Hes one of the first that ive seen who actually really seems to appreciate the position hes been put in and wants to repay the community by helping out with that he can. Most people in his position would charge for most of the things hes done like the camera down the throat video or this video. Also unfortunately this type of music doesn't seem to have many vocalist that seem to be as outgoing as will so we got lucky with how outgoing and appreciative he seems to be and also humble and not money hungry. Its the best combo we could've hoped for.

There is a culturally significant movement happening here: the vocals of this music style are starting to create awe and curiosity in people. So now the technical skill of this is being investigated-which means it is respected, and not just by practitioners or fans-but it’s starting to catch the attention of the average person. This is really really good for metal! Look at the explosion of technical skill on all instruments and vocals lately… we are entering a great time to love metal.

I was thinking the exact same thing as I was watching this, the metal growl is becoming more accepted in the mainstream, back in ‘the day’ only hardcore metal heads couldn’t handle it. Exciting to see the progression.
@Confusion7182

I hadn't thought of it that way before. I don't sing or anything, but it's fascinating to watch people make weird noises and be nerdy and passionate about it.
@corrob
@corrob Жыл бұрын
@icankillbugs it helps bring more attention and acceptability to more extreme forms of musicianship. more people who used to think metal was just power chords and talentless screams, now see that metal has complex structures, and the vocals are actually a skill and not just noise. musicians that are exceptional at their instrument are seeing that metal is the most diverse genre of music, be it a guitarist looking to challenge themselves, or even a full on classical strings musician can find a place in a symphonic black metal band. more people "getting it" means more future musicians in the genre, that would have never given metal a chance before.
@corrob
@corrob Жыл бұрын
@icankillbugs not since Cannibal Corpse has there been a death metal band that has tickled the mainstream ears, and Lorna have created music which many, many, people that would have never given such an extreme form of music a chance, are listening, and liking, or at least understanding its real musicianship. that just helps the entire scope of the genre (metal)
@corrob
@corrob Жыл бұрын
@icankillbugs just like Cannibal, Lorna has brought many new ears to an extreme metal style, which helps the entire scene, i just went to a Lorna Shore concert a couple weeks ago, im not in a huge city, and it was sold out, packed house, they are helping the scene grow by bringing in more people, that wouldnt have listened to such heavy music before. just like Cannibal Corpse did way back when.

It becomes 2nd nature after a while. Trust me you got it. Also. That mongolian throat singing effect your getting is caused by to much use of the throat. This is exactly what happened to me. Relax your throat a little and “pull away” and you’ll get your scream. Everything you’re doing is technically right. Just gotta relax more. Push more with the diaphragm.

I loooove when Vocalists vary their frequencies and tones. Not arbitrarily but matching what the song and/or lyrics require. The 1st time I heard a good example of this was Peter Tagtgrens vocals in Bloodbath, Nightmares made Flesh. As he also mixed in these ascending and descending piercing screams along w the varied growls. Highly recommend.

I had the same problem for 2-3 years. And suddenly one day out of nowhere I figured it out. It sounded like shit at first but now I have a very solid fry scream. The problem is I can barely sing through an entire song because my voice wears out. I suggest trying to learn fry. The way I do it is tightening my abdominal muscles and really constricting my throat (without pain) and then pushing air combined with head voice through that and that's how I get distortion.

As an elite athlete, I’m always looking for how things might apply across discipline. The idea of really warming up makes a lot of sense to me. Runners who are new just tend to go out and run. In reality you need at least a little warmup to make sure your muscles are ready to go! Similar to what Will was saying. There’s also a balance between pushing too hard and not pushing enough. Too hard and your injured. Not hard enough and you don’t get results- again, similar to what Will was saying. Lastly, I love all the nuanced movements and placements to give a bit of diversity in the mix. Just like running- when you know how to move well (doing drills) you can love differently on different terrain to make things easier/harder. I also love Chris, your enthusiasm and willingness to be a student. So cool!! I’ll be signing up as I’m slowly dipping into metal vocals. Thanks for teaching Will and Chris!

The cupping of the ear reminds me of how a dj has the second channel that he’s going to switch to going in one ear and listening to the set without a headphone in the other ear. They’re using 1 headphone to prep the next track and they’re using the other ear to hear exactly what the audience is getting in the moment

I think the tongue is basically enhancing overtones basically making it sound like two screams. It doubles up and gets so phat instead of one voice trying to add distortion

Actually it IS two screams. Will is able to layer fry and false chord screams over each other, that creates that higher tone coming in the more he constricts. Called hybrid screaming

I don’t think I can even begin to comprehend how DIFFICULT it is to do an hour long show, switching from highs and lows, to all these other techniques. I wonder if it feels like a full upper body workout after a show for Will?

Practice makes possible. :) it’s amazing how effortless it looks when will is doing all of this, especially over longer periods of time. He’s quick to point out that he is where is because of consistent practice!

I love how people say this isn't singing.....it's as hard to learn to sing this way as it is to sing any other style of vocals.
