I really like the Japanese Starsaber as just an unambiguous good guy. Like a transformers super hero that leans into it. Kinda wish Starsaber had some cred here in the West.

Trust me among certain fans he certainly does. Maybe not in the main Transformers fandom but in the mecha fandom which covers all giant robots most of us love Star Saber. He's among my favourite Transformers and I still want to own his Masterpiece version and the original version of the toy at some point. Will probably cost a fair bit but it'll be so worth it! :D

This goes deeper in to Authran Legend and the fact that Excalibur is really two two swords. The sword in the Stone and The Sword of the Lake. One is a right to rule, the other is a magic sword of great power. This might bolster your thesis on Authran legend and Transformers Lore. TL,DR: I have no clue, there is a sword called cyber caliber. It might support your thesis.

He's more known in the mecha community rather than the Transformers community, which is abit odd. Probably because alot of us have seen other Japanese mecha shows so we'd naturally know about the Japanese Transformers shows. Most of us know Star Saber and he's pretty well loved thats for sure :)

The problem with IDW Star Saber is, it's very telling James never watched Victory or ever care enough to learn about him so he just wrote whatever. Which at that point, why even bother? If he did, he would know that one thing that makes Victory Star Saber stands out is the fact that he adopted a human child and becoming his father figure, the fact that he's adopting a life that live far shorter than himself, among other differences, that stuff just writing itself. Plus, robo dad jokes anyone? IDW doesn't even give us Dadimus Prime, and now they ruined Dad Saber chance as well.

That is a good idea, but maybe also make him appear in a age later than Optimus. After all, Star Saber's almighty power comes partly from Cybertron technology development. I personally want to see a future incarnation of Star Saber that’s a blend of both his Victory and IDW counterparts. A courageous and heroic figure who is also very religious (ex. Views Optimus Prime as a demigod, sees the Great War as some kind of holy crusade, etc.). As an added bonus, he wields the Star Saber sword from which he shares a name with, probably entrusted to him by Optimus or somebody else for safeguarding.

A bit more about IDW Star Saber. He was a former member of the Circle of Light, who fell out with them when his fanatical personality reemerged, so Drift, who was raised by the Circle, was very familiar with stories about him. Upon his defection, Star Saber killed Dai Atlas and then went on to become the hired muscle of the traitorous Autobot Getaway during his Lost Light mutiny. Even after he slew him, Cyclonus prayed for Star Saber, hoping Primus would forgive his sins in the afterlife.

How interesting would it be if The legend of the Star Saber (the weapon) was known, but the details were muddied in history, erroneously thinking that the Weapon was only able to be wielded by a great warrior (such as a Prime). The fact that only a Prime could wield it would give credit to it, but the truth is that it was the blade of a warrior NAMED Star Saber, who was the only one who could unlock it's true 100% power.

Remember those Evolutions figures from Power of the Primes? Optimus, Rodimus, and Primal? I'm surprised they didn't use that format to also make a Star Saber since that was basically his original figure's gimmick. Sure he lost the popular vote but, it still would've been cool to make him nonetheless. I feel like the thing holding the Star Saber character back in the west is that he hasn't appeared in any western cartoon, and I think they could reconcile the character with the sword by saying that Star Saber the bot took his name from the legendary weapon of Prima, kinda like if someone went around calling themselves Excalibur.

James Roberts was basically just recycling ideas from his old fanfic from the 90s. Back then it was sort of acceptable, since Japanese G1 fiction was _incredibly_ obscure, and internet was in it's wilderness years so it wasn't a very reliable source of information either, but by the time he was introduced into IDW, that excuse didn't really fly.

This might be my religious upbringing speaking, but I can see him being some religious knight and a strong heroic leader. Picture this: an Autobit that was a valiant crusader king: a Kind and Strong Paladin that sought and swore to protect the wronged and weak from evildoers; bringing justice and peace wherever he went. A hero that swore himself to Optimus not just because he was a Prime, but because he saw true good in him and would happily fight alongside him. If you're an Arthurian of any kind, think of combining King Arthur, Galahad, Sir Bors and Gawain. Y'know, instead of being some genocide-happy crusader that sought to destroy those ge found impure

My HeadCanon: The Star Saber was a Legendary Weapon of the Primes that only a Bot with a Righteous spirit and strong sense of Honor can wield it. after the War of the Primes, Alpha Trion hid it on a far away world because he deemed it too powerful for any normal Sentient being to have and Believed that Only a Prime should wield it. Star Saber Became a Supreme Commander and lead of team of Autobots, After Failing to Save a town on Earth from the Decepticons the towns only survivor a Child named Jan Minakaze and Star Saber took it Opon himself to Raise Jan as his Adopted Son, years later a rookie powerhouse Transformer, Victory Leo joined Star Saber team at the request of Optimus Prime. I'd quite like to see a new take on G1 where Starsaber is one of the Autobot Leaders right from the beginning, rising to Supreme Commander in roughly the same chronology as the Japanese series, after the position has been held by various other Leaders. The arc could culminate with all of the Leaders returning to lead the Autobots together as a revived modern Council of Primes.(akin to the original 13 Primes)

What a fascinating history! I love these videos. My first time hearing the name was in Armada, but the TF Prime Star Saber remains my favorite. I love the design and the effects the show used when it was being wielded were always a visual treat. We never got a really good Prime Star Saber toy weapon, but luckily Third Parties exist. I would love someone to make a life (well, human) size replica.

I guess that Hasbro deemed Star Saber was too japanese for western audiences, he is practically the fusion of a Transformer, a Gundam and a super robot. If I worked as writer for Hasbro I would explain that in the japanese continuity the Star Saber became sentient due to the influence of Matrix of Leadership and became a transformer. That would explain why he is one of the few autobots able to compete to compete with Optimus in heroism and leadership and why he is so powerful. This theory also explain why Star Saber doesn't exist in other continuities.

Well, great idea, a couple problem tho, it is kinda established in Ask Vector Prime that Star Saber is not an uncommon entity through out multiverse, but it IS uncommon for him to be the leader. The reason he is so powerful is really only because he is a brain master, and he has a battle platform that aids him. Oh and he probably did train a lot. The bigger problem is that Star Saber was there at end of golden age, which makes when he was awakened by Matrix of Leadership which, oddly enough, not Vector Sigma, and contracting his Brainmaster origin which were an autobot technology created to increase relationship between Mini and Macro? was the planets name?, basically, that is a whole lot of hassle and retcons you will have to deal with, I suggest reading more on it before trying to do anything. Also, Star Saber WAS absolutely a super robot. Masterforce and Victory essentially is what the Brave Robot series was before the Brave Robot series even existed. The company did own gundam so the correlation was very easy to find. Star Saber is the father to Ex-Kaiser all the way to GaoGaiGar, which fathered good shit like Gurren Lagann today. Super Robot FTW.

In Mexico we got the mexican dubbed version of Transformers V on public TV. One of the last media i watched about transformers before Beastwars. So for me Starsaber and Victory Leo were very chersished characters. I can't believe how much they are ignored and forgotten in western media.

What about a backstory like… that he used to be a traveling super hero like figure that went around saving people along with Death saurus. But obviously, they couldn’t save everyone and that weight slowly broke them causing them to split while warping their mindsets. Star Saber could become a sort of “blade of justice”. He wouldn’t be named Star Saber by birth but become Star Saber because people start calling him by the name of “star saber” based on the legendary sword with him embracing the moniker, changing his name to Star Saber and becoming a sort of tool of justice slaying people who are deemed evil with no remorse even though he doesn’t like killing. Death saurus instead becomes pessimistic and nihilistic, wanting to destroy everything because he believes the universe is cruel due to only being able to see those parts due to travelling to those horrid places with Star Saber before they split. Becoming a sort of “messiah of evil” cultivating dark thoughts. And have him meet Jun by trying to save a city of humans but fail miserably, with only Jun as the sole survivor and Star Saber vowing to protect and raise this child as penance for failing. Slowly returning his kinder, less machine like nature by raising Jun and becoming the man he used to be. Turning the name “Star Saber” from the image of an executioner of justice to a hero to all once more. Sorry for rambling on like that, it sorta spiraled out of control.

Probably in the minority here, but I am all for Transformers adopting kids. I just like slice of life moments and I feel like it can be done well when the family unit are very different species. I can just imagine a jet landing at the local Walmart to pick up groceries.

I have my own take on Star Saber that I'd like to submit. The Star Saber sword was, as always, a weapon that existed since the era of the original 13 Primes, forged in the fires of a neutron star to help the 13 Primes in an event called the 'Prime wars' where the 13 battled the endless hordes and heralds of Unicron. After the Primes won the war, The Star Saber had gained sentience and an insatiable lust for blood, even going so far as to possess Megatronus Prime and force him to slaughter the other Primes with the sword due to the simple fact that the Star Saber craved blood on its blade. After this event, known as 'The Prime Massacre', Megatronus had sealed the sword away in a cavern of Energon and later went into exile out of regret for what he had unwillingly done, branding himself 'The Fallen'. The Sword, over countless millennia, had made itself a Tomb/Shrine to lay in wait for another wielder, though obtaining the sword wouldn't be that easy, for the Star Saber sword had manifested a Guardian to test any future wielder, the guardian? Star Saber the bot. A being made of pire crystalline Energon and an extension of the Sword's own consciousness

Solus Prime, and Onyx Prime, so including Megatronus, only 3 primes made it to the modern day.... well, technically 4 primes because of the enigmatic 13th prime, while his body perished, his spirit persisted. And in the Golden Age of Cybertron, much like TF One, a Young Orion Pax nearly died at the hands of D-16/Megatron. And Orion was saved by the spirit of the 13th, who possessed him relit his spark, and gave the reborn Orion and himself a new name: Optimus Prime. And the rest is history. And meanwhile with the Star Saber, after the war ended, it was discovered by Ratchet, Perceptor and Brainstorm of all bots

I remember a time in which I was introduced to the Star Saber as a basic little Mini-Con sword. Heck, that Mini-Con team was even my very first addition to the Armada collection, as I recall. How naive I was to not know that Star Saber originally started off as a noble sword wielding Autobot leader. I feel so ashamed... Oh well, my knowledge of the character/sword has improved nowadays, and this Basics Episode has really educated me some more about him. ☺ Also, I personally don't like what IDW did to the character, making the loveable Autobot leader a cruel, vicious dictator, with absolutely no remorse for innocent bots such as poor Dai Atlas. That just doesn't feel right to me. 😖 Yeah, I'll gladly stick with his portrayal in Victory, which I honestly prefer. 👍 And, if you ask me; Had I'd known about that "New Prime" fan poll much sooner, I definitely would've picked Star Saber. I mean, come on! Given that the Power of the Primes Leader Class figures consisted of medium sized robots combining with their vehicle trailers to form their bigger "evolution" forms, imagine how that would've looked for a modernised Star Saber. I dare say the figures would've flown right off the shelves! But no, I guess Optimus Primal won a fair victory over him, and that "evolution" Optimal Optimus IS fairly nice... But still, if you ask me, Star Saber definitely would've proved a far greater victory! 😄 Pun intended. X3

I know this is a three year old video by this point, but the Star Saber to me is synonymous with childhood. I still have yet to see Victory, but I'm a huge fan of the Unicron Trilogy. Actually, I got the normal Star Saber toy sword for my birthday one year, and I absolutely *loved* it. I still do, tbh. You could shift the middle of the blade up and down to turn it into 'flight mode' or 'blade mode', and it'd make different sounds depending on which mode it was in. The blades were made of what I think was hard silicon, so even then it was soft and wouldn't really hurt anyone, even if a kid swung it pretty hard. Which leads to me actually getting in trouble at school for bringing it to recess to show it off to my friends, who proceeded to not give a fuck about the 'weird autistic 'girl'' with the cool robot sword, and I got in trouble because my teachers saw it as an actual weapon with it in Blade Mode. ...But they were alright with the blades slotted back in Flight Mode, even though it still looked and sounded like a cartoon sword?? Either way, it's still one of my favorite toys from my childhood.

I have fond memories of saving up literal pennies to go and get the Air Assault Team and the Dark Saber to go with my Armada Galvatron. Until just last year I only had Sonar for the Air Defense Team because he'd come with a special VHS tape of the first few episodes of the Armada show and I was loathe to go get a duplicate of him by buying the whole team. I used to use his hilt with a bizarrely compatible green blade which came from a KO dino robo for my own Star Saber.
