god. Those horror stories are really a nightmare. Amazing Marc was able to get through that rough patch. Really insane and like he said. a tremendous amount or pressure on him to deliver!

From experience: 1. Drink cognac (sparingly) when your cords need to warm up and vibrate like a mother of all pearls! 2. Use Panda Hai, a Chinese herb, to clear your cavities from mucous. Nothing else is like it! 3. Use steroids when voice is utterly gone and you have a show to play that same day! Not all habits must be healthy. Some have to be efficient, especially if the concert is sold out. Having said that, vocal health should be the priority. If a singer has the luxury of time to maintain healthy habits, it should be the choice, THE life style to embrace. Unfortunately, it is not always the case, especially when you are on a tight schedule, and the show is resting on your shoulders. It’s hard to stick to the healthy code when on the road also! Good healthy cousins are not always readily available. It’s hard to compromise sometimes and choose health over doing your job. But one must try.

First, so I don't get attacked, the disclaimer that I have adored Marc for years so not at all a negative comment in case anyone reads it that way, more of a compliment in my eyes. Between these and the one where he tried to teach us how to sing like Freddie, I feel like most of this stuff is stuff that literally is just second nature for him. I think without a vocal coach (seeing as how this is all very new to him) he was doing most things already naturally, or figured them out on his own as his career moved forward and he matured vocally. Like was pointed out, even when Marc is trying to go monotone for the point of topic, he's still perfectly exercising his vocal cords. I'm just sitting here wondering if vocal coaches get bored with him..lol. Not much to work on when a masterpiece is on the other side of the mic!! IMHO of course!!! Now, that being said, clearly I watch because why pass up a moment of Marc!!!!

You're absolutely right! He came by all this naturally, by experimenting and being introspective as to how things felt, and then sounded. He had/has very little in the way of formal training... knows no terms or definitions. That's how most amazing singers are! They stumble on stuff by being musically and experientially curious... Then following and embracing what happens. Not many people have done this. Lots of people want to have a great voice and want to sing freely, but don't know where to start and don't know how to get to a point where they don't sound and feel awkward. That's why it's so fun, as a vocal coach to learn from singers like Marc. We get to reverse engineer what he has stumbled upon and experiment with our own voices! I'm not here to coach Marc... I'm here to learn from him and help others learn in the process. It's what I love doing! And I have found its more effective than following traditional vocal practicing methods. Follow your inspirations, seek to understand them and be intensely introspective during the journey!

Giving up alcohol has been the single thing that has helped me gain better control and consistency on a day to day basis with my voice. Drinking causes so much dehydration and causes poor sleep that the voice never gets a chance to fully recover. Even 24 hours after drinking I noticed my voice was fatigued when trying to warm up. These days I find I can build on my voice day after day without feeling like I'm approaching each practice session from a negative starting point.

Alcohol affecting hearing: i know veteran mastering engineers have said eating food / drinking caloric beverages, etc, anything that causes changes in blood chemistry affect your hearing temporarily. Reduction of high frequency hearing, things like that.

The alcohol one is so double edged I think. I have a really high tolerance, and am incredibly anxious at most shows. So 1-2 *can* help me relax my muscles and actually perform better. However if I haven’t been staying hydrated during the day, it can really wreck my voice if I’m not careful. What I notice going first actually if I drink too much, is good breath support. Sober, it feels so automatic: inhale through the stomach, open throat, hit that spot where it feels like you are loud without effort. When drinking (too much) though all those things start to feel seperate. Like “I took my deep inhale, why do I still feel like I’m struggling?” Or “why do I feel like I’m pushing? Oh my shoulders have risen and my posture Is slumped and my breathing is shallow, because I’m too damn inebriated.” Been vaping for a long time. Used to smoke. Can’t really shake that one, but that’s definitely a big one for me now is to try to at least not smoke an hour before singing. If I go a whole day without vaping my voice feels strange and weak. I have a theory that if your a smoker, and learned to sing *as* a smoker, you are singing with vocals cords that are often times swollen to some degree, and without that swelling your accustomed to, they can feel weaker in the moment. That’s not some ridiculous argument to keep smoking, just my best guess of why singing feels harder without. Could also just be muscle tension of withdrawel though. I didn’t hear y’all mention it, but honestly caffeine I’ve come to find is worse for my immediate singing ability than either alcohol or vaping. I quit drinking coffee everyday a year or so ago, and now if I have a coffee or significant caffeine, my voice just feels fried by the end of the day. I mean not really fried, but just super tired. Kind of a double whammy. Go to work and have coffee, get off work and go to show, now all the tiredness you opted out of is hitting you, AND your dehydrated. Maybe caffeine like right before a show would be different but jeez I’d rather not have caffeine in general, much less late at night. Great info as always. Love the down to earth approach of this channel. Really accessible and I’ve learned a lot.

Hey Chris, do you happen to have a video on reflux and singing? I just got diagnosed with diaphragmatic hernia? and have out of nowhere the sickest GERD (reflux) problems i could ever imagine. I was wondering if it was because of pressure breathing (wrong support, screaming, getting grit into my voice) I remember that you have had some troubles with it too, and I was curious about how you handle this. I just read, that like 20% of people heave Reflux episodes once in their lives and I am curious if therer are some things i can do to practice singing without strainging my voice and if therer are things i should totally avoid regarding singing and reflux.
