ONLY the characters. One of the reasons he's not with the rest of the crew is because he couldn't stand Shatner anymore. They don't actually share any screentime in the film.

In TOS, he was technically briefly in command of a Task Force. That's a Commodore-level command, and he was a Lieutenant (O-3) at the time. Sulu has always shown us his chops. We just never really got to see them like we should have. Honestly, I wish we'd gotten a mid/late-1980's series of Sulu set in the early 2300's after the Tomed Incident, when he was promoted to Flag Officer of some kind, or a late 1990's series showing Sulu in the run-up to TNG (2340's/2350's) and his wind-down to retirement.

Night Orders, left by the Captain, details when to wake a Captain of any vessel. Also, reports are routinely made to Captains at specified times and what is to be reported by a messenger from the officer of the Deck(OOD). This would be one of those wake up and report.

Fun fact Christian Slater and Brent Spiner both had their own air debut on an Anthony horror show called: Tales from the Dark Side. Can't remember the episode name but Slater played a concerned grandson, and Spiner played a pastor. It was an old Western account of a feller too proud to be told he's wrong, even when they tell 'em he's dead.

The reason Christian Slater was in ST6 is because he was such a Trek fan and his mother is Mary Jo Slater who was doing casting for it. Supposedly, from what I've heard, Christian Slater told his mom "You don't even have to give me acting credit for it. Just let me put on a uniform and have a line or two."

They should have had Sulu in more scenes fighting alongside his old crew mates. This is something Kirk would have totally done. Sulu learned so much from Kirk and the others. First and foremost..... Slater wasn't the first choice. Another was cast for this bit roll. But that guy died. I think they was friends. Not sure on that part. I recall Slater saying he is a Fan of the franchise. He would donate the money he made to charity. Is coincidence that his mother was this movie project? Probably. But it certainly helped eh. ❤

I think it's sad we have to settle for as small a scene as this to show us George Takei is capable of so much more than just sitting at helm, or just giving tersely-worded orders. The nuance here really makes Sulu feel like a real person and not just a character we've known and loved for, like, 60 years.
