Can't believe skaters were like: ''nah flying in the air like that is kook now!'' at this exact moment in time. I aknowledge early 90's have been crucial for the blooming of street skating in general. But the total rejection of such an amazing discipline as vert is bugs my mind. Hosoi had to face so much shit afterwards. Yes he mismanaged his own with drugs. But it was also because of the total rejection of all of his work by his own community. Good thing nowadays we respect and give the spotlight to every disciplines in skateboarding.

It’s not that simple, vert only fell out of fashion because almost no one on Planet Earth had access to a vert ramp so no kid could relate to it. As a kid when you go skateboarding you go outside your house, drop the board down and ride it. Kids only saw vert ramps in the magazines and videos, never in real life.
@bassage139 ай бұрын
At that time you had to be a rich kid to have access to a vert ramp. It's only natural that skaters rejected it. Most of us were poor.

@@robfromvan Rob, you hit the nail on the head! I saw vert in videos and magazines and thought it was amazing but the closest vert ramp was an hour drive away (too young to drive) and cost money to Skate. The local school yard with stairs and embankments was free and a couple minutes walk away. Almost no one hated on vert, it's just that it was so niche compared to the asphalt that surrounded us.
@robfromvan4 ай бұрын
@@SJK-uc6lf if you look up the movie called Radical Moves on KZbin, it’s about the Expo 86 pro contest. That vert ramp after Expo was located where I would have to take 3 buses from my house to skate it. Once I get there I was too scared to even drop in. It was so large I couldn’t even roll in. Since then, as an adult, I have learned to drop in on vert and at one point learned to do an axle stall on vert also, but this is years later. Back then we just skated whatever was around us. Painted curbs, banks, slick parking blocks, the curb outside my house, etc. Even the nearest skatepark to skate bowl (skateparks we’re all bowls then w/ no vert) was 45 mins. subway and bus ride to get to, so yeah back then it was all street.

It's amazing how far it's come though... nowadays, you watch a vid of someone like Shaun White, most of these "tricks" would almost be considered like "filler", they're doing 360's and 540's multiple times in one run, only time you see grabs and stuff are just for setup before they do something insane.

Clothing became simpler yet much cooler in 90s.
