Vin & Sori, I grew up in a Christian home, went to church every Sunday and "youth group" every Wednesday. Throughout this time, I was a metalhead and because of that, I was often shunned in my church. Countless people would come up to me, or call me to try and "counsel me" on my musical choices. Regardless of the fact that albeit I was listening to metal, my spiritual growth never ceased, they still felt the urge to "correct my behavior". I post the lyrics to a song once (unfortunately don't remember the song) and I remember an Elder of my church reaching out to me saying he was concerned for me. What I couldn't wrap my head around then, and still can't to this day is how he felt justified in saying the music I enjoyed was going to condemn me to Hell, as essentially that was his message in the end. After watching ALL of your videos, I've had a refreshed sense of Christianity and I can't describe how nice it is to see other's who believe what I believe but can still enjoy what I enjoy without thinking they're going to Hell for enjoying it. In one of your videos on Behemoth (not a huge fan of this band but it's the most opposite to Christianity, I chose to focus on it) Vin says: "Just because he's intending for these lyrics to be towards Satan, doesn't mean they have to be. They can easily be applied to God as well." This was probably my biggest point growing up; just because the lyrics say one thing, doesn't mean I apply them that way, or that I interpret them the same way the artist intended. I think that's the point of music, to use it however you can to help you through what you're going through. Truly, I doubt at the end of it all God is going to care if I listened to Slipknot all my life as long as I still believed in him, and lived a life for Christ. Basically, I want to say thank you for being the open-minded Christians I know exist, but are too often misrepresented. I look forward to your future reviews and wish you both the best as you continue on. If I could make a request, listen to Motionless in White - Immaculate Misconception. I think it spells out what I'm trying to say perhaps better than I'm saying it. God Bless - Soulcrifice

Soulcrifice Sorry to here you were treated that way, most of our brothers and sisters are virtue signaling when we shouldn't seek glory but give our glory to god. And only assume Christians are going to hell for liking metal I would say if you still have that problem give then the lyrics to crown of thorns by for today then show them the music. God bless.
@KlaustheViking6 жыл бұрын
This is my point of views on music and being a Christian (I am a metalhead too, by the way)... We are taught that we use our voices to glorify God, that is why we sing in church and all. If you choose music that has lyrics that, in a way, glorifies Satan, and you sing to it, you are choosing to glorify the evil one than God. I could be wrong about that, but I am not saying get away from metal, but be skeptical of what you listen to. Vin and Sori make good points about interpretation of the lyrics and open-mindedness, but again, be skeptical of what you listen to and why you listen to it. God bless.
@nicodemusblackowl6 жыл бұрын
I'm a devoted Christian who also happens to be goth. I've gotten the "we're concerned" speech from elders at my church too. I was even asked to step down from ministry (media) because the elders and pastors thought that my look was "too extreme". Even though I never came to church wearing a white face; the most I've ever done was wear black nail polish and black eyeliner, black clothes and maybe a few chains. I'm the kind of Christian who wants to break the christian culture bubble. It's not biblical, it's man-made. God made us to be free. He's called us to be the light in our dark world, not a bunch of cynical, judgmental cronies. Satan actually uses Christians like that to turn people away from God, and that's the sad part that they don't even realize. Too heavenly minded but no earthly good. Too many Pharisees in the church today.

If it hurts - you're doing it wrong and you shouldn't do it this way (you have only one voice, be careful). I started practising 3 weeks ago and I can do it for hours. You have to use your false chords instead of your "true" chords which you use when you're talking. False chords are higher up in the throat. Also practice breathing, with a proper breath support you will be able to growl effortlessly. Breathe from your diaphragm, don't take too much air and don't put too much force into the growl. I watched and read tons of tutorials before I got the technique right, it may take a little while for you too.

I think the song as a whole is a story of the crucifixion never taking place, someone stopped it. Hence the disciples burning. This entity that stopped it is looking down on Christ (I’m assuming he’s nearly dead) calling him the son of god out of mockery because he’s defenseless, snuffing in vein because this entity puts themselves on a higher level than him

Great video guys. What I wanted to add about Nergal. I've been following him on various social media platforms for a couple of years and I red his book "Confessions Of A Heretic". He is not your average Black Metal Devil worshipper guy who prays to Satan. Ironically he isn't really a Satanist. He is very much an Atheist. He doesn't believe in ANY God or any higher power. He is not worshipping the devil but he is using Satanism as a tool to criticize the catholic church. I myself am very much of an Atheist too but I really admire the way you look at his art. Very educated and open-minded. Under no circumstance would I ever try to talk you of of what YOU believe in and I appreciate how you aren't doing it either!

I think you guys would have a field day with Ihsahn. Ihsahn was probably the most recognizable name in black metal (one of the founders of the notorious and legendary band, Emperor) but he's also one of the most erudite, intellectual black metal artists out there. His stuff is melodic and at time beautiful. Dark and at time disturbing at times but beautiful nonethless. His lyricism is also incredibly smart and thought provoking. I think you guys would enjoy it both sonically and lyrically, especially for a Black Fire review. I would also encourage you guys to check out some of the documentary's out there on youtube about Black Metal and why it came to be and the intense hatred for the christian church that it was born out of. And while the actions of these angry kids is not to be defended (church burnings, killings etc) there is something behind that rage where the people of Norway felt their ancient traditions and way of life was being forcibly taken from them. Its such a fascinating and ultimately sad story. Satanism is at the very root (as I understand it) about empowering of one's self. Its at its core a selfish religion (not really meant as an insult per say). That being said it doesn't necessarily mean that they are terrible, hateful, blemishes on society. Nergal seems a pretty good example of the value of religions that we may not agree with and may not understand, even if they happen to be in complete opposition to our own. So in answer to the question posed, no I don't think he would be cool with raping anyone even if they are weaker. As I understand it, in satanism if someone is weaker it doesn't mean they are open season for any sort of atrocity imaginable. It simply means that if they are weak, and you are strong, then you are of more value. I suppose you could take that to the extreme, but I don't believe thats at all the intent. Apologies if I get any of this wrong, I've endeavored to learn as much as I can about satanism but there is alot of misinformation and misrepresentation out there. So feel free to correct if I get anything wrong. Great breakdown guys.

This is just conjecture on my part as I don't know how Nergal sees this but maybe he's fully aware of the snake comparison/paradox you pointed out. He might very well see Satan as being deceitful and self serving but at least respect the fact that it's out there and known and not paraded as something it isn't. A weird form of honesty about the fact that you are dishonest? Whereas with God/Jesus, they are presented as pure and perfect meaning that if he feels they are also deceitful (as Nergal feels), there is an extra layer to it due to this image they portray. So by following Satan, you know what you're getting yourself into whereas those who follow God (who he sees as deceitful) are tricked into believing they are following this perfect figure. Again, this is one potential way to look at it which may or may not be correct but might change the way you look at the line.

I think the beginning is a bit based on Milton. You know in Paradise Lost where Adam sees the future and while being saddened by his fall(and Eve's), he also sees that his people live. @VinAnd Sori Overall good analysis. When you were talking about them referring to God as a serpent. Funny enough he was actually referred to as such in the Bible in John 3:14, which is in reference to a passage in Numbers 21:4 - 9. The brass serpent or bronze serpent is a type of Christ in these passages coming in the 'likeness' of the flesh of sin as a sacrifice for sin. I don't think they had that in mind when they were making the lyrics for this song though.

I suppose the way you got offended by some parts of the lyrics and felt the need to boast a little and defend your faith at the end was Nergal's whole objective. I don't want to speak for him, but it makes complete sense, seeing this from a neutral point of view. You have to keep in mind that he obviously doesn't believe in the Christian faith, so he wouldn't care if all content is completely accurate, as long as it seems blasphemous and irritates religious people. Having said that, I agree that some of the lyrics may imply things that Nergal maybe wouldn't want to endorse himself (talking about the Sodom/Tribe of Judah thing when taken literally). Other than that, while I still have some issues with the good/evil, god's work/devil's work worldview of Christianity, thanks for doing the work and taking the time to explain the lyrics, this was really interesting.

It's funny. Nergal was asked about the first line and his answer was "I wanted to come back with a f*cking intense line to start things off

On a side note, speaking about the 12 apostles being burned, I had a thought. I wonder when Jesus walked and sought out each one of the 12 apostles, I wonder if he was seeking out descendants from each of the 12 tribes of Israel, so he could have each of the twelve tribes represented as believers in His being the Christ?

Would you answer one question for me? Do you believe there is any other sin that cannot be forgiven other than rejecting christ as your savior? I have an opinion but I'd like to here your thoughts.

You guys are awesome...lemme add to the stories..I got treated like the anti christ bacause I wore an ax7 tshirt to a church get together. I am a jesus follower and a sinner like everyone else. God knows your motives and heart behind things and I reject people's notion that they're is a way you have to do christianity.

I saw this a lot. Guys here is the answer. Why do people listen to black metal? Regardless of your personal opinion (I'm including myself) you can not take away feeling from someone. Black metal has a certain atmospheric quality. Even if it is a clone black metal band it still has that quality. It's a Euphoric expansive feeling on being and resolution. Coming to terms with death is a great way to get acquainted. People who have lost family or friends, been through tough times, attract to these songs. As Christians (NOT to insult) you have a natural concept of an afterlife. A continuation of experience and memory; Of feeling and life. Without bringing in conceptual understanding of finality and materialism, it seems that a lot of people are simply in denial about what Death really is. When you understand that when you die you dissolve back into nature, but your memories, and the impact of your actions stay, the world opens a Euphoric lens. Your life starts to feel like a movie, and motivation comes back, desire to create memories, and leave an impact kicks in. (Surely many Christians feel this way even with their denial of the observable realities of death.) But that is O.K. not everything is for everyone, and you should follow your own path regardless of your beliefs. All of that is my personal *opinion* of course.

the Leviathan line could also be referencing Hobbes 'Leviathan' when the Leviathan is the state and people, so maybe the image isn't the literal sea monster but the population of the world.

You would really help yourselves by getting accustomed to the basic writings of Aleister Crowley for Nergal is a known Thelemite. That would help on most interpretations of Behemoth lyrics...

Whether you like him or not Nergal is a very interesting and intelligent person. He’s not some weird dude that you’d expect. He’s witty and sharp and knows his shit.

the first line, i interpret it to mean something interesting. jesus is a title, morphed from y'shua, some believe that the jesus of the bible, whose name isn't mentioned(afair), is lucifer, since behemoth seems to enjoy teasing christians, that might be what he's on about.

Crystal Mountain by Death This might be a bit offensive since the lyrical matter is about the lies of religion and using it as a weapon but you might appreciate it for the writing because it is written really well!
