I love the way you make these easy to understand, and very good filming and clarity. I'm not a mechanic do-it-yourselfer, yet I watch your videos regularly. Every one who owns a car should be aware of your video collection. No longer can the repair shops confuse me, scare me, overcharge or falsely diagnose expensive repairs that are so urgent " ...your steering wheel will fall off next time you're on the freeway" . I can converse with the mechanics intelligently and this prevents my being taken advantage of, and I am now able to tell who are the honest mechanics and which ones aren't, and I can see what it's supposed to cost and how much labor is involved in each job. It's important to keep in mind some of these pulleys are secured using a reverse thread bolt. Make sure before attempting this or you could have a big problem.

@@187th That sucks. Several good videos on here of people using a 90° angle drill attachment to drill the broken bolt and then successfully use an extractor to remove it. Also Project Farm has a good video on which extractors work best. Just be 100% sure that bolt is indeed reverse thread and didn't just break due to being stuck in there.

joel maldonado Yes, the washer that I put back on the tensioner pulley bolt is needed. It holds the pulley in against the bearing properly when you tighten it down.

Easy, cheap fix indeed but what I have found is that its just as easy to buy the bearings in bulk, 10 to a package in my case, and when I have one starting to make noise I pull that pulley off the auto and then using a vise and a few choice sockets push out the old bearing and replace it, installation is by reverse order of course. Total cost for this same repair as you just did was $1.29 for that bearing. I have many Ford trucks, autos and nicely enough they all use the same bearing in just about everything including the alternators front bearing. I only replace the bearings on steel pulleys, not the plastic ones which I throw away now. I Only mention this as are people enjoy doing their own repairs to save money. Nice video too. Thanks. I bought the bulk bearings through Amazon.

+Raul Perez, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason so I hope you see this. It sounds like the belt was way too tight. Maybe it is the wrong belt, did you compare the size of the new and old. The new belt should be pretty much the same size (maybe slightly larger because it isnt stretched out). The other thing is you could have routed it incorrectly. I would check those two things and let me know if you find anything.

If you have a simple welder, you might try tack welding a bolt head onto it. Then use a socket to take it off and replace the nut. That is simple (if you have a welder). Im guessing you cant get a drill in there and just drill the bolt out?

Good video. I went really cheap and just replaced the bearing. $7.99 at my local farm supply house. (Agri Supply) The idler pulley bearing on my honda cr-v is commonly used on riding mowers (6203).

If you wan't to save even more money, you can just press in a new bearing. Cost is around $5 for a new bearing.

The old pulley that ChrisFix replaces in the video is worn smooth, while the new one has a fresh black coating on it. If you only replace the bearing, would you have a problem with the pulley tread being worn like that?

Excellent quality Japan made bearing costs around $5. Do not get the cheap Chinese made for a buck and it will last you for only a year instead of 10 years. That bearing will turn a billion times....

This video came in in a clutch. I was on my way home when I heard a noise in my engine compartment and my car died. Well, I was on the road. So, I quickly went into the nearest car park to see what was going on. The idler pulley had shattered around the ball bearings, causing the serpentine belt to slip and get shredded. Fortunately, there was an O'Reilly across the street. I got the ruined pieces off and took them over and got a sales associate to identified the parts and get me replacements. It cost me $90 total for the new parts. But, when I take into consideration towing costs and paying a mechanic to repair it, I realize I just saved myself some $300-$400. The best part is this was my first time to work in any car around the serpentine belt area and I managed to successfully install the new parts. I only needed the video to figure out where the tension pulley was located and how to manipulate it.

great vid. u forgot to mention that u should disconnect the negative battery cable (on most cars where the negative is the ground cable. i think there r much older vehicles where the positive cable is the ground tho rare.) do this cuz sometimes the radiator fans can come on even tho the car is not running.

Thanks Chris Fix, good video. My tension er was backward to your fix, I had to put a 3/8" wratchet (without a socket) in to a square opening to pull on to loosen the belt. This was on my wife's 2004 Pontiac Montana, hope this tip can help somebody also. The pulley I bought was a complete unit (pulley-bolt-dust shield). Thank again keep up the good work Chris. I done that but did not work spray V belt did not work make the sound go worse also tried wd40 and a little bar of soap but that didn't help either if it's the tension bearing then i replace that if not i'll replacethe belt. anyway

If it made the noise worse when spraying the belt, you have a belt tension issue. That can be the belt is stretched or that the tensioner spring is worn out and needs replacing.

This video helped thank you. My 07 Ram 1500 had the same issue just a slight wobble in the pulley. Instead of replacing like I should've I just torqued it back to factory specs. I had to get going, it seem to silence the wobbling noise. Will probably need to be replaced down the road.

I just did this for my jeep today, the idler pulley started making a chirp/high whining noise, so I wasnt able to use a belt tension-er so I forced it on lol. my belt runs under the pulley so I used the pulley to push down while getting the bolt on and bam worked perfectly and easy. thanks for the vid!

I have a '96 Saturn Wagon SOHC, and I thought my problem was a power steering pump or maybe even the chain, until I saw this, I went out to the garage, poked the pully and it wobbled, the dealership told me (and the previous owners" "that is just a normal noise the 1.9 makes" Never trust the dealership. He checked it out and the following is the exact verbage on my estimate for repair "Remove & Replace-Drive Belt Remove & Replace Serpentine Belt Idler Pulley-Remove & Replace Serpentine Belt" - The cost is as follows: Labor-$154 & $210.85 parts for a total job cost of $364.92! What I just saw you do and the low cost of the pulley (I understand maybe varied cost depending on car) that estimate seems insane to me! I'm suppose to get it done Monday so if you can give me some insight on your thoughts I would appreciate it so much! Thanks, Susan :)

Each belt is around $15 each. The Idler pulley is around $50. Most garages charge 1 hr labor plus the actual time it takes to do the labor. An amateur can replace both belts and Idler pulley in an hour. My opinion the labor is close.. but the parts are WAY off. Parts total shouldn't cost more than $100. Call your nearest auto parts store and ask for an estimate on both belts and Idler pulley.

Chris, I did exactly what you said it went perfectly. I just wish I would have changed the tension pulley too because the noise is less but still there. LOL I didn't think that both could be bad at the same time but it makes perfect sense for a 2004 GM product. Man... I've learned soooooooo much about the many different and very unusual ways that a Venture will fail that I should advertise myself as an expert "Chevy Venture Diagnoser Man" and I would tell people what's really wrong with their POS Ventures. :) Thanks Chris I owe you...... I found that on a 2008 mustang it is to remove belt off the alternator and idler pulley remove idler pulley. Me and my aunt used a 24 in in length And 1/2 breaker bar with a 3/8 adapter to break it lose and watched multiple videos and developed confidence. If your scared to move the serpentine belt just practice putting it on and off or you might forget how to put the belt on just draw a diagram or take a picture or whatever helps or your owners manual usually has the belt diagram. Longer the breaker bar the easier it is to move the auto-tensioner. It should take 30 mins tops or more if you got the wrong part like I did. I had to bend the little metal pointy things on the washer to take off the washer then compress the metal pointy things on when the washer is on the bolt. I didnt follow torque spec but i used breaker bar to tighten it until i heard a click which i think it indicates it might break the bolt if torqued anymore. Then put belt under idler pulley, of course using breaker bar too do that then over the alternator. Put the engine filter assemblies back together and done and no squealing.
