Just a comment on Training and Preparing. For instance the upcoming Peaks Challenge in March. Alot of us are doing a bit of both, preparing to ride faster than we ever thought. And training to do the distance. Where you two guys can get away with very little and use sheer natural ability. The vast majority are doing distance over and above what you would ever think of. Also doing the pun VERTS. Its all about klm in the bank for us. We are not all gifted with 400w FTP. And can do 4,5wkg up Hotham. So you need to acknowledge the gulf between yourselves and the rest who are going to be out there for the full 12/13hrs. Personally this is my 2nd attempt after 172klm in oven heat last year. I aim to finish this year, I know I can ride the distance, power is my achilles heel. At 75yo not suprising but I am going to give it a bloody good go..

As someone preparing for Peaks I really enjoyed the training vs prepping chat. I'm currently indoors after a car dooring incident which lead to concussion and broken rib - lucky not to have had more injuries....anyway I am encouraged to hear my indoor training is beneficial. I have been told by a very experienced and very successful national champion level rider that it's all about climbing efforts. I definitely agree that getting used to long non stop riding is crucial and so is having an event day plan! More of this type of discussion please - Jesse has a way of cutting through the BS
@anemlachhomebrewing36908 сағат бұрын
Sorry to learn of your incident, best regards for a full recovery. I too collided with a car early Oct, busted AC joint amongst other shoulder injuries, and also training for my first peaks. Following the Bicycle Network intermediate plan and all but one ride has been indoors on Zwift. The ride outside was the weekend before last, and despite pseudo climbing on the trainer, including ADZ and Ven Top, I smashed some local circa 15 min climbs and got new PRs I set several years ago. I felt strong the entire 3.5hrs group ride, varying abilities, so not pushing myself too hard but then still had enough in the bank for an hour and a half on the trainer as soon as I got home. Been worried the indoor training wouldn’t be enough, but the weekend rides are min 4hrs continuous pedalling against resistance so I’m starting to feel more confident. I’d say majority of my remaining training will be indoors with some “preparation” rides on weekends. Good look at Peaks.

I think everyone miss understands pressure for different volumes. A larger volume tire with the same pressure as a smaller volume tire is significantly harder. That’s why the 32 was faster on a smooth drum. Using Boyles Law to calculate the differences between sizes, a 32mm tire at 120psi is equivalent to running a 25mm tire at 195psi. A 28mm equivalent would be 156psi. Also the “recommended pressures” used in the size comparison tests are incorrect always favoring the larger volume tire. Use Boyles Law to fix those recommended pressures and I bet all the gp5000 tires in that test would roll identical. For anyone interested in real world riding pressures, a 28mm tire at 72psi is equivalent to a 25mm @90psi, a 30mm @62psi and a 32mm @55psi
@piltrid12 күн бұрын
"We feel the ultimate test is adjusting all tires to the same comfort level. When all tires are adjusted to the same comfort level, rolling resistance is nearly the same (0.2 watts max) for all sizes of the GP 5000." - Bicycle Rolling Resistance (Continental Grand Prix 5000 Comparison: 23, 25, 28, and 32 mm Compared). Its worth a read for anyone interested.
@butikitoo6403Күн бұрын
@@piltrid1 i believe the argument for larger tires, (which as a "gravel rider", i feel are valid), is that you can run them at lower pressure to improve comfort, ( and reduced fatigue), and as for improvements in rolling resistance, that comes into play as the "smoothness" of the riding surface. So riding at the same "comfort level" on a smooth surface (like a steel drum), offers little benefit (perhaps increased grip), but risks aerodynamic losses.
@kimlightningmcnultyКүн бұрын
I’m no expert, but I don’t think Boyles law applies It basically says that if you squeeze more gas into a smaller space at the same temperature, the pressure will go up, that’s not similar to what we’re doing when we inflate our tires at all. When you inflate your tires to a pressure, it’s an amount of four against the tire carcass compared to the outside atmosphere, less force on that carcass equals less pressure because of soft tire The purpose of a larger tire is to distribute the load of the system weight into more tire surface by using less pressure my experience is a 25 mil tire at 95 psi is a lot harder than a 28 mill tire at 75 psi
@LyfeisBykeКүн бұрын
Sram actually has an article about it on their website. Boyles law is what the sram tire pressure calculator is based off of. P1V1 = P2V2. But ya I agree, comfort level might not feel the same.
@lunam724917 сағат бұрын
your discussion is tech. nonsence....smaller narrow at high pressure is faster bike. the old days were 19mm @ 150psi, for comfort i use 23mm@ 95psi @ 700c, any fatter is slower regardless of psi, btw i dont blow out trust anything above 120psi..PV = nRT = boyles , is simply the ENERGY DERIVATION, NOT STIFFNESS = HOOKES LAW

Been riding an endurance bike doing Fondos, but started dipping my toe in short road races, crits (age grouper). I expected the SL8 to be fast, but to have significant issues with comfort and ride position. Yep, it's fast (i'm not btw), but the huge surprise is that it rides very smooth and is possibly more comfortable than my endurance bike using the same GP5000 S TR 30mm tires. I am having to do some neck strengthening due to the lower front end. Overall, I love this bike and I really tried to be a specialized hater. I used a continuous blood glucose monitor to train for the New York City Marathon. What I learned from wearing it is this: 1.) You want to fuel before the race, but you don't want to spike insulin. If you over fuel, you'll start the race in a glucose deficit. 2.) At my marathon pace, I need one gel every four miles to stay within in my target glucose range (60-90 grams of carbs an hour). However, this will change based on intensity. At half marathon pace, it's one gel every three miles (90 grams of carbs an hour). In triathlon I'm consuming 120-150 grams of carbs an hour. You could wear a CGM 2-3 times to have a baseline of how your body used glucose.

Congrats on another nice episode... I have been running 35 mm GP5000 AS TR tyres, at 40 to 50 psi, on the new Canyon Aeroad CFR for the past 6 weeks (yes, they fit!)... Way more comfortable but they definitely do not feel as fast as 28, 30 or 32 mm... I did one crit race with the 35 mm tyres and I felt less confident going around corners fast, maybe because you lose the feel of the road surface... Sprinting and acceleration out of corners was also not nearly as good--the All Season version of the GP5000s are significantly heavier than regular GP5000s... I will probably go back to 32 mm, even before the end of winter... The 35 mm will likely be good for my longer Audax and Ultra rides, especially when road surfaces are not so good. Finally, I am 100% using the 35 mm tyres in the Tour of Flanders Sportive in April 😉

My contradiction to your fondo training rant is for fondos with climbs over 20% where you are out the saddle yanking on the bars just to move forward requires training using similar climbs (like Fred whitton). Otherwise your arms simply collapse through lack of strength during the fondo.

I couldn’t agree more on your Peaks prep vs train. We have a Double Century every year end Nov in South Africa. Team time trial with 12 in a team and we usually start training July Aug. You are responsible in the week for your own training and every Sun we get together as a team and do the 100+ ride to prepare. We slowly ramp it up to 150 with climbs mixed in and a month before we do a 160km race as a team to set our final target for Nov to see where we are, team dynamics, etc.

Well, to Jesse's point: if it's not the same casing, then the comparison is really not that useful. If you go to Bicycle Rolling Resistance and check the difference that equally named tires in different casing versions regularly have, it's possible that a fair chunk of the 12 watts comes from that fact alone.

I just have to question Pirelli a little bit about those tyres. Remember these are the P-Zero _Race_ TLR. Who the hell has a _race_ bike that will take a 40mm tyre? Pirelli have a bunch of editions of the P-Zero including _Race 4S_ and _Road_ - you’d think one of those series would be more suited to a 40mm edition. Especially if they beefed it up and didn’t make it as supple as the other Race series tyres.

The 40c tires are slower on a 20min course (I guess this was the time). Some theorize that more rubber equals more confort (which david arthur confirmed it was more confortable) and more confort means more energy on the long run, thus more power. Unfortunately, for one to test such hypothesis, the test course would have to be... 100 miles. It is unpractical to perform such test. We can also not claim the theory is wrong. The new gravel zipp wheels are supposed to be made for 40c tires.

yep 28mm @ 60 psi are sleeping pillows for me!!😂😂🎉😂🎉 my fave 700cx23@100psi real streets

If a tour rider has complained that the teams bikes are too heavy . . you need lighter bikes or ones that hit the 6.8kg limit bang on. Don't think many do and anything over is uneccessarily heavy.

Oh and thanks for calling me young guy. At 47, that's the best compliment ever!

HAHA!!! We missed you at Heffron the other week, the entire breakaway was 40+ years of age 😁

Best climb prep I used to do was 90mins on the tops on a velodrome.

100% can be done, and i would argue it makes you stronger then just slopping up climbs.

As a type 1 - using a cgm is key to fuelling a ride. Alerts when bsl is going up or down really quickly and it’s changed how fuel, thus feel on longer rides.

6:10 I wouldn't recommend putting your phone in bib pockets, first thing to hit in a crash, don't ask me how I know😂

Cargo pocket is good for phone. Better than bib

Most country roads in the UK 🇬🇧 look like this… a wider tire is useful in these crap conditions!

I'd say it's a necessity........

Cargo bib shorts are very underrated! Once you try it, you never go back. Getting things in and out is a lot easier than reaching for your back

25mm tires and still faster than 30 on smooth roads, i wouldn't say comfort is a factor but speed is

I think more mechanical groupsets are coming, but they're not at all in y'all's space. I think we're gonna see CUES for road this year, and a bunch of indie component makers are working on mechanical groupsets for us hipster types. For example, Growtac has new friction-shifting brifters, and Rivendell is working on a rapid rise derailleur

Re: CGMs - I’ve noticed my blood glucose regulation on the bike is poor when I’m way overreached / overtrained. Lots of peaks up to 200 and dips below 80, and fueling strategies won’t fix it. When training is going well, blood glucose on the bike is stable to the point where I can’t draw any real conclusions about changes in fueling strategies.

Check the bottom of that bicycle rolling resistance article. When equalized for comfort via tire drop, the gp5000 tires of different widths perform about the same. 35 mil tire pumped up high will ride like an old 25. Waste of a wide tire to not run low pressure. Surprising comfort from 30mm on the low end of their pressure range.

I think the feeling of a wider tire feeling slower on crappy roads may be the greater amount of rebound in a larger tire. A larger tire at a lower tire pressure is going to deform more on impact and spring back more at slow speeds. I think that is the sensation that Chris is experiencing at the lower speeds.

I bought the 30mm Pirelli P zero TLR after some research because they seemed the best performance tire with decent wet grip and puncture protection. Impossible to get on a rim though... so switched them for the GP5000 S TR. Because we can actually buy them here :D

Those 40mm tyres would work great on the Surly CrossCheck. Massive speed improvement. Must get some.

You can walk into any Chemist Warehouse and buy an Abbot Freestyle CGM and get real-time Blood Glucose on the phone app. There's no pass thru to Wahoo as Supersapiens shut down at the beginning of 24. CGM is going over the counter in the USA this year wheras they were previously prescription only which is why they might think it will be big this year?
