What strikes me now, after its quite mediocre successor has arrived, is how much of the fundamentals Mercedes got right. Dynamic mounts, dual clutches, hot vee twin turbos, and carbon ceramic brakes, sure. But it also sits the engine super far behind the front axle line and runs a transaxle, keeping all the weight inside the wheelbase and balancing it across the car - things Mercedes-Benz was doing on grand prix cars as far back as the 30's. The gadgets work as enhancements for what is, at the core, a well-designed sports car. The new one lets the tech overwhelm the basic design attributes, and what results is a heavier, less playful, less versatile car. 8 years later, and as much of a hard on as you had when you wrote that comment (understandable lol), I think we all need to appreciate this car even more now.

Having owned a 911 which admittedly is a better drivers car and sticks to the road like superglue! But…… My 2015 amg gts is a fucking monster and makes you feel something that a 911 can’t replicate. It’s brutal and the looks especially with the facelift front grill it really is a handsome car! You will not see many of these on the road and prior to buying mine I only ever saw around 5 in my life! It’s definitely an amazing car and you can daily drive it unlike those fancy cars like Ferrari which are not built to be driven often as they are too fragile.
@PorscheSweden9 жыл бұрын
This is just what the world needs! Not these super expensive cars with large dimensions and a million horsepowers, and of course we need more of Chris Harris! I don't care if it's up there with the 911 because in my opinion only a 911 can beat another 911. The way a 911 makes you feel cannot be explained, the way it drives it all just comes together so well. The AMG GT-S is anyhow a great release from Mercedes, finally we get something in the right marketplace and not these 200,000£+ cars that you'll never come close to.
@Beer_Dad19759 жыл бұрын
Uh, it's 120,000 pounds just to start - and it's a Mercedes so by the time you have optioned it up it'll be pushing 150,000 pounds or more... I love it, but as a high middle income earner, it's way into dream territory for me - in a few years when it's depreciated it'll be more in my budget range - but it's a Mercedes, so in a few years it'll be falling apart and costing tens of thousands a year just to keep running properly.
@rousseau3279 жыл бұрын
Matthew Sharpe I've owned a 2003 E320 with about 265,000 miles when I sold it. The car was bought with 120,000 miles. Had its issues, but for a car in such a condition, it was quite trouble free. A 3-4 year old Mercedes with less than 30,000 miles shouldn't be a problem if you take the proper pre-purchase precautions.
@Cartel8939 жыл бұрын
Matthew Sharpe Falling apart? Yes told it my dad, his last Mercedes has driven 630.000 km without a single engine failure. Still same gearbox, same clutch. I've driven one up to 250k. So falling apart is absolutely nonsense.

I went from a 2009 997.1 911 Turbo to the AMG GTS. Both were altered by Renntech (doing 600hp now). The AMG is so much more fun due to the sounds it makes - V8 woohoo. Both are astonishing cars - can chew up highway like you wouldn't believe. The Porsche has 10x the traction (2WD vs AWD + rear engine) - which s good or bad depending on your point of view.

***** Good thing that BMW engines are all still make powerful, and most importantly, VERY NATURAL sounds, right Uzzy? :)
@EvoPower20109 жыл бұрын
***** At least the 4L sounds like a V8, M5s 4.4 just sounds like a 3 cylinder with a huge turbo lol F10s sound pathetic
@hitman591009 жыл бұрын
***** Of course a naturaly aspirated like the old amg v8 sounds better , but is the same problem with bmw(in fact is worse with Bmw). The old bmw NA sounds better than their new turbo charged engines as well. But the difference between Mercedes and Bmw, is mercedes can keep fabulous sounds in their turbocharged engines without piping synthesized sounds through the speakers like bmw.And the sound at the exhaust of the turbocharged bmw are not good. Mercedes keep very good exhaust note compare to Bmw. So when you said:"new amg engines sound like dogshit. old ones are better. " you should go compare the previous Bmw NA engines sound ,with the new turbocharged bmw and you will hear the enormous difference. Now do the same thing by comparing the Mercedes NA v8 with the new turbocharged v8 5.5 liter and hear the difference... As you will hear the difference is not so much worse than the difference with the old bmw compared with the new ones. And it's funny how often in your comments you said the bmw m5 f10 with rpi gtm exhaust sound fabulous ( I agree it sound good but not as nearly good at the older one if i play the same game like you) and you say the amg gt with it's 4.0 v8 sound shit but this 4.0 v8 is with stock exhaust , so go hear the bmw m5 f10 with stock exhaust and you will hear how it's sound awful! thousand times worse ! At least this new v8 4.0 sound ok with stock exhaust and we can not say the same thing for the bmw M5 f10. Even Chris say in this video than Mercedes are the first one who sucess to make good sound with turbocharged engines, and it's not what we hear from the journalists about the new turbocharged bmw like the bmw m5 and m3 (it's the contrary we hear).
@hitman591009 жыл бұрын
***** But you you criticize an engine with stock exhaust (this 4.0 v8 in this video have stock exhaust) so why you talking about an aftermarket exhaust like the rpi gtm when you criticize an engine with stock exhaust. To be fair instead of say "listen to a RPI GTM F10 M5 dumbshit" you should say "listen to a stock bmw m5 f10". And if we hear a stock Bmw m5 f10 , we laugh so hard because it sound like shit.

The "end of turbo lag" is the simple secret this car shares w/ the BMW: It's undersquare (83x92mm). Thus the low-down grunt to supply torque while the turbos spool up, you're not in your typical oversquare hummingbird having to wait for the high revs. BMW's undersquare S54B32 (in the M3s and the roadsters) held the world record for torque-per-litre production engines for years until Ferrari took it w/ the 458. Why you see crazy KZbin videos of M3s running insane 1/4 miles w/ bolt-on turbo kits.

Back in the days of the E39 and E46, BMW's were untouchable and the fact that rivals from both German and foreign rivals are now easily competing and even surpassing BMW in a lot of areas speaks volumes. BMW are far too busy pandering to the watered-down tastes of the Chinese these days but who can blame them, that market's huge! this car and 911 both have their cons and pros. this AMG has better weight distribution and hydraulic steering but 911 has AWD and rear seats. but i think for most people buying these cars image will be the deciding factor. in terms of image the 911 is iconic but also somewhat played out. this AMG is unique but also nobody knows what it is. i think it would be really hard to decide between the two. both are great cars and so is the Audi R8 the McLaren 570, the Cayman GT4, the Corvette the GT-R ... too many good cars out there !
@AntoniusTyas9 жыл бұрын
+g1981c About the AWD, it depends on which 911 you're talking about. I guess the AMG GT S would be closer to 911 Carrera GTS with RWD, performance-wise. Yes, AMG GT has more power but 911 GTS is lighter so it was kinda draw for both IMO
@g1981c9 жыл бұрын
+Antonius Tyaswidyono there is a 911 GT2 RS which is 4 liter turbo Rear WD with 620 hp. it was about $200,000 and it's the closest to AMG GT S IMO, but for twice the price.
@AntoniusTyas9 жыл бұрын
+g1981c 997 GT2 RS has a 3.6-litre twin turbo flat 6 with 620bhp, and it's out of production already since 2011. It's closest rival would be AMG SLS Black... Current closest rival (power-wise) is 991 Turbo. Costs roughly the same, has roughly same power output but only AWD and had shedloads more torque.
@g1981c9 жыл бұрын
+Antonius Tyaswidyono yes you are right it's 3.6 liter. i mixed it up with gt3 rs.

But... But..But I like the SLS more.. specially the Gull Wing Doors. it looks bigger more like a GT car, a fantastic combination of GT and Supercar. The New rear tail lights looked too much like the S-Coupe, it fits well on the S-coupe but if you put it on the GT, the arse is just ugly. Still love the old SLS tho despite the gearbox problems.

Matt Lawrence Romanes I mean the GT's interior looks amazing. but the exterior looked too much like 911 or F-type..which is not bad but too popular. and the engine, I understand how 4.0T is more eco, save more fuel, and everything but I miss the 6.2 so much. The first sport car I drove in my life was the C63..its the base version. it weights around 4K lbs but still pulls like hell. I have never experienced that in M3 or the new Mustang GT..its just...the power makes you laugh.
@mattromanes9 жыл бұрын
Kevin Li It looks nothing like the other two. The 911 looks like a Beetle with a spoiler, and the F-Type, well it's gorgeous. The C63 ain't a sports car. It's a sedan. Its the performance version of the C-Class.

For as long as Porsche keeps the engine "at the wrong end" on the 911, nothing will touch it. Even if better cars will be made or have been made, the 911 will still be dominant. And not because its layout gives it superior dynamics, but because it gives it different dynamics. There's no other sports car in the world with the engine in the back, there's no other car that feels so different than anything else. In a blind folded test (let's asume you would do such a test) you would never be mistaken in recognizing a 911, while you could be with other cars. What I'm saying is that you never really "take on" the 911, you just say it as a marketing stunt, so people know you're serious about something :).
@xboy43319 жыл бұрын
Only sports car with the engine in the back?? The Lamborghini Aventador, Huracan Diablo, Countach and Gallardo, Ferrari 458, LaFerrari, F430, F50 and F40, Audi R8, Bugatti Veyron, Ford GT, Ariel Atom, Lotus Exige and Elise, and many, many more all have the engine in the back. I really don't get what you're on about.
@mariuszanfir22989 жыл бұрын
Trygve Germo All those cars have the engine positioned centrally. Yeah, at the back of the driver, but not "hanging" behind the rear axle like the 911. It has a lot of more weight on the rear axle than most of the cars.

Are some of you actually sending Chris Harris money? Are you crazy? The guy works for Hearst Magazines, the company that owns Road & Track and Car and Driver! Haven't you seen his features recently on their web sites? Why don't you donate that money to a REAL charity or worthy cause and help those who are sick and/or destitute?
@jeffpuha81879 жыл бұрын
***** Nice language. Typical of today's women. Yup, it's your money and you're certainly entitled to spend it any way you want to. I was just pointing out that Harris makes a good living and is really quite cheeky, whining about the cost of making videos and asking people to donate to him. If you're feeling particularly magnanimous, you could donate to Donald Trump or Warren Buffet while you're at it. You know it costs a lot of money to run financial empires.
@mattborman57809 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying. He's established in this game and already makes good money. That said I want him to keep doing this, and I don't expect him to run a charity and produce these videos with his own money, for my enjoyment. I'm in favor of being able to give someone money for a product I really value. I actually appreciate the opportunity to give my money directly to the main producer of the video so he can do more of what viewers want, without the filtering of Hearst magazine and others or concern for sponsors, etc. He's trying a different revenue stream, one that allows him more independence. Whether Chris has money or is 'grassroots' is irrelevant to me - there are costs associated with doing this type of video independently, and as a happy viewer, I'm happy to contribute. It's clear that Chris loves doing this, and I'm trusting that my contribution will help enable him to keep bringing more content. Keep it up Chris!

I agree with you jeff. It makes me sick but angry when they admit that they'd rather donate to a wealthy man that is going to continue what he enjoys doing anyway. What do you viewers think? If you i don't donate then he won't update you with reviews? It's his occupation! He's not going to stop if you don't donate. And you still say you think he's more worthy than charity. Probably because half of the comments here belong to egnostics. Coming from a catholic this is sickening!

Cole Jones You're right, Cole. The world's ethics and morals are twisted by Satan and all the lost souls who worship him, whether they realize it or not. You to jeff, merry Christmas:) those words will catch use with you Elizabeth. You can't change a Catholics mind about God. I am not to judge because it is a sin so I'm not going to say anymore.

So, here are my thoughts, and I'm going to address the video as well as the car. On the car, I'm impressed from a technological point of view, but I feel that the styling is not a success: the SLS wasn't pretty, but it was distinctive, and the gullwing doors are still as fabulous as ever. This... isn't. The noise isn't fabulous either, and not having a good reason to rev it out beyond 6500rpm... that's disappointing in a performance car supposedly designed for enjoyment. I understand the whole emissions bollocks, but this would have been a better car with the M156/159 in it. Also, while I understand the whole dual-clutch thing, it's so fast yet it's also smooth etc etc, I still think a car like this should have a manual gearbox. OK, so manuals aren't in the M-B DNA, but with Porsche and Corvette offering manuals and a manual F-type on the way, this has to be discussed. On the video front, this once again reminds me why I like and admire Chris Harris as a presenter. Not just because he's a Drifting God etc etc (although seeing him pulling such beautifully progressive, controlled slides is a privilege), but because, even with 'only' ten minutes' running time, he can produce an engaging review which explains the technical aspects in a way which interests, enthuses and enlightens but does not baffle the layman, as well as showing the lairy on-track action etc. If this is the standard of which Harris & Carey, freed from the shackles of that idiot Musial (who must be kicking himself right now for losing them to the whole Drive+ debacle), are capable, then count me in. I'll be looking up how to put in an exception for AdBlock on Mr Harris' videos. I don't have spare cash to donate, I'm afraid, but I do urge those who are well off and have enjoyed these videos to support Mr Harris through Patreon. If ever the opportunity calls for Mr Harris to go to television, I'd back that - would make a pleasant change to the two idiots plus May...
@spartus099 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Maybe Jag opting to offer the ZF manual in 2016 will bring MB to discuss such a course of action for their "base" GT-AMG that will allegedly come with a 3 liter I6.
@richardharrold97369 жыл бұрын
Nick Freeman-Clark M-B are returning their sixes to an inline layout? I must admit that I rather feared the straight six was dead, with Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota/Lexus and Nissan all having abandoned it in the 1990s, and Volvo now switching to an all-four-cylinder lineup (which I fear they will come to regret), only BMW and, bizarrely, Daewoo (with a Porsche-designed 2-litre) remaining as its last bastions - and BMW's sole remaining straight six is now turbocharged, which it. Rather a shame. I hope the N/A straight six does make a comeback!
@TheYBGOON9 жыл бұрын
I like the look of this and gulling doors on this car would never have worked. its a turbo and it sounds amazing for a turbo which is also why it may not be a good reason to rev beyond 6500rpm. Im sure the 911 turbo only revs up to 6500rpm. I agree with a manual but i think its just a bit too fast. For instance you can't get a 911 turbo with a manual. Maybe the base model should have it. I guess styling though is down to the person viewing.
@richardharrold97369 жыл бұрын
***** Which is a marketing decision, driven by a desire to be "relevant" to motorsport and also because they're marginally more efficient than a standard manual - and Lamborghini still offered a manual in the Gallardo right to the end. There were some manual Ferrari 599s and 612s too. Porsche has gone back to manual for the Cayman GT4 and has indicated that the next-gen GT3 will do likewise... and the Corvette achieves class-leading fuel economy with a manual, as well as being significantly faster than a GT3.

First showed the technical data and translated it to an understandable level for people, then showed spoke so good about the strong sides and the differences. And at the end, his personal opinion.
