"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

Straight up, I would have been unpleasant, he shows more self restraint that I believe I couldn't muster if I was in his shoes, my recording may have never made it on air in the first place, and then I wouldn't have been able to argue against his narrative in front of the public, or even if I could I would've destroyed myself optically to his biased audience. The only thing that people watching this on fox will take away is that AOC is a hypocrite and enforce their existing believes that dems and the left is dumb. But I suppose that is also the ultimate goal of the "new left". To abandon the electoral process and blow up our few allies in congress. A black guy in hoodlum outfit talking about unions on Fox? If Chris Smalls didn't exist, Fox News would have to invent him. And you be like; "This is good". I swear the american lefts are going to remain perpetual losers and archieve nothing.

*Kyle is an idiot but Krystal should know better!* I am extremely disappointed in Krystal for making this unionization campaign about AOC. It's not the job of a congressman to interfere and meddle in a union election where some of the workers may be Republicans or hate AOC. AOC involvement would've been weaponized against her and against the workers. Meanwhile AOC and others are working on a legislation requiring union and worker protection from federal contractors; i.e doing their job of (legislating). Don't get me wrong, you have to voice your support and advocate, but you have to be smart about it. Now if you think AOC should've done more, less or different that's a tactical disagreement which is far from justifying going scorched earth on AOC. *Krystal being petty and toxic* even in the last video with Kyle talking about Nina Turner and the endorsement of her opponent by the Progressive Caucus refers to fake allies or people pretending to be allies for Smalls. Suppose AOC is totally wrong about any issue, how is it helpful to make it personal and start petty Twitter fights. That shit is why *YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO WIN* until you learn how to form alliance in politics to *get policy victories rather than symbolic gesture crap.*

If Chris Smalls goes to public office, you would say the same about him in a year or 2. I saw a list of the things AOC did go to to advocate for the policies she stands for and supports. If you are going to list all the things people didnt do or attend to you can never be satisfied. Tina Turner, will be turned on by people very much like you, Chris Smalls will. There is this anti politician sentiment that is so damaging. Look how even the milder criticism is really blaming AOC, The whole Squad is doing a fantastic job in the conditions they are in, but people expect them to be super heroes, and funnily enough they fall a bit short of that standard..... The criticism is unfounded as in the Squad or here specifically AOC doesnt care anything about this, you could criticize that she wasnt at any rally specifically if you think she should be there. But the list of things you didnt do will always be infinitely larger than the things you do. This criticism, the focus is ultimately failed and wrong and does exactly what the detractors want, ie undermining people that works and advocates for us. This is not specifically about AOC but all politicians et al. Sad to see that it has worked, reading the comments here, and takes the focus away from the bad faith actors, yeah like Tucker Carlson, but also many others, large corporations etc.

Leftists pointed out AOC's absence so she would show up for the next one even if it's not backed by the larger union groups (likely the main reason she skipped it), Tucker, on the other hand, just wants to make AOC look bad and couldn't care less whether she goes to the next Amazon rally or not.

@snapgab
@snapgab 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he didn't dismantle Tucker at all, he didn't push back against Tucker he just moved on to a different subject whenever Tucker mentioned AOC, moving on without taking the bait is not the same as pushing back, the added backstory about how he specifically said that he didn't want to talk about AOC makes me even more disappointed about how little he pushed back. He could've explicitly said that eben if AOC's support is imperfect, at least she's still pro-union whereas literally every single Republican is actively anti-union. But no, he never even used the R word. He let Tucker paint all progressives as hypocrites and paint Amazon as a progressive company, without pushing back on either of those things. The takeaway from this video of an average Fox viewer is that progressives are hypocrites and Amazon is bad because it's progressive, it's not that unions are good. Kyle acts like Chris "dismantled" Tucker because he got Tucker to "expose" how he isn't pro-union, but that's because Kyle thinks about the deeper implications of what Tucker says in a way thay Fox viewers do not, Fox viewers don't think this interview "exposed" Tucker in any negative way. I'll never say that it's inherently bad to go on Fox News, but you need to be ready and able to push back against their bullshit. Chris Smalls was sadly not really able to do so, he allowed himself to be used by Tucker to shit talk progressives. That's worthy of criticism IMO, I'm sure he has good intentions but he didn't perform very well.

I agree completely. Kyle is really over-exaggerating to make it seem like Chris countered Tucker's narrative and propaganda. Chris did fine - he didn't take the bait and stuck to his union talking points, but simply saying "Nobody showed up" is not some sick burn on Tucker or the Republicans or even corporate Democrats. Countering the narrative would've been to effectively lay out how nearly all the rest of the politicians are actually far worse than AOC on this & say something like the Republicans and most of the Democrats don't even give Amazon Unions or strikes the time of day & that this is only a focus on AOC because she's actually supported Amazon's right to unionize and worker activism (ie how Chris Smalls met AOC in the first place at a DC protest) & it was only a point of contention to ensure AOC showed up for the next rally, something Tucker, Trump and the Republicans he consistently bootlicks for are in total opposition of. I mean, like I said, I think Smalls did fine, but this ain't some silver bullet on Tucker Carlson people are acting like it is.

Did Tucker showed up? Why would he? Remember Trump campaign? "Jobs, jobs, jobs". The champion of the blue collar workers.
