I’ve seen the show five times, witnessed Jak cry during this song in his final performance, and Christian’s taken on the role doing it so beautifully. It’s an emotional change of tone towards the end of Act I, and I love it. It brings tears to my eyes every time. Hester, who served our nation, we love you.

I saw the show in the theatre a few weeks ago, and this song (and Christian's performance) stopped the show cold. The entire audience was in tears, and just kept applauding and applauding. No shouts or whistles -just a long, steady applause that went on and on. In over forty years of theatergoing it was a standout moment I will never forget.
