4:42 - 4:56 This is the importance of watching SO MANY videos on one small topic before moving on to something bigger. As many videos as I've watched that say the exact same thing, this specific clip and the way he specifically words it here finally just made me get so incredibly easily. Guys, I can't stress this enough; DO THOROUGH RESEARCH BEFORE YOU ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING! Things like this are the difference between enriching your voice and completely destroying it. Remember that!

My girlfriend has a sign on the wall of her dance school: “dance like nobody’s watching” … this is why Chris keeps underscoring the playful part of this. If you’re not afraid to sound “stupid” then you’re not gonna grow. The main thing I’ve gotten from him is that you don’t control your voice …you get to know it. Letting your voice try things is like asking your voice a question… And here’s another meme: “there are no stupid questions”

I find myself imitating the original artist's sound without realizing. I don't even know how MY mixed voice is supposed to sound or feel. I can always get the tones and hit the notes I want to, but it ALWAYS sounds drastically different depending on the artist I'm covering.

Chris you are a legend. I asked you this 2 days ago and now here you have the answer. I was playing with breakup in my cat mix beforehand but lost confidence in it because it didn't seem to join with the chest whisper grit method. But you've confirmed I was on the right track after all. Thank you so much. Now we just have to figure out how the hell Maynard seemingly whisper grits the whole way up his range. Oh yeah, he's an alien 👽

Sticking to Chris' advice while being patient really shows off how effective his methods are in the long run. When I started, I got really frustrated I couldn't hit my resonance consistently, maintain breath support properly or even exercise my full range without fumbling if going low-to-high in the same melody (or vice versa). After a year of keeping his warm-up schedule and making sure to take notes each session, it helped. I didn't even realize how far I'd come until I went back to a song I struggled on and nailed it in one go, first try. Singing progress is like brushing your teeth: results are in the long term, not short term.

1:00 I have to disagree with you there. Layne has a "technique" that Anyone can learn. I've been perfecting it for like 20 years or so haha and it Is doable. Not easy, definitely not. But if anyone Wants his powerful mix note With that heavy false cord phonenation ON TOP then it's possible. Your distortion example is more a Breaking Up of the folds like you said. But the Layne sound doesn't break up. The clean sound is staying the Same and then you "just" bring the false folds together to Also vibrate creating that lower octave rattling sound together with the clean. But what I do agree on is to play around with our voice to find different placements and sounds. Only way to learn really. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial of the Layne scream later on. Then you'll see more clearly what I mean. I did cover a lot of AiC years ago but the technique is way more refined these days and I understand fully what I'm doing

Amazing as always, very insightful ! Why just yesterday I was experimenting with my chest voice distortion, "lifting heavy", to try and scream and I realised that I was pulling chest up the scale, creating tension and air overflow, bad chord closure and all sorts of problems that made me sore in the throat after barely 30 mins. As a singer that kinda obsesses over control, your discourse on letting things happen and embracing the breaks and the unexpected is really freeing !

That is great Chris. I like that you go into the break. The more I play with the vocal break the more tools i gather for screams, distortion, rapid pitch changes, even it seems to apply to that tibetan throat screaming where you generate two notes an octive apart. The break is your friend once you realise it.

I definitely agree with singing with your own voice and then just trying to layer in whatever style/singer you're going for. Although, I will say; when I started singing, Alice In Chains is what I sang the most, so I do have quite a bit of Layne baked into my voice because of that.

I would also have to sincerely thank you once again cause since I started watching your videos I learned how to use a caracteristic grit in my voice that helps me sing distorted vocals with much more control and without pushing too hard or hurting my throat as in the past. Wow this clears up a lot actually. I actually got nasty distorted mixed voice, before good mixed voice, early on in my singing. I essentially just went into heady mixy stuff and do the heavy lift, but it’s more of a “relax everything.” It’s actually easier than chest mix. When I finally got some lessons (just one actually lol), I learned some excercises to get a good mixed voice. However, when I practiced that for a long time, it did become easier to sing mixed, and to keep my stamina up, but I sort of “forgot” how to distort. Had to go back and re practice. What I learned: Clean mixed voice: practice slides smoothly and quietly. Distorted mix: practice singing with your break, not caring, “lifting”, THEN start caring about notes.

The way you go from a light crisp in your mix to a more powerfully distorted mix in the first phrase of the Rooster Chorus is so nunaced, Chris. Wow. In recent times I experiment to integrate a more "sizzely" light fry into my mixed voice that sounds raspy but also a bit more clean and gentle. On the other hand I've also practiced doing it with a lot of compression, which gives it that brutal aggressive sound. Both have their merrits and uses. But I find when try the light rasp (the one without compression), I sometimes lose the pitch (as soon as I switch on the rasp I'm about 1 semi- or quater tone below). And when I use a lot of compression, it's so much compression that the pitch of the note gets drowned by the distortion and compression. A bit too much! I need to practice the fine-tuning. It's all practice practice practice. :)

My problem is the opposite of this video. I got stuck in distorted mixed voice, and can't sing clean anymore. Watched a lot of KZbin videos, and can't find the information I'm looking for. When your voice is creaky in the upper range, how do you get it un-creaky? This also happened in 2017, but I don't remember what I did to fix it. Last year, I was singing clean, but had a lack of power in the middle range and this year I've been trying to work up more power, and that's when the creaking started happening. If I sing without a warm up, then what happens is my voice will flip into whistle register, even around D4. It sounds like a seagull.

When I try this out I almost always flip down to my subharmonic register. Any tips? Will this disappear over time or am I maybe doing anything wrong?

For me, the mix or the distortion only one can live!!!!!! Either its turns into this gritty false chord growl, or it's this stupid strong power metal scream

Hi there, I would like to send you a 10/15 sec audio recording of me singing the chorus of Rooster. Could you give me a contact please? It would be great if you would listen to it

you should get in contact with brendan maier who fronts an alice in chains tribute band and in some ways and moments sounds identical or very similar to layne staley, he'd be worth trying to get on the channel for an interview to see how he does things! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDYi4aBZ8iFgJo
