Oh, great! I have always been wondering why you never reviewed this before. You see, I bought Hypnotic Poison, Tendre Poison, and Pure Poison because of your reviews. Poison is the only fragrance I bought without your influence. Anyway, the vintage for this masterpiece is spectacular! I recently got two vintage bottles. All my students compliment me! P.S: I am dying to get Midnight Poison but it is not available here in the Philippines. Sadness. Love from the Philippines!

I absolutely love this perfume. I own a near full vintage bottle, and occasionally spray it in the air as aroma therapy. It smells like burning incense while drinking wine with warm baked cookies. I would never ever wear it though, not for me. But I LOVE the fragrance itself. It invokes childhood nostalgia too. 😊

This is an excellent and very descriptive video which should be saved for reference. I had poison in my life from the launch in 1985, and stayed till date 2021 in my absolute love collection. I have been on the hunt for a similar fragrance, and I can confirm after 36 years that there is none. Despite the reformulation this is a transendent opulent tuberose queen whether we like it or not.

This perfume.... THIS MASTERPIECE, is like nothing I have ever smelled before (and I have smelled many a perfume in my life). It opens with glacial tuberose sprinkled atop a bed of decadent honey, then blooms into an opulent symphony of white florals, jammy plum, with the slightest hint of resin and smoke, and a minty undertone given by the anise seeds. Fire and ice dance in this bottle, everything blending in perfect armony to create a heavy yet airy scent. Having known, worn and adored so many Leviathans of the 80s perfumery (and not only) I bought this blindly, expecting a certain harshness (that I love) that seems to characterize the scents of the time. Instead, I got this shapeshifting beautifully blended concoction, this polarizing beauty. She is aristocratic yet motherly, deadly yet nurturing... To my nose, it is slightly similar to Magie Noire, but much warmer, delicious and rounded - like a distant, richer and more sophisticated cousin, perhaps. And indeed, she does smell purple, and perfectly combines the coolness of this colour with the warm sweetness of the plum. Ravishing, glorious, unique and DEFINITELY my signature scent - and I am an indecisive fraghead, so I say it as the ultimate compliment to this alluring deadly potion.

@@ouch110 Definitely. :) Poison is such a strong scent that for some it might be headache inducing. On the other hand, it's a head turner as well, and I get many compliments when I wear it. However, there is no inbetween with Poison. People either love it or hate it (the same vibe I get from TF Black Orchid). As for Poison Girl Unexpected, it's a people pleaser. Sweet, girly and daytime appropriate (as it doesn't offend anybody) - and yet, ginger makes it super unique and memorable, while the vanilla makes it warm and cozy. :) I use Poison Girl Unexpected during daytime and Poison during nightime and for some special events/occasions. :)

I just compared the recent formulation with one of the earliest versions. The recent (2018) smells thinned out and watered, the herbal notes gone and has this strange shreekish clinical note in the back. The wonderful complexity of the early formulations is gone, the basis is not as divers as it used to be and the recent ones smells cheap, in comparison. Sadly. Though, the latest formulation is better than the previous ones, I have to say, but it still is light years away from the strength, intensity and the wonderful composition of the early (the original) formulation(s). If you know and want POISON smelling like the one in the eighties it is best to hunt down a vintage bottle on eBay. If you're younger, you might like the recent formulation... If you're older and looking for memories in the recent formulation, you'll be very very disappointed.

I agree with everything you have said here. I buy a cheap £5 copy fragrance called "Chacal" by Milton llyod. It smells just like the 80s EDT, super strong and long lasting. I've had many people say things like "ooh, are you wearing poison, my sister wore it in the 80s, haven't smelt it for years", and so on.... Which tells me it's totally passable as the real deal. It doesn't smell cheap at all and is miles better than the weak crap sold by Dior now. Milton llyod copies are all pretty good. Got ones of lpu lou, black orchid and coco chanel too. Had A few stinkers from that brand too, but worth a gamble for £5!!

Glamouros witch! Yes! I think sometimes we have to just accept that things are reformulated and deal with it, or just move on to something else, there are hundreds of frags out there waiting to be discovered. The only thing is, the prices are going up despite cheaper ingredients being used, and that sucks.

It's a shame you couldn't get your nose on the original. If you think this current blend is strong, the original would blow you away. This current blend is almost unrecognizeable to the original. One spray of original Poison would literally fill an entire room. Urban legend has it that some public spaces banned people wearing Poison from entering due to customer complaints. I had a bottle of the original and that incredible plum is forever burnt into my scent memory. This current version... I'll pass.

Iconic? For sure, this is one of Monsieur Dior legacy in perfume world. He personally asked Flechier to create this one as a nuke, to create some push for Dior newest collections at that time. This is simply, the epitome of Oriental.

Tried for the first time today, was shopping after that and was thinking, what smells so good, that was it. I smell plum, which resembles me sweet cherry, probably a mix with tuberose, incense, doesn't smell old, seductive, hypnotic, sultry. Came home and ordered it. Was very surprised there were so many disliked on fragrantica, maybe they were talking about the 80's original one.

I'm sure Morganna LeFay was the muse or inspiration for Flechier.... at least I like to think so. I'm a man and I wear Poison so much one might say it is my signature scent. But I feel a man can only pull this off if he secure, confident, and uses a very light touch. It only is applied to my skin which is the ouija board that brings forth this olfactory specter's true apparition.
@ouch1105 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I think a guy can pull off ANYTHING if he is confident and wears it with pride, the same way a woman can wear something marketed towards men. In my job I meet tons of ladies that want to smell like "traditionally" masculine compositions.

Great review Ouch, you are much kinder than I would be describing this reformulation. I own two vintage bottles. Luv the "tuff titties" comment. LOL
@frenchtoast58433 жыл бұрын
I just purchased a very, very vintage bottle. It is pre barcode and does not have a list of ingredients. I may even be from the launch year. I look forward to trying it! I honestly have no recollection of Poison in the '80s. I wore several other fragrances then that I was very happy with, and at that time, not many people around me wore perfume, and I never tested a lot of fragrances, either. Oh, the wasted years! (LOL) Is just me, or does "Poison" seem a rather odd choice of name for a perfume? Generally, if I think of a bottle of poison, I picture a bottle with a skull and crossbones, which is not a very warm and comforting picture. Why "Poison" then? I do not understand how the name is supposed to sound appealing or interesting. No one would call a perfume "Sweaty Elbows" now would they? That is not a very appealing name and does not conjure warm, attractive images either. I have never read any information on this anywhere before. Can anyone explain the choice of name, "Poison?"
@noellevitasa61697 жыл бұрын
You noted that the reformulation will behave somedays like you sprayed nothing and then that somedays it will grace you with a beautiful halo. This is true, to my experience. I believe that sometimes temperature makes us anosmic to a synthetic ingredient in Poison. But when climate is cold, it is very intense and heady with the help of airconditioning, this liquid is truly what it represented-- a powerhouse. I have a vintage bottle, sillage is a problem as with every vintage bottle. I believe that the natural fixatives employed in the vintage allows it to be a nuclear performer but as to post IFRA, sillage is toned down but not skin scent-y as one commenter here noted. This is powerful, not an inch lesser than the vintage. Though the differences lie in the note pyramid. New Poison boasts of a very heady opening (coriander concentrated) but dries down (sae with the vintage) to a very beautiful heliotropey woody drydown as compared to the vintage which boasts of a full-bodied composition, it was full of nuances, very well-blended, wine-like, more incense, wine and plums.

Wonderful fragrance, it's so deeply attached to my early scent memories. It was a major hit in the mid eighties and almost every wealthy woman wore this at some point, in the same way shoulder pads were fashionable. Have to admit that I'm not a huge fan (I'm devoted of the original Opium) but it's an intriguing fragrance that I only wear in the house. Another big one was Byzance, glorious mellow oriental, could you review it sometime?

@@ouch110 They don't make fragrances like Byzance anymore... I haven't find anything in the market that faintly evoques this overlooked beauty. This is so nostalgic for me, very 90s 80s, cant wait to wear when I get passed 30, I always picture a dark haired woman rocking this like Isabelli Rossellini, Fanny Ardent or my dear Aunt Sofia lool!!

Why would you have to wait till you get past 30 to wear a perfume? Where do people come up with this stuff 😑

What have they done to Poison? I used to wear it years ago & I loved it's distinctive fragrance. Now however it has changed beyond recognition.... & I won't be buying it again. I am fairly knowledgeable on fragrance, in having many years experience working for high end brands. Dior is still one of my favourites brands.

Love your review I am not a fan of the current Poison I wear the vintage (1992) bottle if u love the current u would love the vintage more. The vintage isn't as harsh smelling in the opening.

Where can I buy this vintage version? is it still available??

The true original is discontinued but the newer formula is widely available all over. It doesn't compare to the original though, it's much weaker.
