Christian Owen | This House Would Pressurise Israel to Exchange Peace for Land | Cambridge Union

Christian Owen speaks as the Third Opposition speaker to the motion on 4th May 2023 at 7:30 in the Debating Chamber.
This debate will be examining Israel's military and settler presence since 1967 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. In the wake of an especially violent year in the West Bank and the recent election of an Israeli government particularly committed to the retention and settlement of these territories, engaging with this enduring conflict is particularly vital. We will examine whether there should be more pressure on Israel to give up control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and if doing so now is a crucial step towards lasting peace.

It looks like the videos on yt don't include the QnA or the outcome/vote, both of which hopefully occurred. The QnA in particular is the most important bit, where the weaknesses of peoples' positions are targeted by their opponents.

His suggestion that Israel should stop fighting Hamas (a security threat that will never cease to attack Israel under any circumstance), because of the pictures that come from Gaza after airstrikes, is insane. And we what happened as a result of such forgiving policy against Hamas, in Oct 7th. It's weird that he said that, because later he explained himself, how Hamas only wants to destroy Israel. I also don't understand why he used the blockade on Gaza as an example of a concession Israel could make. Lifting the blockade wouldn't help to make peace with the PA because the PA doesn't care about a blockade on Gaza, and it also wouldn't help to make peace with Hamas, because Hamas only wants to destroy Israel, and would never agree for any settlement. Overall he made some good points about the issues of suggested resolution to the conflict, but he also brought up some ideas that don't make much sense.

Only Egypt is also blockading Gaza and has reinforced its boundary to do so! Why keep blaming Israel for the blockade? Especially when Israel let thousands of Gazans into Israel to work every day?!
