This Video is awesome! Ive been singing for practically my whole life and i was always listening to rock or metal, so i tried to sing like my idols do I went through these 3 steps, in the exact same way he did, learning how to Scream and shout So for everyone who is interested in screaming, shouting, or just roughing up your voice, THIS is the way to go.

Can I just say that, unironically, I absolutely love how stupid this sounds. A lot of singers are afraid to sound stupid and get super self conscious about their voice, but doing the stuff that sounds silly or goofy like you are at the beginning is HUGE. Lots of guitar exercises are essentially just noises very rarely sound musical, but they make you a better player. It's something that vocalists tend to shy away from.

Same, until I found some kind of way of moving slightly and finding the false vocal chords. One hundred percent had to do with support muscles. Without them, you're trying to support it all on the delicate muscles and cartilage in your neck/throat, and they're just not built for that. It wasn't the healthiest way, but my first big step towards doing it well actually involved a little clenching. I've learned to relax that since, but it definitely put me on the path to finding the RIGHT muscles to use. Prior to, I'd always end up in coughing fits, sore throat for a day or two, raspier voice. Now, every once in a while I'll feel it a little (tea fixes it in minutes), but generally I can sing along to an album or three and you'd never know (nor would I, really). Literally full metalcore albums with nothing but growling and screaming. The BIG thing to remember is that the volume you hear on stage or on a record has a level of production on top of it. Trying to emulate the INTENSITY without amplification is also a recipe for disaster. I know it's not metal, but Dave Grohl is said to be an incredibly quiet singer in person, but fantastic sound engineers can fix that in a second. A lot of people try to sing over music they're listening to and trying to hear themselves, it's a losing battle and reinforces bad habits. Do it at a volume that's comfortable for YOU, not a volume that will let you hear it over your headphones or whatever. It's like he said at the start, if you're just trying to copy what someone else is doing, you're going to hurt yourself. It requires legit technique to do well. Videos are great, but it's absolutely possible to sort of figure it out on your own. Just... if it hurts or feels different, stop, you're doing it wrong.

I am pretty stuck right now. I'm in a grunge band with a good mix of melodic and heavy songs, we've been going 4 years. Since the big covid break we all had, I've found it incredibly hard to scream at all (where it's intended/needed) and find my voice just dries up instantly when I try to scream. I couldn't even tell you what my technique was before covid as I self-taught from the age of 9, listening to a lot of nu-metal, so imitated that and had no issues. When I started listening to punk rock and other genres, I just kind of imitated that too and it worked up until covid, but since that big break of no shows, I've had issues trying to dial it back in after doing it for YEARS. I'm currently tracking vocals for our 2nd EP and it's got to the point where I'm actually afraid to attempt any of the screaming passages in the songs on the EP, because I know how it's going to go. I tried a couple of passes and it's the same thing - my voice just instantly dries up, chokes out and sounds weak. I'm going to attempt this method after a rest day tomorrow and hope that it re-trains my voice in some way. To anyone who had the patience to read this, sorry for the essay. There's nothing worse than feeling you can't deliver so I just needed to vent amongst some like-minded people.

Thank you for these videos, man. I swear to God if I see Ken Tamplin’s face again, I’m going smash my own vocal box. Please keep this going - I’ve played guitar mostly for a good bit of time, and I’m now really taking my singing seriously (Finally). This is what I need as a rock musician. 🤙

Sanjay Menon I noticed he does the same runs when he’s demonstrating things. He uses his top 2 students as proof of his method. I have searched KZbin to find actual students that posted videos of progress and it’s not anything that creates an evidentiary basis peaking my desire to go that route. His marketing is on point. I’m not saying he’s not a good singer. But I have watched A LOT of his video content and after a while I realized (in my opinion, of course) that he seems to be a real car salesman shopping around a product that he never really tells you about unless you buy 15 different programs (exaggeration, of course) - I’m not hating on the guy. And I’m not saying he isn’t talented and you can’t learn from him. I’ve just never seen evidence in the way of the casual student that would legitimize his instruction. With Chris and a lot of other KZbin vocal coaches, they have products, but they also teach in detail tips and techniques that, frankly, I just never have seen Ken willing to go in depth with. He is very accessible. And kind. I have briefly talked with him a few years back on fb. So again, I’m not talking badly about him. Just giving my own opinion.

I've just realized a few days ago that I have a good singing voice, and I'm delving deeper into getting my aggressive vox down pat without killing my throat. I'm covering Machine Head and Trivium(closest match to what I've got going so far) to get it exactly where I want, I've made a couple throw away tracks as references, and I've been watching these videos. Which have been a huge help! I'm starting to realize that you can't FULLY replicate another vocalists sound and style, but you can replicate their techniques and overall tone. Which I can take and turn into my own. I'm getting better day by day and I've been watching these videos like clockwork on my days off, going to my father's studio, and replicating all the techniques you've provided. I really appreciate the help man.

I love informative videos like this because this is the same technique I taught myself mostly to yell in a ridiculous way and not always be loud. It opened up many ways to vocalize, speak, and stuff. A few guys at work got through my shyness and have me demonstrate some vocalization. It’s great fun, and to do it right I agree it needs to be fun to self-depreciate to become skilled.

A lot of times, when i hadn't time for practicing, i always forget how to scream, but this method helped me to tie all things together, and now i can sing how i want and what i want

AAAH YOUR FOCUS ON THE VOCAL BREAK WAS SO VALIDATING FOR ME I've been naively playing around with subharmonic bass, fry screams, throat singing (similar to what you describe as the Cookie Monster sound here), and other sort of gimmicky and/or singing-adjacent sounds basically since quarantine started. And one of the things attempted to do is ‘live in the space of a vocal crack’, that is sing but never leave the very center of my break. That itself is a little bit painful, and not directly useful for anything except very realistic imitations of a screeching cat. Playing around this week for the first time seriously trying to sing with distortion, I noticed that when it sounded right, one of the things I heard/felt was the same as doing the cat screech thing. And I don't have a good vocabulary for it, but I had this conviction that somehow this was related to one of my vocal breaks, the same one that I mess with when I make the cat screeching sounds. (Subharmonic bass is the same way, but the break you're exploring there is between chest voice and fry, instead of some later/higher break.) Anyway thank you very much for this very clear and detailed explanation of what's going on in this cluster of related singing (and para-singing?) techniques!!
