said "it was burnt up". Currently running a new AC.Delco with occasional Charge System Fault.

Hey Chris. I had a similar mind numbing troubleshooting issue with my belts chirping on my C5 FRC in 2019. The problem began within a few weeks of replacing a bad water pump with a Autozone Duralast water pump. I replaced the belt, the pulley, the tensioner, checked the alternator no squeaks there. After months of trying and failing to figure out what was causing the chirping I discovered a tiny amount of water was leaking down from the where the main hose connected to the water pump. I cleaned up the belts to eliminate the coolant and the chirping stopped! So I figured ok it’s the leak for sure... but ofc since it was still leaking the squeak would come back pretty quick. I replaced the hose thinking since the pump was only a few months old at this point that the pump had to be fine... replaced all the hoses intact with a nice silicone set while I was at it..... continued to leak from the same spot. A couple days later the real culprit revealed itself. The actual hose spout that the hose slides over was not properly pressed into the pump and had become lose allowing a tiny amount of water to seep out of the spout seam. Found this out the hard way, driving the car on the interstate the spout ejected itself from the pump and dumped all coolant out of the car basically instantly. Thankfully I reacted quickly got off the road, and shut it down with no permanent damage. Replaced the pump with an AC Delco on Amazon, the leak, the chirp both gone ever since. Nearly 2 years now.

Have you tried using a mechanics stethoscope to diagnose the squealing noise coming from that c-5 ? I rebuilt alternators for (coincidentally) 40 years professionally. That squeak you heard is inconsequential; it's just the sound of the used (but not necessarily worn out) brushes riding on the slip rings. If you had spun the old alternator up in the vice with a gun you would have not heard this noise. Almost any used alternator will make this sound when spun by hand and is not a warning of impending doom.

It’s definitely your water pump. I had a similar issue happen with my C4. Also, I think the reason you’ve gone through so many batteries is because you live in Arizona. Heat is bad on car batteries. I live in Texas and they don’t last long here either. Maintenance free batteries are really low quality now. They all leak, even when they’re new.

It's hard to find good info on battery issues with Corvettes because you'll get all the "Corvettes kill batteries" tropes. I see you park it on a battery maintainer so presuming it's working correctly my guess is the alternator. I think the voltage regulator is in the alternator so once replaced so once replaced you'll know the alternator and voltage regulator should be good. A maintainer is good because it keep the battery charged, but it can paper over a problem with the charging system or a parasitic loss. Try connecting a multimeter to see if you're getting 13.8-14.4 volts at idle. Also try connecting a multimeter between the negative battery terminal and negative battery cable and the car to see how much current is drawn when the car is off. If you're not familiar with testing current, use the 10A shunt on the meter. Once connected it will take a few minutes for the car to turn off. My 2005 draws about 4 A for lime 5 mins, then goes down to around 1.5 A and then finally after about 15-20 minutes (seems crazy long but apparently that's normal) it goes down to 60 mA. The forums say it should be closer to 30 A but I've parked the car for over 3 weeks not on the maintainer and it was fine. How hot does your garage get in the summer? Heat kills batteries so you could be replacing it every 2-3 years.

@@1wtrahan Sounds like you have a great car and that's good the battery disconnect has been worked well for you. A disconnect also doesn't do anything to reduce battery sulfation or discharge from sitting. After about 3 month of sitting even disconnected a lead acid battery will be discharged, so if it does have enough charge to start the car, that's a heavier load on the alternator which it isn't designed to do, and a harder charge on the battery which can reduce its life.

Please take a look at some youtube vids about "planned obsolescence", and you'll come to realize why those re-man parts like water pumps and alternators generally only last one or two years. All they have to do with the water pump is allow the bearings to be exposed to the coolant, which is easy for them to do. With alternators it is generally the internal voltage regulators that start getting flakey or failing. The regulators used to be a separate device that could be replaced for $15 and mounted in a cool protected place that wouldn't cool and vibrate the regulator circuit to death. They changed this design decades ago to put regulators inside the alternator. With your battery problem I would suspect the known grounding issue that all C5's have. With bad connections at body grounds, something called grounding loops will form, which can seem to randomly energize some circuits in the car, tripping relays and such, which increases the draw on the battery just sitting there parked. There are a few ways to deal with this issue, and I know buying new batteries gets old quickly. First is to simply install an on-board battery charger and plug in when the car is parked. You want a 1.5 or 2.0 amp maintainer, such as Schumacher brand that will not discharge the battery when not plugged in. Second option is to install a physical battery cut-off switch like racecars have and disconnect when parked. A third option is to address the likely cause, and fix/replace all the grounds in the car with better stuff. It may be a pain to deal with buy maybe worth it if you love the C5, and a plus is it gives you more potential content for the channel.

Soap water sprayed on the belt will tell if it's the belt squeaking. A shot of wd40 into the pulley will tell if it's a bearing. There is a reason the original alternators are so expensive. Buy a cheap stethoscope it will save you weeks of diagnostic time. Cars are a very expensive appliance you either buy new ones or fix the one you have. That water leak will fry the ignition timing sensor below it........

Well it sounds like the Harmonic Water Balancer Pump for sure👍. I thought you were going to say the alternater guy was watching YOUR KZbin videos. If not, you should tell him to watch this one. Enjoyed the story. Most of us car guys/gals have been there.

How did you miss that leak before throwing new parts at her? If the balancer isn't wobbling with a squeak like that... the water pump should be the first place to check. A boroscope for $15 on Amazon is a really handy gadget for looking in places that are hard to locate. Every garage needs one.

You are in AZ? I’m in Fountain Hills. Do you have a FB account? Wanted to ask you a few things about your exhaust.

Yes. My full list of mods is in the video description.

With the headers/catted X, would it pass AZ emissions inspection? I don’t think a catback is gonna get the sound I want. Yours sounds perfect. Any drone at 1400 or so RPMs?
@mycorvettelife3 жыл бұрын
Yes, mine passed the one time I did it. Get Corsa, no drone. Also, if it’s not your daily, get collector car insurance and toy are exempt from emissions. That’s what I’ve done for the past 3 years.

I had a very similar squeal. I tried replacing the belt, tensioner, idler and then 2 days ago my water pump pulley completely snapped off and it threw the belt and caused a LOT of damage to just about everything under the hood

I don't understand the PRICE OF A REBUILT Alternator? All they do is put new bearings in and electronic module..

Since the car is of a certain age, it is probably best to change everything on the front of the engine. Check the power steering pump pulley. Some were made of plastic and detonate under load causing catastrophic engine failure. Turn One makes a great pulley for that application. Also change the harmonic balancer. The Summit C2501 is a great alternative to the ATI. It’s warranty is also 4 times longer (1 year versus 3 months). All the best.

You need to get yourself an automotive stethoscope.

I’ve often took about a 36” plastic tube and held one end to my ear and the other end I hold in front of the individual rotating parts, ie, water pump, alternator, to try to isolate the noise. Usually works.

some use a wooden dowel, or even a long screwdriver , to lessen the chance of flexible line getting caught in moving parts , but I use a very cheap automobile stethoscope from harbor freight , bought only because it was so cheap. I have used it once, just to try it out, before any repair situation.
