I have found it's better to use the rounded edge of a router base when routing along a straight edge. That way small rotations won't affect the dado. I notice you use the flat edge. Have I been doing this wrong? Love the piece!
@KastnerFurniture Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what I would normally do - think I just set this one up in a bit of an awkward way and didn't really have much option to do that without flipping the router around and using the handles backwards... if you're careful and use the flat edge it can work out fine :)

The circle can be dangerous because contrary to intuition, the bit is not perfectly centered on every router so rotations will have an impact

You mind providing very basic dimensions of this? Love the size you chose and would hate to be just shy of the piece of walnut ply as it's expensive. even knowing the length, width and height (minus the legs) would help tremendously. Thanks for sharing your video!
@ConnorRockwell-u6z Жыл бұрын
It must be something like 48w x 24h x 16d. I was able to spec out all of the pieces on one sheet of ply with those dimensions. There are 3 dividers on the bottom that I believe are close to 14x16 and then the top 2 dividers are 10x16 give or take placement of the middle section.

Won't the speaker vibrations effect the turntable?
@KastnerFurniture10 ай бұрын
Yeah valid, was only like this for the video. The whole thing is part of a big wall unit, and it's mounted to the wall now. Speakers are very far away from the turntable, and the feedback/vibrations are negligible.

If you are in Australia then that means you built this entire piece upside down which makes it even more impresive.

What stain, and top coat did you use on this? Looks incredible!
@KastnerFurniture Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Was finished with two coats of hadwax oil - no stain or anything else on the timber. The one I used was from Whittle Waxes (Australian made) and used their classic finish, which is somewhere between a matte and a satin sheen.

This is amazing! Nicely done. Also, what sort of tape measure is that? Love how it sits flat
@KastnerFurniture3 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks! It's called "FlatBack", they're made by FastCap. Sitting flat is great for marking dimensions, but also really useful on anything curved which regular tape measures fail at.

I love the cabinet design and finish. Very nice work. I have one question and one critique. My question: Without a back, does the cabinet suffer any racking/wobble? My critique is with the production/editing. In today's hurried world, I would like a shorter video of around 12-15 minutes. If you edit out repetitive wiping, sanding, chiseling, and speed up cutting/routing/drilling scenes the audience receives the instruction step without waiting for the water to boil, so to speak. Vocal instructions, tips, and reasoning are always more helpful to someone like me than soothing music which is great in movies but not educational. Otherwise, loved your work and the project.

This is a great idea in theory, but in practice, not so much. I would advise placing the turntable on a separate unit because, as it stands, the speakers will generate resonance in this cabinet, which will travel up into the turntable and on to negatively affect the ability of the stylus to track the record groove properly. At the very least this will cause smearing of detail & at worst, it may generate feedback. 😉
