Seems like you can start with the configuration @14:13 ? as in, form a ring, then slide the two pieces of the other into the hole to get the placement @14:13 ? I hope not cuz that would make the puzzle a little easier to solve 😁

Imagine if you had four dimensional objects and pieces. The possibilities would be mind blowing. We cannot even comprehend of a 4-D object, let alone solve puzzles like these!!!
@Nitidus

@@Crazytesseract That's kind of a silly thing to imagine since it's the very nature of an added dimension to result in exponentially more possibilities... and as four-dimensional objects are impossible to grasp for humans, it's kind of useless also :D

Man that's a pretty puzzle. I was thinking along the same lines you were that the pieces must all be identical if you can interchange any of them, so the key is figuring out how to get them to fit together... But then the solution is so insane. The machining on those pieces must be incredible to get them all to slide against each other like that so smoothly.

It's amazing. The motion you want the solver to take dictates the path you carve in the metals. If you want two or more pieces to connect, that is. Two clues (from a humble mathematician who does not do hands-on puzzles often): 1. "One surprising motion" was in the title. This suggested to me in the beginning that you should handle all 4 pieces at once. It turned out this was correct. 2. The path carved in the metal pieces was indeed the path you were forced to create in your motions. Hope this helps in future puzzles.

In my early 20’s my father bought this one horse shoes puzzle with a ring in the middle. While he was purchasing it that I was trying to figure it out. Somehow that I solved it right in front of him w/o knowing that I solved it. He bought another puzzle at another place. Of course that I solved it,too. I really liked the 1st one that I kept on solving it and even put the ring back in place.
