Copic markers are great! But I would also recommend ohuhu brushmarkers (maybe even more than copics) they have a decent variety of colors in the 48 set except there are no good light skin tones so for that I’d recommend getting a few copics to fill out the gaps but you can do a lot with just the 48 set (even tho there are some colors that are a bit repetitive and unnecessary)

I love how you pointed out that all colors connect to each other. It reminds me of My watercolor teacher who always told me to mix my colors and not use them straight out of the tube.
@ChrisHongArt3 жыл бұрын
using them straight out of the tube is great when you want that colour to be as pure/intense as possible :D and then every other colour you use in the picture, you can mix a a bit of that "star" colour into it which will help make it feel cohesive!

LMAO omg Chrisss hahaha, it's so funny how looking back i always thought I'd rather have went to a regular highschool cause i felt like all it did was create obnoxious art-related drama in my life (like teachers shaming me for drawing anime, wasting time on school related 'art-projects' when i'd rather have just focused more on drawing my own shit). But I do think because the experience was so horrible overall, i am pretty much unable to see the positives looking back, even though I'm sure there were. x'D

Thats very cool. It was nice to hear from someone who had that experience. That and the thing about art school... A really enjoyable video, it's nice hearing your experiences and takes on things (I'd love to hear more about your jobs!). While you use studies as a way to push back own creations, I am doing the exact opposite. I know studying various fundamentals will really push me forward but the sheer boredom of having to learn names and placement has driven me to create a lot of art last year. Art which I am not satisfied with in the end bc it just doesn't look right bc I don't have my fundamentals down, what a circle of despair lol.

Hi Chris! 🌸 Hope you are doing well! At the beginning of the video you talk about doing master copies to get better a little more fast, and actually I'm studying your style in this last months, especially your way of watercoloring. I found it so complete and unique..it's amazing! 😃 You're extremely talented 🌸 I wanted to ask you: how do you approach values and tones of color in watercolor? Because I've also followed your classes on portrait drawing (in pencil and colored pencil), but I really struggle with the approach in watercolor, and also to exploiter its biggest quality, which is layering. I kinda go with local color at first, but then I don't know what to do. It then ends there, being a lil flat, or I go a little too much heavy 😕 all due most likely to my impatience.. 😤 From your videos I can see you don't mind about wetting a drying area to add your little touch of colors(always slightly various but still in armony with the others and with the right value), you always figure out how to get a soOo even finish in the end! So "you don't mind" in the very first layers, but also it seems like you know what brush stroke is better in this area rather that that one, how much water goes in the brush and how much on the paper, the effects that adding water or dry with a thirsty brush makes, and most of all, you know how to render soOo many stuff! And so on. Now: I know all these capabilities comes from practicing non stop for years and years, but do you have any advice on these themes in general? Especially about how to approach a piece's value in watercolor, and how to get better rendering skill. Every advice would be great: I try to extract everything I can see from your speedpaintings, but if you feel to add anything it would be gold for me! 🤩 Hope I didn't bother you with this papyrus ahahaha 😄😁 Wish you a good day! Thank you in advance for your time! ✨

Hey Chris, might not see this but it’s been worrying me for a while now. I often feel unmotivated to draw if I feel like I need to study instead. It makes drawing feel more like a chore than something fun. I know I *need* to study to be able to draw how I want. I just don’t know how to get out of this cycle.

YESS I’ve definitely been waiting and hoping for an art book 👀💖 I’ll definitely get it once it’s available! Do you have an idea for the range of prices yet?
@ChrisHongArt3 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure yet but i think the book will be over 100 pgs and in hardcover, so between $45~$50. I know that sounds like a lot compared to other art books out there but because I'll be completely self-funding, self-publishing, and therefore storing and fulfilling it on my own I think $45 is what makes sense for me. I'll most likely be kick-starting this project! :D

In your style, I see a lot of the 1950's. Has anything specific from that era inspired you?
@ChrisHongArt3 жыл бұрын
i'm not sure if it's anything specific.. I've always just been super drawn to the aesthetic of that era (mid century i guess)! Anything from clothing, furniture, illustrations, advertising.. it all had more of a "designed" feel to what we see now, at least in my opinion.

Did you actually study anatomy of facial futures before drawing faces with block in ? like imagine muscle and skull placement over reference ? Do you feel it is useful? necessary?
@lisandepuredream90563 жыл бұрын
my animation school doesn't teach anatomy :c I do know that the fine arts school teaches it tho, and even tho it sounds like a horrible pain in the butt it is something I regret we don't have since it's an important class to have
@ChrisHongArt3 жыл бұрын
oh that's interesting, our program was super focused on anatomy classes! Our program put more emphasis on it than the illustration course did at the same school 🤔we also focused on doing very quick gestures (30s, 1 min, 2 mins, 5 mins) because animators are supposed to draw quickly and be able to get the overall gesture of the pose down w.o getting bogged down by the details!
@lisandepuredream90563 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisHongArt my school is rather new ( it was founded 3 years ago) and also not a stand alone institute, but part of the theater and film school, so I guess it's just that the teachers and staff are just new to it and inexperienced and don't know yet everything they should teach. We should in theory do quick skethes too during the graphics class but that class is just a mess of random stuff , and we also have a few clases that don't teach stuff that we really need for animation, but other unrelated art stuff. I also find it ironic that it is in theory the most expensive school in my country despite being small and improvized, and rather unprofessional and messy compared to other animation schools ( i say in theory cause I'm from europe so normally it's just free)
