One 'reputable' historian claims one thing and now the status quo, agreed upon by a line of thousands if not tens of thousands of historians, have to bring evidence to counter this claim? It is already there in the Quran and Arul himself admitted to it, which is mind bogling considering it shatters the whole 'theory' to smithereens and there was no point for him to bring it up in the first place as it is extremely weak! Aside the fact that there is a plethora of detailed historical writings, including in the narrations, by muslims and non muslims to fortify the status quo. That there was monotheism in the region is a given as we know (prophet) Ishmael was there but to claim there was paganism? Dug his own hole with that statement.

I watched Ahmad Jallads discussion and all he is saying is that Pagans in the Arab peninsula from far South to far North worshipped several Gods, finally culminating into Allat, Al 3ozza and Manat finally at around the Time of Muhamad they simply 'referred' to them as Al-Illah (The God) then probably to Allah. All Islam was saying is La Illah illa Allah, there is NO God but Allah (The God) so stop worshipping the other Gods with him, the others being Allat, All Ozza and Manat and also Hubal was mentioned in passing in Ahmad Jallads discussion. I think non-Muslims and Ahmad Jallad expected Muhamad (PBUH) to come up with an entirely different name for God for some reason. What other name can there be other than Al - Illah (THE GOD). While pondering this argument don't forget that even before the Arabian Pagans, that Jesus and Jews also referred to HIM as Al Illah (THE GOD). It really is the only intuitive and definitive name - The GOD (Allah). Monotheism is not simply worshipping Allah despite worshipping other Gods along with him (like Trinitarians), monotheism is the worship of the THE GOD alone. Historians are not Theologians and while they can present evidence they are not qualified to draw theological conclusions.
