The harmonization you are hearing in Corey's voice is trick in the music industry called reverb. It is where they put timing delay so it sounds like it is layered. He uses it a lot but is very pronounced in this song

The back up vocals are Corey. Pretty much all back ups are Corey just layered. The drums sound different since this is the first album with jay. Nice reaction!

My interpretation of the song is someone who has had enough with life and wants to kill themselves but is afraid of coming back because they dont want to deal with life anymore. "But you can't break my heart. As long as I can be myself, I'll never fall apart." That part says that they have some self confidence left but "And you can't take me in. If I'm not broken, break me down," is them saying that they dont want this confidence and asking for someone to break it

This may have nothing to do with the song, but I picture an older hospital at night...raining, flickering lights. Two patients, one room. One young man who attempted suicide...but was more of a "cry for help". The other bed is an old man, he is obviously dying. The young kid whines and complains like his life is so awful. The old man tired of his pathetic whining. The old man asks to trade places. The kid thinks he is joking so he says sure. "All you have to do is close your eyes..." The old man is DEATH. "Enjoy the fall..." The young man finds this out too late and has to carry out his bidding as DEATH. "My cities will never sleep again...." He'll never have true peace. "The only thing deeper than my last breath....I've comeback from the dead." He has been born and died so many times that he just repeats the process of the old man. That's just me. I'm stoned too.....

It's actually the band grieving Paul Gray. And Corey singing about wanting to be broken down, isn't because he doesn't want confidence or anything like that. It's him saying he needs someone...just in general needs someone....but can't find that someone because his walls are up and he doesn't trust people to care the way he needs them to

Love this song. Clean vocals are always just Corey harmonising with himself with another track layered over it. The two percussionists, Chris and Clown only do harsh vocals. But I have seen Chris do clean backing vocals on dead memories live but pretty sure that’s the only exception.
