I have a different path. There is Dunning-Kruger effect. It says beginners usually overestimate their skills. When we start undermining ourselves (verifying our skills), it is a good moment to develop (if we do not stop doing it at all). Then we slowly become "experts" but never reaching beginner's "enthusiasm". I always wanted to make music. I've been doing it for decades. I know that creativity helps to get out the box. It is just a skill, not a talent. I like your channel. Greetings!

Hi Christiaan! Great to see you again! Thanks so much for your support of the channel back in the day, you were the first! Hope things are well on twitch and always like to hear your commentary on these kinds of videos

@ChristiaanvanHemert love your approach to teach an instrument. I went from typical pentatonic blues to already be able to play gypsy jazz rhythm and easy solos in half a year and taking it as a hobby! This is amazing all the rest you find on YT with the typical modes/scales/theory is just rubbish. No gypsy jazz legend learned that way, and neither should we as it is a longer path, that will make you less original at the end. Keep up with the great work! Loving it! PS: I particularly loved the video you made years ago when compared the two learning methods and threw John Scofiled in...

8:30 and also I think classical guitarists don't use thumb at all for fretting as you did 😄...btw classical guitars have wider neck usually and strings are more apart, so it might be also harder to fret 2 strings like that for gypsy jazz player 😁

True, and that's what she also said during the lesson....so I tried it on her guitar and it wasn't a problem. I have big hands though so your mileage may vary!

i think the major scale is just kind of incidental to the real value, which is to know every scale degree including b2 b3 b5 b6 b7 and then your always comfortable and never lost. not that you need to think about it that way, but if you do its very cozy
@ChristiaanvanHemert Жыл бұрын
You could learn that without learning the major scale though and it would probably be much quicker!

This was a great video. All Christians suggestions were important, good points. Mike is a diligent player, he has the ability to REALLY stick with something it looks like. After the DONNA LEE transcriptions learned, I think he will begin to see the language in a different way. I agree with you Christian about your thoughts on the DOING of the transcription, at least later on in his pursuit, but this, as painful as it is to do - transcribing note for note - it won't hurt. Christian your advice about Delaying the connecting lines is SO VALUABLE and important cause a student could waste time with not knowing this, ITS SO IMPORTANT for Jazz phrasing. And your advice about the Swinging, well thats the most important advice you've given him, he should start there. I'd LOVE to see this guy take a lesson with you, and see the after effects, which I KNOW will make him WAY BETTER even quicker. This guy could actually become a Gypsy Jazz player under your tutelage Christian, and that would make a really good series I think. Thx for the video.

I don't really care about the video you're reacting to, i'm just here for when you get sidetracked and say some interesting stuff tbh
@ChristiaanvanHemert Жыл бұрын
Haha, that's the point. That's why I watch reaction videos anyway. The original video is just there to give me a direction and initial momentum for my own thoughts!

Why do you Focus so much on imitating and or copying other's, why you may not play what you want as long it Sounds good, explore and inovate your own Style, Knowledge of the fretboard is very important and rhythm also, but hey! There only 12 notes, seven are in and 5 are out. With that knowledge and Aware of the keycentre you're pretty save in the beginning, and why no Dm7 what is wrong with that?, it has it own beauty! The Problem with the lickbased gypsyjazz players is they play (not Sound) the same licks and is meanwhile borring.
@pauls_guitartrip Жыл бұрын
I think you misspelled a keyword here. Christiaan is focused on intimidating others (with his knowledge and insights) not imitating. 😅 This fellow wanted to master jazz in 7 days. Unsurprisingly he totally failed in mastering. Still he made a great progress.

He's trying to bore you! so you will let your guard down. Don't fall for it! listen to every lick he does with intent as to not be caught off guard. Learn his licks, memorize them. Practice them every day. Or else he will get you!
