I’ll never forget hearing this version first, having never heard Elliott smith. Hearing that first line “no bad dream fucker’s gonna boss me around.” It was one of the most rock n roll, cool things I’d ever heard. Torrented Smith’s whole discography after that and my jaw was on the floor as track after track no matter the album was unbelievably good. That was a long time ago now. Thanks for the introduction guys.

Isn't it something how certain songs can have so much meaning? Even if it's not the same meaning as the artist intended. I first came across this song while one of my life long friends was battling cancer. He lost the fight shortly after. Since then I've never been able to listen to this song without tears. "Christian Brothers" is a brand of brandy. "No bad dream f***er's gonna boss me around, Christian Brothers gonna take him down" means he's going to drink to deal with other people. I guess the song isn't just about drinking, it's more about being the outcast in a close-minded society.

SpunkySkunk347 Elliott Smith used 'the boss', 'the man', etc, as metaphors for addiction a lot in his music. That's all. This song was him saying "I don't want help, I know what I'm doing to myself". That's what makes his music so haunting in retrospect. His entire catalog is a diary of his struggle to choose life and the fact that the story ends with his death, the nature of his songs, his vocal style... for a hard core Elliott fan it's the sensation that it's like recordings by a ghost who hadn't left the Earth yet

@stevenrivera39776 жыл бұрын
@@Klausinator451 that makes sense. You prolly like music with a lot of songs with a lot of repetition. Not a diss, that's what Queens does a lot. Little Sister, Song For The Dead, Feel Good Hit Of The Summer, all and more have basically the same thing note-wise. For example, Song for the Dead has two notes for the intro (if you wanna count a harmonic as a note then you get one, which isn't musically correct because it's still a frequentey of a note, maybe higher in pitch or flat) Elliott is the opposite, you need to take time and understand the song, because he usually doesn't repeat a lot. I mean he had the verse, chorus, verse structure, but he always added or excluded notes. Josh loves that (No One Knows), so that's why I'm guessing he likes Elliott. Elliott though of chords as puzzle pieces and that's why he ends up with chords that are like make you wonder what the fuck he's doing, and he will just go to the next one, and so on. He made me quit drugs and to play guitar again. Yeah I would shoot up a Mexican 8 Ball of Smack and listen, but it gave me hope and it's awesome.

My interpretation of that lyric is as follows: Elliott Smith had a abusive stepfather of whom he lived with from age 3 to 14... the boss is him, and the blinking on and off is the change of his personality when around others. He seemingly was only abusive to Elliott, and it's said that he molested him... while his half siblings weren't subjected to that. But I really don't know... it's just my interpretation.
@blikjekattenvoer3 жыл бұрын
seems very plausible. I think the blinking might also refer to remembering or re-experiencing his trauma.

I know too little about the original and this cover, but I know this comment hit me the hardest while listening to this, even if my experiences aren’t nearly the same…
@Amy-J3 жыл бұрын
Update: I think I can pinpoint how I feel after listening to both now. The original is like Elliot finally put into words what was wrong growing up. It’s clear, sad, defiant and with some hope that things will get better through booze and suicide. Queens’ version doesn’t offer the same hope. In fact paired with your comment, it felt like it was made when Elliot couldn’t put everything into words. The lyrics yet to be truly heard under their tragic notes as the louder buzzing of instruments plays a constant looping tragedy endlessly. There’s still enough pain and naivety for him to ask ‘why me…?’. My experience with dating a gaslighting sociopath online will be fundamentally different from Elliot’s… but hearing that ‘he seemingly was only abusive to Elliot’ brought those feelings of total looping entrapment flooding back to me. There was nothing Elliot, or I, could do. We only knew this was wrong.

@sleepcity39 жыл бұрын
nick stephens Not that you are wrong but you could say the same thing about MANY Elliott Smith songs. A really transparent example comes from when a formal intervention was organized by some friends and his management in the late 90s, which yielded "Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands" on the album XO. Also these silly KZbin comment flame wars about who is a better vocalist or player or writer or whatever are obviously silly (and appear on basically every music related video on KZbin). Come on, young'uns, it's music. Just enjoy it. Don't take a picture, don't write a dissertation, don't hector someone at a party, just connect with it. As Elliott said once (paraphrasing) "If you like it, there must be something good about it because...well, you like it." QOTSA and Elliott Smith and Heatmiser, etc. are apples and pineapples and beautiful oranges.
@nickstephens34409 жыл бұрын

@hollydaugherty26209 жыл бұрын
nick stephens He wasn't even addicted to drugs when he wrote this song. He said himself numerous times that his songs weren't "about" specifically what he was writing about. He enjoyed using symbols for bigger pictures, bigger ideas. You people just want to write every song off as being about drugs, even ones written when he wasn't using.
@sleepcity39 жыл бұрын
You people? Who? Did you ever meet Elliott Smith? Have you ever had an addiction problem? Sure, no art is strictly "about" one thing but honestly there's a difference between being open to wider intepretation and being utterly naive. Drugs and addiction are suffused into his songs because they were a part of his life. To suggest otherwise is naive.
@RushAnthem6912 жыл бұрын
Ahh interesting info, I guess it was influence by booze but with Queens' you never know. On a side note one of my favourite Kyuss songs is Conan Trautman.
