As a chain wears, it develops tight spots. You can check it in one position and tension would be fine, rotate the wheel half a turn and it would be too tight. Therefore, this tool still needs to be positioned when the chain is at its tightest spot and you have to find that spot using your fingers. 🤷🏻
@MotoPhotoAdventures3 ай бұрын
Well it's not perfect. But we still think it's a helpful device. Most of the time you can visually locate the tighter spot in the chain by just rolling the bike forward.

The chain slack measurement is a range. When doing the first adjustment to then calibrate the tool do you go with the min. max or middle of the two. (Sorry long time BMW Shaft Drive guy now with a 2021 CB500X and a 2022 Rebel 1100 DCT).
@MotoPhotoAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim! Welcome to the world of chain-maintenance! 🙂 I always go with the middle of the two. That way if your measurements are off either direction, you have a cushion for the error.

Do you have to torque your axle nut or was that tight enough?
@MotoPhotoAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Mine worked great. But I do recommend using a torque wrench if you have it.
@TubeClift3 жыл бұрын
One fact I didn't see mentioned is that your chain slack will *change* as the suspension compresses. So you have to *calibrate* the device at exactly the same amount of suspension compression that you use to subsequently *check* the slack. The most repeatable state would seem to be with the bike on the centerstand and the suspension fully extended. Maybe you could mention this in the video?
@MotoPhotoAdventures3 жыл бұрын
HI Clift! You are absolutely correct. It is assumed that you would follow the manufacturer's guideline for checking your slack before you calibrate the device. For the CB500X, Honda recommends just resting the bike on its side-stand. Since most bikes don't come with center stands, this would make sense. But of course if your bike us unloaded when you calibrate the tool, you should be aware that it might be off a bit if you later check the slack with the bike fully loaded. :-) Thanks for the tip...good thing to keep in mind!

Cool tool but it is also a good practice to measure each side of the adjusters to insure each side of your axle is equidistant in the swing arm.

Hi Noel! I don't use any chain alignment tools other than the notches on the axle mount. But I'm glad you like the chain slack adjuster tool. It's been a nice product to help keep the chain correctly adjusted, and keep my fingers from getting greasy! :-)

I'd invest in the right socket for the rear axle bolt. Adjusting spanners are a great way to wreck your nuts (no pun intended ;-))

HAHA...great tip, mate! We actually have the correct spanner for the rear axle bolt. But it's tucked away for use "on the trail" and we were too lazy to get it out. Next time we'll make sure to use it! :-)

What I don’t get is the calibration ? You still have to “guess” the proper tension before calibrating the tool Anyone doing a review on this tool should show how to properly set the correct tension Does that make sense ?
@Jason_MotoPhotoAdventures2 жыл бұрын
No guessing involved. The correct tension is stated in the manual and is described in a distance of slack. Once that is measured with a tape, then the tool is calibrated to that and never has to be adjusted again. See this video where we show that. Thanks for the comment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaiYk2ePbpeiiLc

Your axle bolt was loose enough to take off with those tools!?!?!? I need a cheater bar for mine. Chain slack is probably the most annoying periodic maintenance item.
@MotoPhotoAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Some Guy! Thanks for watching. Although I did use these tools to loosen the axle bolt, the video just shows a quick shot of me loosening it after the initial "grunt work" was done. It did take a good bit of muscle power to get it going at first! :-) Same with the lock bolts on the chain adjustment. I initially "broke" the lock bolts free before the video clips started since the act of loosening these bolts was ancillary to the purpose of the video. By the way, I used to HATE checking my chain tension until I got this tool. It makes the job so much faster, cleaner, and easier.
