What does the inside of an engine with a Bad Head Gasket look like?

Ever wonder what the inside of your engine looks like? How about what a head gasket failure, an overheating motor, or a melted piston looks like? In this video I go deep inside an engine using a bore scope (endoscope) to look through the spark plug hole in my Chrysler PT Cruiser with a blown engine.
Stay tuned till the end because I show you the inside of a cylinder in my Chevy Corvette, Mercury Milan, and a Craftsman Lawnmower.
Here is a link to the bore scope: amzn.to/3884Bbt
The engine had a small head gasket leak and needed some coolant every month, but nothing serious. Then one day on the highway, it overheated and by the time the driver pulled off the road, the engine blew up.

You never seize to amaze me Chrisfix, was looking through headgasket vids and this one popped up. My Cobra had a headgasket leak and i used blue devil since i only drove the car local and to work and it stopped the smoke and never overheated. Im glad it didnt destroy my bottom end. My cars in the shop and i just had a 5 angle head job on the heads they were warped btw cause my block and heads are all aluminum, while the car was down and i saved money all that time i added a bunch of mods and rebuilt my t-45 transmission plus painted engine and calipers parts while the car was down. They should be putting it all back together next week finally :)

+ChrisFix why did you drive so long with the engine detonating? i have replaced many head gaskets from over heating and i have only ever seen 1 other that melted something, the sr20ve melted the alloy block between 2 and 3 cylinder that fat ass lady kept driving with the head gasket blown, the engine didnt blow a piston as they have oil squirters to cool the piston crown and rings what was your reason for continued driving on the blown head gasket? you can very very easily tell when ya head gasket is blown cylinder misfire, engine warming up random sounds/squeaks/rattles

+LittleGojira, head gasket sealer in a bottle does not work. Maybe short term, but long term it wont work and this will happen. I think the person who sold the car to me did this and after a few months the leak got worse until it gave way and the engine blew.

These sealers (quick fixes) were invented during world wars to get military equipment (such as tanks and other heavy machinery) to a safe place. These liquids are all SHORT-term fixes and should NEVER be used on your vehicle... Unless you need to sell it quick. I mean really quick =)

"it didnt work for me so it mustn't work for anyone" You are incorrect, Certain brands of stop leak do work and they work very well. Its effectiveness will be determined by how advanced the warping is, but it has worked for me on multiple occasions so dont go making shit up based on un informed anecdotal evidence. Only stop leak that actually works well is Rislone's Block seal head gasket fix. I Used it to temporarily keep my run around honda from overheating until i found time to change the gasket, but it worked so well i still havent done it yet.

Andy Plater Sometimes you cannot prevent a head gasket leak because it is a manufactures defect (like in this case many PT owners have the same problem so it is common). Wow I was surprised to see the cross hatching in the truck. Kudos on the care of that engine. New engine time for the PT Cruiser (shit car with shit engine). I wouldn't even bother with a rebuild on this engine. The scoring on the wall of cylinder 3 was awful. It may have taken off too much material from the wall to ever work right again. I would say just not worth a rebuild unless doing it for fun but you may end up needing a cylinder sleeve to get it back into spec. But who knows until its all the way down and you have done your measuring. Cool little camera and cool video. Thanks for sharing.

ChrisFix Yeah I would love to see it done. I know you'd never get a v8 in it without some really serious modification. But you may be able to get a v6 in there. ChrisFix If you're interested, I write a lot of articles about cars and one of my most exciting one was the results of water decarbonization. Or, I should say, it was the most excited I've gotten from the results before I wrote the article. I don't have a bore scope, but it made each of my cylinders appear to run at the same temperature. Prior to the water decarbonization I had on my metal intake (each intake tube is seperate and not touching) running about the same Celcius except cylinder no. 1 was several degrees higher. Afterwards they were all the same temp.! I took a good drive and came back and my laser pointed infrared thermometer still read them all the same! I could really feel the difference too. Cylinder 1 had a leaking injector and after a new set it was still running hotter so I tried this method. I have a lot more to say, but I'll share the article link if you'd like it before I sit hit and write the whole thing again, lol.

Nice article. I would not consider the torque app accurate at all. It is fun to play and it might give you am estimate but it is not something serious. Your 5hp even on a dyno means nothing because there is so many variables. The temperature readings are a neat way to go about it. Did you take the temperature right after spraying all the water or did you run the car for a day?

Magnus Atheos yes. the fact they they took it out of production proves that it was terrible too. family and friends never got them to go past 50k. engines go bad too fast and for what ever reason the axles break. neighbors went through 2 of them already on the past 4 years

As with almost any car, you will find some that are lemons, and some that are great. Luckily, my PT Cruiser is one of the great ones. 14 years, 96,000 miles and all I've ever had to do is normal maintenance (oil changes, tires and brakes). I think it's one of the coolest looking cars there is (not like the generic "all-the-same" junk available now).

The Victim Card They were sold here by Mercedes Dealers at the time and were bought by people who thought the C class at the time was way too interesting a ride.... Funny this car came from the company who also build the Crossfire which is essentially a SLK but a really cool Weekend cruiser.

Thanks for the video Chris it is really nice, I would like to see how the fuel spray pattern from the injectors looks like when the fuel is sucked up on an engine working, I guess you could slide the camera through the intake mani looking right above intake valves or in front the fuel injectors. thanks

Very informative video! I just bought a new car and it smokes a lot. Most E46 owners say it's due to the ccv being clogged up. So I checked with a bore scope, only carbon build up with blacked top of spark plugs.. compression test 185, 175, 175, 155, 162,5 and 162,5 psi so yeah a bit of. with 13% difference between 1st and 6th cylinder. Factory compression should be between 140-150... So cylinder 1, 2 and 3 might have more carbon build up due to being close to ccv inlet...? I wonder... I guess I'll have to use some injection cleaner in those cylinders... Thanks Chris! You've helped me a lot!!

I'm from Austria and I bought an old '76 Cadillac Seville and right now I am replacing all the worn out parts and pieces and your videos help me a lot to get the idea of how to do most of these things! As some Users wrote before, I really would like to know how the engine cleaner works too. Since my car is a '76 model I guess the engine could use this cleaner. To be honest, I'm a bit skeptical that this product really helps, but if it does what it should do, I'd definitely use it. Thanks alot for all your videos, they're really helpful :)
