How to fly cast in the wind - Fly Fishing Windy Conditions

Learn tips and techniques to fly casting in the wind and for fly fishing in windy conditions. Proper loop formation and casting direction make it possible to cast a fly into the wind with no need for double hauling or casting harder. Whether the wind is at your back or you are casting into the wind, you must adjust your technique to match the situation. Both scenarios mean you will be making weither a back cast or forward cast into the wind. Poor loop shape will prevent the line from straightening and cause most of the next stroke to be spent straightening the slack line.

If you do equipment videos, could you demonstrate (maybe 8wt) differences between rod "speeds"... medium fast, and fast... and the effects they might have on a non-pro fly caster. I realize that "speed" is somewhat subjective, and I'm not interested in brand names. Just some guidelines. Thanks!

Great idea. Thanks. Probably would not be able to demonstrate as I would need several rods of the same weight and different actions. I try to stay away from soft rods so I do not own any but I can certainly discuss the differences and maybe break out the antique fiberglass rod to show what slow or soft is like.

@8:30 Do you have your line marked for distances? It doesn’t look like you have 70ft. of line out, including the leader length.

Yes, I have 50 and 75ft marked on my lines so I can easily show students the distances.

What weight fly line would you suggest for a windy area like Jurassic lake ?

That depends on what size fish you are targeting, size of the flies, how far you need to cast, and your ability to cast well formed loops. A 5wt can be can be cast into a stiff wind with good loops as far as a 9wt with wide open loops. many anglers use heavier rods and line to compensate for less efficient loops.
