This is another great method taught by Chris. Though, for anyone saying, it felt obvious that Chris was writing down the person's answer, I too felt that, but I have seen this done in a slightly different way that gets rid of that issue. Use the same force, but tell them you will get to that later (Or force a specific card and ask them to remember it for later. Then ask the first question, but ask them to "Think about it". ie, "Think of a 3 digit number", then write your prediction of it (You actually write the card you forced). Ask them for the number, and when they say it (i.e. 128), you can act kind of disappointed like you didn't write the correct answer. That way you have your "prediction" written BEFORE they announce their answer. Then ask the second question, again using the word think, "Think of a person's first name who is important to you"... You write your prediction while they think... You stare into their eyes, use all the mentalism patter, "Say it over and over in your mind", "Really concentrate on it", then you write down 128 (or whatever number they told you on the last question). Then ask them for the name. Again, feel free to look disappointed. Then you ask them to remember that card, or say you're going to make a prediction about the card they cut to. Then you simply write the name they said a moment ago. You now mix the cards a bit, and ask them for the number (going back to the "first question", then the name, then the card, all while showing your correct predictions. Just a thought on improving the method's timing. Thanks again Chris for being awesome! Even in a 2 year old video!
@briancherry80886 жыл бұрын
I think the timing works better if you say... "Think of a number. Now let me write down my prediction". It would help reinforce that one thing has ended and another has started. Otherwise it kind of feels like you are writing the answer from the last question before you ask the new one.
@rjbullock5 жыл бұрын
Oh, gee, do you think?
@TheDudeAbides-2475 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's a great trick and your tweak makes it even better. Tell the subject to think of a number, and look me in the eye while you have it locked in your brain. Then write down the prediction, which is the prior answer (or the card you peeked). Continue through the progression. On one of them, you can pretend to be experiencing a weak connection and ask them to concentrate a bit more, and then say it is better. Or have them touch your arm while they concentrate on their answer. This works well as a way to be flirtatious while doing the trick. The more involved they are in the process, the less they think about how the trick might work.
@josephsaeteurn91585 жыл бұрын
@@TheDudeAbides-247 *tell subject to think of a number * ...then how would you know what number to write down if he didn't say it out loud? are you banking on him thinking of a number and hoping he doesn't ask you i was thinking of number 99 but none of the prediction have 99?
@jason_v123454 жыл бұрын
The problem is that this particular card-force then becomes obvious.
@DL-kc8fc4 жыл бұрын
You are right that in the video submission, the trick is very untrustworthy and the boundaries between query and writing are blurred, which is easy for an average bright person to detect. It is also very unfortunate to perform this trick over Skype. Since I have been doing this trick since the last century, I had to change its concept so that it was as trustworthy as possible, ie that there was a clear line between action and guessing. Here's my guide: I do it with a deck of playing cards (I don't want to carry paper and a pencil), which I throw all over the table face down and spread both hands across the table or pile them up, etc. Before I play cards shuffled, I remembered the card from the bottom of the deck, which is not a problem when shuffling, and I remembered its position on the table. Suppose it was Spades 2. Then I invite the person to point me with a finger to the Spades 2. I will say that I am not only trying to guess the card shown, but that I know in advance which card he will point to (these are two mental tricks in one!). Of course, the person and I do not see the value of the selected card, such as a cross 10. If she accidentally points to my spades2, whose position I remember and which has been said, the trick ends with great success by guessing the selection). Let's go back. In my hand is a selected cross 10, which I do not show the person. I commend the person that this is interesting and that we will try again. So I invite her to point to cross 10 (I have it in my hand). Again, if she pointed to my two of spades, which are still somewhere on the table, the trick ends with great success, because I would have both a spades 2 and a 10 cross in my hand, which I will show and praise that the person has the ability to choose according to my prediction. Let's go back. I have a cross of 10 in my hand and I invite the person to point to a cross of 10, for example. He chooses a random card, perhaps a heart 9. Again, I wonder and praise ... and now I say that I will pick the third card myself and declare that I will choose a heart 9, but choose spades 2. Subsequently, I think about the cards and declare that it is not possible that the person would have such predictive selection skills. She forgets that the third choice wasn't her when you deal three cards (spades 2, cross 10, and heart 9). Success is great because it's about three combinations of maneuvers than just writing on a ticket, and it gives you the chance to make an immediate guess when a person accidentally picks your card in the first or second withdrawal, because the cards really are in my hand. This trick counts on plan "B" and is as trustworthy as possible.

Yes. It all hinges on the card, though. That's what makes it believable.
@Sivos9095 жыл бұрын
What makes it work is based on the fact it's a mentalist magic trick. What you're doing is messing around with their memory. You're not just writing down the answer, you're telling them what to remember as you do the trick. So like with the first card, he said he was writing down the prediction to question 1 making sure the guy remembers the first card is going to be the prediction to question 1. And then this is repeated. Mentalism is playing with the mind. No slight of hand or illusions. Just honest lying and manipulating.

Love this effect and principle. You can use it with a card trick as well. Shuffle the deck and show the spectators that everything is shuffled but you secretly look at the fourth from the bottom and remember it. Then tell a spectator to choose it (for instance 4 of clubs) and the card they actually pick is the ten of diamonds and then you tell the next spectator to take the ten of diamond and then they actually pick for instance ace of clubs then you say your going to pick it and pick the fourth card from the bottom. You can have as many cards chosen as you want. Ps like the new music

That's lot better than most reveals out there, but here's a question .. how do you do this, if the predictions are on a whiteboard and nobody has access to them? Personally I'd take this trick beyond anyone's understanding, i'd use flexible screens. In fact I think some magicians have already used them (never seen anyone reveal those tricks and by searching for those, i found this video). Then you don't have to write anything, you just need an assistant and a remote microphone, so your assistant can hear what people say and then write it remotely.

Little tip with this one. With the 'number', write the card then pretend to scribble it out. Have one of the cards have a scribble already. Ask them to think of a two digit number, pretend to write, then say 'actually think of a three digit number' while pretending to scribble. Then ask what the number they were thinking of was. On an off beat ask what the number they thought of was, and give a knowing smile. When you write the number of the pre scribbled card, write the two digit number OVER the scribble. Also, number the cards in their supposed order. So write 3 when you write the card at the beginning etc. A lot of this one comes down to acting and believability
@felixaubert73226 жыл бұрын
I actually figured it out as you did it! OMFG! I'm so proud of myself :O

another thing you can add is have the three blank cards numbered (1, 2, 3) and cover them with identical, removable numbers that don't match the actual numbers. So they could correlate in numerical order.

You could also ask the spectator to repeat the questions in the order of you making the predictions. That way it will start with the numbers first, then the name, and then you can say: "I also made a (last) prediction of what you card was" So in practice you could for example say: I made a prediction and then asked you to name a number (do you remember?), then you reveal it. Or you have them ask the following question/prediction so you can reveal it in order (number first, then name, lastly the card). That way they have no idea that you went with a different prediction setup.

Sticky notes can be used well if they happen to be around. I like that they are a common object, simply write a little lighter than you might press normally and once you've written the prediction fold the prediction up and then across because of the sticky nature it will remain folded until the reveal. You can even stick it to a table or wall so no one can mess with them. When you're ready to reveal you take them up so you can reveal them in order.

The way I adapted it is I would have the person pick any card > force the card to the top (I use a pinky break and a cut then a fake bridge shuffle) > Reassure them that the deck doesn't have any duplicates by showing them all except for the top card (then I would do a quick maneuver while I'm putting the cards back together and slip a very quick peek of the top card) > then the number prediction trick > then I tell them to think of any word (since names can easily be figured out if you know the person) > then I say "alright for this last prediction, I'm going to go through the cards and see if I can't tell which one is yours" then I write the word they said obviously and I never show them the top card > then I do the fancy reveal! Nice magic 101 tutorial. Lots of mentalism for me today with the new Banachek lecture (4-1/2 hours!). I love using the one ahead method. But it's one of those things one can't unlearn. I knew exactly what you were doing the entire trick, the criss-cross force and then the one ahead method. And being magic 101 I'm surprised how well this works, but most everybody out there hasn't studied a lick of magic so it still does work.

There is another trick you can do with the 1 ahead thing. You place all cards on the table facedown except 1 which you palmed or hidden somewhere and you tell them "do you believe you are a psychic or do you believe you are lucky" Ex. you hidden a ace of spaces in your hand. What you do now is you tell the spectator to pick 1 card out of the face down card that you think is the ace of spades. They choos a random card and they hand it to you. You peek at that card and tell them "oh you got it right" but dont show them. Since you peeked at the card they gave you, you use that for your next card they choose facedown. Ex. when you aced them to pick the card they thought was ace of spades, they picked king of hearts, you then ask them to "pick a card that you think is the king of hearts." which means at this point you have both ace of spades and king of hearts but the spectator thinks you only have 1 card which in reality you have 2 since you palmed one or hidden one. You can do this as many times you want. Once you decide to end it, you jut take the card they choose and hide that card and show the card you hidden in the beginning. Ex. you palmed/hidden ace of spades. You ask spectator to choose a card they think is the ace of spades. they dont know what they choose since its a facedown card however you do know what they choose since you look at it and say something along the lines of "wow" or "dang your good" or "you got it right". however you dont show them. you looked at the card they choose and saw it was a 3 of clubs. you then ask them to do it again. this time you tell them to choose the 3 of clubs. They pick one out and you do the same thing. This time you end it at the 3 of clubs. to do that you simply look at it and say you really are a a psychic or you really are lucky, you take out the ace of spades which you had hidden and you show that with the 3 of clubs while you hide their card that they choose when you asked them too find the 3 of clubs. Its pretty hard to explain but thats the gist of it. It only works once and usually only works with a friend. not a street magic or something that is done frequently cuz its pretty obvious if you do it more than once

I remember your old boss (Brad) teaching a card trick that uses this principle, it's the one where you make the spectator touch a card that you name from a pile of face down cards. It's a great way to use this principle, I still use it sometimes.

Great video Chris! I came to this channel just enjoying your performances, but I honestly am becoming interested in magic and mentalism from a casual perspective. I'm always looking for new hobbies and interests and Mr. Ramsay you have inspired me! Keep up the great work.

Another cool thing to do is write 3-on the first card, 1-on the second card, and 2-on the last card... This helps make it work even better, and tell them that you are writing it as well, only say 1 for 3, 2 for 1, and 3 for two.

This was so much fun. I'll share this with my son. He used to entertain the guys on the USS nimitz when he was in the navy with a magic show. This would be fun for him to add.
