"What is your only comfort in life and in death?” For centuries, believers have learned the Christian faith beginning with that question. It’s the first article in the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. Why start there? Because death is our common fate. Unless Jesus returns first, we will all die. To find comfort in life, we must know how we can face death. Hope comes only in trusting the one who died to take the curse of death and who crushed the power of death by his resurrection. “Christ has been raised from the dead” (1 Cor 15:20). That is the only statement that can transform how we live each day and how we prepare for our earthly life to end.
The hope of the resurrection spurs us to sing. That’s why a group of songwriters from Getty Music wrote the modern hymn “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Like the Heidelberg Catechism that inspired it, this song is honest about death. There is no need to shrink back from mentioning death in our hymns, because we know the Living One who has conquered death forever. The Christian can sing hallelujah, because Christ assures us of our glorious future. Now and ever, we confess: “I am not my own, but belong-body and soul in life and in death-to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.”

I played this song at my sweet mom's funeral too. Such rich theology in this song. So much truth. I still can't listen to this without crying. I wouldn't wish her back earth side, but the grief is still so raw 2.5 years later. I close my eyes and envision those gone before us worshipping at the throne of Jesus. I played this song at my mom's funeral. We buried her on good Friday of this year. Christ is our only hope in life in death. This song is a balm to my grieving heart. Keith Getty told me at a conference that this song was based on the first question and answer of the Heidelberg Catechism which asks: "What is your only comfort in life and death?" The answer to "what comes apart from His command" is "the love of Christ in which we stand" -- in other words, it is not based on our response to his commands - God gives us certain things only when we obey -but His love is not one of those things - He loves us independent of our response .

We have included in our Thought for the day which our Church, St Stephens in London, issues every day during the lockdown. Yes, lets talk about death! Christians get ill and even die - but we approach death from a totally different perspective to that of the world. We can be free from fear. Why? Because we know that God has His hand on our lives. We remember that Jesus has gone through death and come out the other side. This means that we know our future is safe with the Lord in Heaven. We sing , Hallelujah!

You are exactly right Ian. If we are in Christ we do not fear death the same way the world does. Granted, we do mourn death as it’s not a natural condition, but a consequence of our Fall in Adam. However, as you mentioned, Christ conquered death, and we’re assured of our coming eternal presence with the Lord. Remember this when death nears for you and your brothers and sisters in Christ: The day you die, is the last day that you’ll ever sin against the good God that saved you!
