To me the main source of struggle was that I used to believe practice makes perfect, and I kept practicing over and over without a proper understanding of what I needed to focus on, so I kinda ended up re-enforcing whatever mistakes I was making and that made getting rid of these mistakes quiet difficult. It wasn't until recently that I learned that I should practice AFTER learning the fundamentals not the other way around.. also,, not to depend so much on memory and actually use references during practice time.. I guess that sums it up

Aru Chi I literally keep running into the issue of not using a reference photo when I know I should. But then, there I go again, not using a reference photo LOL. I can draw people without a reference photo but I try to apply that to everything else and it’s not as good as it could be 😋

I recently watched a vid about a manga artist. He stated, that in order to get better, you need to draw alot. And you need to draw from reference. In Japan its all about copying the artist you like. When the interviewer said that, in western countrys people think drawing without reference is said to be cheating the mangaka loughed. He then said, how could you learn to draw when you don`t see how things are supposed to be. The interesting part in the Interview was, that the mangaka made clear, that its not cheating to use reference. Even tracing is good practice. Because your eyes and your hands need to learn how things are supposed to be. You cant learn that out of thin air. And even using aid in your drawings like 3d figurines to draw over is good. Because it saves time and all drawing (manga) is about is the end product.

Fantastic, Florent! I'll always recall the first thing that was said to me that helped me grow artistically. A gallery owner was watching me draw. I was most likely around nine or ten years old. She said, “Think of everything as shapes," and pointed to the features of the face I was struggling to sketch. "Draw the shapes." 🖤

@FlorentFargesarts
@FlorentFargesarts 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, but for many people who'd consider that they're "not interested" in drawing, it is possible that this lack of interest comes from too much frustration, from not understanding what drawing implies. Some people give up and don't want to accept what they think is a struggle... This is why I think it's important to learn some technique and start from the most basic to the most complex.

Florent Farges - arts I agree. But to extend on the post my interest extends to a dedication and commitment to figure things out. You are totally right to say that for some people things fall into place more easily. I also experienced seeing people gravitate to more easy things because "art just didn't work out fast enough" for them. And we all know we get more excited by easy stuff. I just can't get excited by math...

Albert Einstein: 'it's not that I'm so smart, It's just that I stay with problems longer.' I think the same about being able to draw good, or even singing. People with talent are more obsessed with their problems and try to solve/improve them over and over again. Adults believe its to late for them and think you should have started young. That's false. That's just because adults don't want to stay with problems long because they get frustrated negatively easily. Just bring the fun back!

I often stare at things and imagining that I'm painting them. This is practice of a sort. I believe it's not just the actual painting time but practicing the other processes too. I also dream that I'm painting. I've done that since I was very young. I would cry if my mum woke me up for school while I was dreaming of painting.

In the art class, I am always frustrated with classmates who have great visual memory for drawing. However, their drawing skills are average when they move into oil painting. I am better with painting because my visual memory focuses more on values shade vs light than the details. Also, some people see everything in geometric shapes and angles or they are excellent seeing color differences. Art is practice with competent guidance and motivation. Those who are always motivated to improve and to learn will beneficially evolve their talents.

I cannot remember exactly where I first heard/read this, but: “Just draw what you see” has really helped me. Understanding that our brains operate in a way that encourages step saving processes, and can not always be trusted in this context. My brain would seem to slip into auto correct mode, and left unchecked, my drawing would be full of mistakes. I am not sure, but I think it was something about optical illusions. I have learned to stop and course correct early in the process, and the brain seems to have learned to “see” in the desired direction, or at least it doesn’t auto correct as much. I often wonder that for people who seem to do this naturally, it accounts for some of the “talent” that others perceive in them?

People think drawing is an innate talent because in most cases, as a child they saw that one student who was drawing better than the rest of the class and when they saw they didn’t draw as good as that one,they thought they aren’t talented in drawing. Same happened to me. There was some other kids who were drawing more beautiful pictures than I, but I was in a better position when it comes to writing, so I choose a career path in this field. Now I regret and I wish I was more persistent in drawing and better my skills with lots of practice. I have friends who work as comic book artists illustrators and graphic designers and I envy them a lot.

Drawing and sculpting has always felt natural and fairly easy to me. I always wondered why? I realize now that it's because I have always paid close attention to the world. I notice the texture in the rock, wood gain, fur. I notice the sizes of different objects in relation to each other. I notice how light falls on objects. I think this is where the "talent" is. It allows me to notice if something is "right", when I'm drawing and it almost feels intuitive.

Its obvious that almost anyone can learn to draw. But the question was, why are some people better at it than others? Interest/passion/obsession is an obvious answer. But thats like saying its all about how much time you invest in it. Of course you will be better than somebody else if the only thing you ever do is draw. I would say that a nontrivial part of the equation would be how good you are at visualizing stuff. Not too long ago i stumbled on a thread on 4chan, where artists were talking about how good they are at visualizing images in their head. It ranged from artists that could vividly imagine a scene or objects to the unfortunate artists that could not imagine anything. When they closed their eyes and tried to imagine something, what they would get is nothing. They would just see the underside of their eyelid... Im one of those unfortunate artists (or more accurately a wannabe artist). I can barely visualize a faint line, for a fraction of a second. And thats it. In essence i have to skip the "visualizing stuff in your head" part and come up with stuff straight on the paper. Unlike Kim Jung Gi, i *have* to do thumbnails and sketches to plan my drawings/paintings, and even when im copying photographs (you know, for practice) i have to use scribbly line, or the angles and proportions will come up way off. It all is a lot of trial and error, but i do come up with something half decent once in a while.

I am a artist and my focus is in realistic drawings. I agree wit your assessment the road blocks beginners experience. But I would state more strongly that there are some people with a real talent. The talent it’s self is a combination of abilities to perceive (focusing thought and observation), gathering and retain what is important about an image for drawing of the image properly. This is what is sometimes called “natural talent” and in some ways it maybe so. It can be developed further and added to with techniques and specific skills. But beginners who struggle with drawing can develop these abilities too. Thank you for you insightful talk. I love your channel and alway look forward to your videos.

Natural talent exists in some way, because for some people, learning these skills just takes a couple of hours. Others need to work so hard at it that at some point they might give up completely. Everyone has to work to get good at drawing, the gift is just that it's a lot easier for more "naturally talented" people.

I've noticed that many artists today seem to prefer photo realistic drawings, but personally, I find them rather boring. Every eye lash, every pore and pimple, it just distracts from the solid form. You don't feel the weight of the thing in such drawings, the only objective being to mimic superficial texture. Why put so much time and effort in a black and white drawing when reality can be so much better expressed through paint? I find that the greatest painters of the past avoided this kind of drawing and I think they were better artists for doing so.

Florent, thanks for your great videos in the first place. I think what separates successful from hopeless painters is consistency. I’ve always been told I’m good at drawing. I think I’m pretty good but not as good as I could be if I practiced. I’m not sure if it relates but I have really good spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination. If I throw a ball high in the air, as long as I see where it is in the air right when it starts going back down, I can catch it without looking (95% of the time lol). I am also able to remember the rough length of things...not in terms of numbers but purely in my head. Another odd thing about me is that I can recognize a face I saw once 20 years ago. When I’m sketching from a reference, I notice that I am imagining the image on my paper/canvas, and kind of drawing over the imaginary image with pencil, or paint, etc. I’m focusing more on lines, negative space, shapes, and depth above all. I think it’s all about how your mind happens to work. Also, a love for art is key. Just want to add, an interest in physics and even human anatomy helps in my case. Physics really help tell the story of Why things appear as they do.

I got really good at realistic drawing once l developed the mental habit of interpreting what l saw in three dimensions as a two-dimensional surface and drawing that two-dimensional image. It also helps to measure visual distance using some visual baseline, e.g. the lips are 0.75 the length of the nose you have already sketched on the drawing surface. It actually helps to squint so you see a two-dimensional image through one eye and to use your thumb as a measuring stick, as you might have seen artists do in cartoons. Lastly, practice.

The ability to draw is a form of intelligence similar to other abilities like social intelligence, musical ability, mathematical, logical, literature, etc. which can be learned through training of the mind to perceive things in a certain way, or which part of the brain should dominate.. Nice topic. Reminds me of the book by Betty Edwards "Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain".

Hand-eye coordination also plays an important role in drawing, some people just have good hand-eye coordination, making it easier for them to "hit the paper where it matters" Also another important thing is how different people see the world around them. To expand on the example of drawing an eye, some people just see some dark lines and try to reproduce those, basically as a 2 dimensional shape or contour. Other people treat everything as a 3d shape, like for example the eye as a ball and the eyelid a piece of skin resting on the ball and all the "lines ' as shadows cast by this 3d system. Those are all things that can be learned by everybody, there is nothing mystical about being able to draw just as there is nothing mystical about being able to make an omlette. I do not believe in gifted people, art schools are a proof that this stuff can be learned , it may take some people more time than others, but anyone can learn it.

If the temperature isn’t perfect. If I don’t have any music to cover a ticking clock. If my dogs are restless in the other room. If I’m hungry or too full. I don’t have trouble seeing details I have trouble with proportion mostly. I didn’t use to 20 years ago. Just thinking out loud. Often my first most spontaneous attempts are better than after working hard on a subject....not always though. And if I have a really expensive piece of paper to draw on I get more things wrong! Emotional drawing. I need to tame my emotions. I think I remember seeing a title like that in your stuff

Great tips! While studying fine arts, in the beginner's classes our professor was always stressing out the importance of an accurate drawing before moving to actual painting or details as you said Florent. The memory comes with practice I think. The more you do the better you become. If I might add something is, whenever you guys draw or paint, keep looking at your reference whether it's the photo or you are drawing from life. Constantly keep looking don't try to rely too much on your memory as it might be Inaccurately deceiving. Also it helps in my opinion to look at the reference from different perspectives as well as looking at the piece you're doing on canvas et cetera. Stepping back also might help. The further you step back the less details your eye depicts which allows you to automatically focus on actual shapes. I hope that helps. Again Florent. Amazing video!

I'm HORRIBLE artist and I only ever see black I can't imagine images in my mind, it BLEW MY MIND that people can vividly see landscapes, images, colors, ext. Nope I close my eyes and its just black, darkness, nothing. I wonder if that has anything to do with being better at realistic art.

I think the difference between someone who is bad at art vs good at art has nothing to do with how well they can draw. It's about perfectionism. Someone can draw or paint in any style and have it turn out objectively not great. Poor composition, colour sense, proportions, etc. But they can still draw, and even enjoy it; while someone else might be able to produce one or two technically good drawings every other year, but for the most part is paralyzed when sitting down to a blank page. And the reasons are exactly as you said: too much focus on details, and not enough on making an impression of something.

I try to hold the photo I am drawing very close to the canvas to minimize my mistakes I make. I also take my pencil and, not touching my photo, trace the “angled line or curve” on photo then use the same motion on my canvas to draw it.

I want to understand a thing. Why are so many artists obsessed with drawing realistically? I mean, why reproduce something rathe than create new worlds? I am just starting to learn everything about drawing and I want to understand. Because, in my mind it just doesn't make so much sense to draw Michael Jackson perfectly, for example. I understand that knowing how to draw realistically helps be more creative in more imaginative paintings, I think it's essential to know the rules in order to break them. But I really do not understand why everybody is so impressed with a painting of a tree and a house and human face. We see reality every moment of our lives. But thank you for the video, it helps me see things from a different perspective and understand better some things.

I’m a little late to the party, but having over the last few months taught myself to draw, I’d say the biggest difference between those who can and can’t draw is that those who can’t, don’t. Interest that is natural will have a different representation than acquired interest. Ex. I may not be interested in mathematics, but I have to do good in it. I will work more,no doubt,but the person who is naturally interested in Maths will always do better than me. Same with drawing. Another example ,singing. Not all are born Lata. I may be interested in singing , but I cannot be a Lata.

Hey! I love to paint, but in order to paint, I need to know how to draw. Your videos are very helpful. I’m hoping to go to France in about 2 years art, but I know zero French. Would that be a problem?

Hi Katy, it's great that your come to France, I don't think the language is going to be an issue... Learning is fast when you're in the country and have no other choice but to listen and talk to people around you.

Everyone I draw is a cartoon. When I went to paint my Jesus all my artist friends said he looked like a rockstar but that’s not what I was trying to conceive in my oil painting. I was seriously painting. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to keep trying to paint until I get it right or just go with my characters. Do you come across a lot of painters with this dilemma?
@FlorentFargesarts
@FlorentFargesarts 5 жыл бұрын
I suggest you look at other examples of artists who have produced what you intended to paint in the first place. If it's a painting of Christ, you should have no problem finding millions of wonderful paintings. Try to look very carefully at their composition and artistic decisions and put yourself in their shoes. Going with your character is not a choice, it will happen no matter what. But your subject can be a better representation of your intentions, it doesn't change anything to your character.

People who *know how to draw:* those who take a huge dollop of *passion* (without passion, nothing works) *and mix it* with their *raw talent,* and then *commit* to those 10 000 hours that *has to be done* to become really good!

Make it look like the person with the fewest lines....my next few exercises.... I used to be pretty good without working hard ages ago. Now I have to work harder. I think anybody can do art but I know some people are talented. For example that Chinese boy in 1st grade making accomplished paintings with tempera...he was on the news. Prodigy types. Not many of those out there. I read Degas said something to the effect he Could re do a painting up to 20 times and that everything he did was not spontaneous at all but controlled and disciplined. So there are different kinds of artists doing things different kinds of ways.....if your way isn’t giving you the results.....study about art principles. It should speed things up quite a bit.

YES... I think the difference is some people have a the gift of a PHOTOGENIC MEMORY in which it allows them to quickly transfer that image straight to the canvas with out any distraction. I find I'm able at times to hold an image of a shape in my memory long enough to quickly transfer it back to the canvas. Then at times I find I have to quickly switch my eye focus "back & forth" from the photo reference to my drawing in order to draw more accurately.

Great video, thank you so much Florent Farges - arts! While I believe all are capable of drawing well when observation/translation/technique are listened to and applied, the energy of interest/ joy and passion add the impetus for achieving great results. Because I have experienced that where there is joy, results come more easily. Also, not to "take score" on how far oneself has come--it is a joyful process no matter where you are. Anyone reading this comment, you may want to view Mr. Farges' video on "Drawing from Memory" which is great for more on this subject--and he recommends a great book "Drawing Course" and that has been great fun and a great help to my more daily practice. Many thanks!!!

Really cool talk Florent! Very helpful! My go to instructor for drawing is Alphonso Dunn on KZbin! To me, He's amazing! I'm just beginning so everything I do basically looks like an elephant using its trunk on a canvas or an inmate in an asylum with a pencil or some of his( or her) own shit! But I'm learning! Thank you so much Florent! Go look up. ALPHONSO DUNN ON KZbin, HE HAS SOME BOOKS ALSO I THINK! PS. I AM NOT AFFILLIATED WITH ANYONE I TALK ABOUT AND MAKE ZERO MONEY FROM ANY PRODUCTS I MENTION IN ANY OF MY COMMENTS! JUST SAYIN! Oh yeah, one commenter had a funny thing to say on one of his videos, something like " only an hour ago I could only draw a stick figure but now, after watching Alphonso I can draw a stick figure with a face! The video was on drawing a face for portrait of course! Well, maybe you had to have been there? Or, maybe I AM in an asylum!! OK thanks again Florent, may I call you Florent? OK BYEE! PS. I THINK YOU WILL LIKE ALPHONSO FLORENT, I MEAN ALPHONSO DUNN, FLORENT, OF COURSE! HE CAN BE VERY TECHNICAL! IN A SIMPLE WAY! FOR US RETARDED BEGINNERS! LOVE WHAT YOU'RE DOIN MAN! KEEP CRANKING OUT THE GOOD STUFF! " ITS ALL GOOD"!!! OK byee!

Visual memory , even when drawing directly from a reference when you look back and fourth , you are remembering even if it’s just for a second , in that second what you remember of forget makes or breaks, Degas believed this, so did gammel. Train the visual memory , it can be improved , to what extent I don’t know, but even a little bit will help.

I think there is a natural talent in drawing, because I was able to draw since I was a child, and I was not taught how to; it just happened naturally. Also, drawing is something I just do occasionally for fun (I don’t spend hours of practice) and yet I find myself always good at it.

I am not trynna brag, that when I was 7 & 1/2, I began learning how to mix more of drawing bigger details, with drawing smaller ones. Yet, during Highschool, the devil tried different ways to steal my drawing talent. In college, and bits of times out of college, i had to lightly more relearn how to be confident in drawing. I now, can draw a little bit faster, & a little more detailed, than I could last year. Yet, as a colored artist in America, I kinda more do feel the need to add some little details. They show bits of my skills. Plus, brown & black artists are or were taught that we have to work twice as hard, to get the credits we deserve. Ciao.
