Best vocal coach! Hands down. Chris Cornell is my biggest inspiration in song writing and singing. I find your unorthodox way of explaining and teaching to be way easier to pick up on. Who needs to know the science of their vocal chords when you can just achieve the desired result by scaring your neighbors and sounding like a dying cat. 10/10

Currently writing in a two piece and vocals as well as lyrics are our biggest hangup currently and I think you just handled 50% of that problem. Thanks my friend. Yep, bang on. He uses a total different technique and you're a lot closer than other vocal coaches on here. I've been doing very similar for awhile now. If be interested if Chris stumbled across this technique or if he just sang that way. Easiest way to hit the higher notes, with distortion, but with that self preservation too.

I recently have had a trip with my voice; I discovered, something like two months ago, how to do mid/high pitched screaming without grating my vocal chords and not getting hurt, which led to me being able to control my diaphragm much better. So I started my discovery voyage into the world of singing without *sounding like a dying cat* and I've started hitting some high notes, but I still need some singing lessons to get stability. Hell, that was blog if I ever seen one. Nice video man, keep up the good work!

Oh, my goodness! We thought we were the only ones who did this!!!!!!! Me and my sister do cat noises to warm up. One of the reasons why I joined your channel, was because I was looking for warm ups to add to my routine. I’m just in shock, because we have a cat that loves it when we hit whatever note she hits. She actually meows more when we do that. We’ve noticed that it made that part of the voice that can’t be accessed with just a warm up like Ye Yaye Yo Ya with the five tone scale up and down. Anyway, we love how you do this! Keep it up!!!! BTW, we’re a little old school, so not sure who Chris Cornell is. You sound very young. But good stuff. I also loved the one where you were talking, and using pitch with your talking voice. Really great teaching, man.

It took me three years of practice, in my truck, to go from meh to being able to sing a ton of my favorite songs well (Audioslave/old Chris stuff included)... Learn breath control, how to use your false cords, and learn to sing in all sorts of different styles, take what works for you from the KZbin voice lesson banquet, push your limit without straining too hard (passing out is a possibility, cord damage too), learn to relax your face... These are the things that helped me most...

You’re exactly right! This was the video that solidified the direction the channel was going to take. I have been teaching voice and guitar for a long time, but initially wasn’t sure how my methods would translate online because of the experiential, introspective nature of how I teach and engage with my voice. I discovered this too, but it doesn't have a name. I use it in chesty sounds, with the dying cat sound as a foundation for full voice practiced by itself. We really need to name this thing. In 1992, he sounded falsettoey and clean. He was seeing David Kyle for lessons. In 1995, he sounded chestier and distorted. He was using a different technique from Susan Carr. Same goes for Layne Staley.

A great one, by Chris, as always :D In my very rough and brief vocal training so far, I have tried approaching several singing styles, like Ronnie James Dio, Geoff Tate, Warrel Dane, and also Chris Cornel, and one thing that helped me deconstruct their voice was to begin by basically making fun of them, like imitating a very exaggerated caricature version of them (like the "dying cat" analogy for Chris Cornel, which btw really worked for me :D). This is of course not how to actually sing a Dio or Nevermore song in public, unless you are looking for some very angry derogatory comments. However, it has been helpful to establish how singing like them "feels" and be able to reflect and work towards it using actual singing technique.
@chriswenger57975 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great video! As a male singer, I found this cat technique very useful. I’m a music teacher (guitar, ukulele, mandolin, voice), and sometimes have a hard time teaching females to sing, since I need to use so much falsetto to put it in their range. Chris Cornell was apparently plagued with voice problems (nodes on his vocal chords) because of the way he sang. And it's true...your "studio" voice can be full-on but it doesn't surprise me that Chris employed "vocal saving" techniques live. Most singers who've been around more than a decade seem to do this (Peter Gabriel, Sting etc). A little disappointing in-concert but, like you've said: There's no way you could sing for 3 hours with your "studio" voice, night after night. I wish I could sing like Chris Cornell but some of us were born as basses or baritones...not tenors. Thanks for the great vid all the same! :)
