People don’t understand, the pre-scream 90s (90-95) Tales from the Crypt was the biggest horror property by far. Amazing show. It’s a shame that the lawsuits have handicapped it.

I started over-the-road trucking in 2012. A lot of truck stops back then had fairly decent DVD sections. I bought all 7 seasons of Tales from the Crypt at various truck stops across the country. Watched them all several times in the cab.

I can imagine Kino Lorber putting it out on Blu-Ray 1 season at a time like they did Night Gallery, Outer Limits, etc. Which would be really expensive.

I have the DVD set of Night Gallery and was surprised to see KL release it on Blu for the price they did.. since the difference just isn't enough of an upgrade quality wise 🤷‍♂️

Compare the 2004 anchor bay dvd of The Pit 1981 to the Kino blu ray. The movie actually looks worse on the blu ray lol. Kino Lorber has the most boring side labels too.

I own the separate dvd of all the seasons. I bought them all at once on Amazon back in 2008. Love the Christmas episode with the Dr. Giggles actor playing the deranged Santa.

Really love this show! Easel Kill Ya from season 3 is my favorite. I owned the individual releases that you have. During my most recent rewatch, I found a disc in season 3 was defective and no longer played in my disc player. I was devastated, so I looked to buy another copy of season 3. During my research, it seemed as though those individual seasons are usually used and hard to come by, and typically in the $15 - $25 range. I found the complete series for about $30, so I ordered that. But BEWARE! Unless my copy is a fluke, the picture quality looks more like VHS quality, so I think the "chunky box" newer release is a lower quality. Cases and printed cover art also looks lower quality. But it does not look bootleg or anything. Just cheap. Be curious if your slimmer complete series box set is also lower quality than the original, individual release.

The reason why the show is not getting a Boo-Ray or Gore-K release anytime soon (or at all) is because of the trademark registration of The Cryptkeeper (HBO's version) being expired which just happened recently. Before the trademark was terminated, EC Comics (The Gaines Estate) and Silver Pictures/Tales From The Crypt Holdings (Joel Silver) have been in an on going legal battle in regards to the naming rights of the character. EC Comics had a "likeness of confusion" case in regards to their version of the character "Crypt-Keeper" against Cryptkeeper, and because the HBO version was not being utilized for quite some time, the case was in limbo, even during the TNT/M. Night Shyamalan period when they were trying to reboot the show. And AL Katz who served as one of the definitive writers on the show, on his podcast, stated that the Gaines family do not have the best relationship with Joel Silver in how he handled the property.

Back in 2006 when series one and two came out on dvd they were region free even though the box said Region A, which was great because I could import and enjoy them. Then they locked the regions from series 3 onward.

Being born in 1981, my childhood was blessed once my parents had HBO cable service courtesy of Cablevision here in The Bronx. We were one of the first neighborhoods to get wired for that great service. Some years later, my father ended up getting a device known locally as a BULLET, which was hooked behind the cable box and gave us free pay-per-view and porn! Got to watch PULP FICTION endlessly via the bullet device. At any rate, I had the privilege of watching TALES FROM THE CRYPT during its original run from 1989 to 1996. That viewer warning, with a cackling Cryptkeeper and closed caption sign next to him used to creep me out. The quality actually got better over the seasons. More celebrities wanting to do uncut, horror stories on pay cable! Oh, and my earliest exposure to swearing and nudity. I do recall the whole British episodes from the last season. Hell, a pre-Bond Daniel Craig was in a funny episode. Ewan McGregor as a vampire? Loved that bit! As a native New Yorker, I do recall watching my man Morton Downey, Jr. on WOR-TV Channel 9 from Secaucus, NJ. Loved his rapid fire delivery and comedic timing!❤

The German blu ray is just standard def on blu with less discs. Probably also PAL, still a pretty sweet set though.

As kids back in the day we use to call those Boxes with the numbers on top . Hot Boxes I remember watching Early seasons of the Tales From The Crypt show & the Deamon Knight movie both on the Hot Box.

I didn't have HBO (or cable) growing up, so all I got to see was the edited Tales on Fox. Those Saturday nights for little 10 year old me were AWESOME.

I got the German bluray set. It is SD on BD, But its probably from a PAL dvd source which means higher resolution than American NTSC dvd sources. USA dvd has 480 lines while PAL is 576 lines. Framerate is higher on US dvds mostly with 29.97fps compared to PALs 25fps. Less soap opera look on PAL. So its a choice of taste. German menus on the german release though.

I loved this show back in the day. Would always watch it whenever I got a free trial of HBO, when it came out on dvd I was getting the single seasons but when the chunky box set came out I got that and still have it on my shelf

I bought all the seasons seperately, mostly all at Target so all mine are like yours. Tales was my favorite show. Was watching it when it first came out. Those brick cases, I can't stand those. I'd have to disagree about them saving space. Perhaps compared to the first release. However, they could've easily used standard dvd cases that hold up to 5 discs, split amongst 4 cases and not only be about the same width but also without having to stack discs on top of each other. I've got the complete Farscape that came in one of those bricks. Using either 5 or 6 disc blu-ray cases, I was able to seperate by season and the space used was the exact same as the brick.

we had one of those boxes in the 90s where we got all the ppv channels etc then those died out it was all about illegal satelite that we had and you program a card to put into the boxes, now its IPTV

Tales from the Crypt was my childhood. I casually started collecting those season sets years ago and then before I got them all they disappeared from shelves. I've been meaning to complete the collection but worse than that is I can't find my seasons anywhere! So I might need to snag a full boxset... not sure if I should go the Blu-ray route. Maybe I will just so it doesn't compete with my dvds, if I ever find those.

Good stuff! I have the individual releases as they came out. A little funky because the first 2 are a bit shorter & different cardboard packaging than the others (digipak then slim cases in a slipcase), but they look uniform enough. And I like all the artwork and how they look like comic books.

I think source material not being strong enough to make HD is likely a thing too, I wish it was on Blu-ray just so the image can be blown up a bit bigger on big TVs. If you've tried to watch a dvd on a big TV you'll notice it looks pixelated.

Monsterland media makes a blu ray 1080 set I believe .. it’s bootleg but they make all kinds of great old tv shows and stuff on blu ray lol I’m not huge into bootleg but if I can find a great quality set on stuff not released I will lol .. they even have X-men animated series on blu ray 1080 p 5.1 surround sound

I just bought the DVD set with separate cases. The picture looks better than I thought!! Almost no interlacing visible ever, minus the extremely rare frame or two. I may not see every pore on people’s faces, but it’s pretty clean-looking. Good for now, but that said, make a bluray set and I’ll for damn sure get it. But I’m in no hurry, because the SD version actually works better for horror than HD does, imo.

I honestly wish the companies would release more of their stuff on blu-ray in the (SD on BD) line. Like Discotek for old cartoons. Germany's Turbine? does it with live action shows too. It's a more durable format and bitrates should be better with less need for compression.

Would you do a video on the precursor to TFTC "The Hitchhiker" (1983-91)? It has never been completely collected on any format even though it lasted 6 seasons (1-4 HBO 5-6 USA).

I did own the original release of the first season when I was a little kid but I watched it out to the point each disc was covered in scratches so I unfortunately had to get rid of it. Now I own the big box set with 7 separate cases but disc one of the first season is starting with Disc Rot literally a year after I bought it. As for the German blu ray, I looked into it and the episodes haven't been upscaled and it's 7 discs with each season fitting on a disc

The individual ones you have are far more desirable than the 2017 box set that you got second. I had to send that back because the several discs didn't play! Be warned everyone, MANY people have problems with the 2017 release. Have you tested them? I need to get your first set. Great video!

I like those individual releases. I have the chunky boxset. It still looks decent on the shelf with the coloured cases showing at the front. I’m also collecting the EC Archive graphic novels Tales From the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Buying as and when they drop etc. Vault Vol 4 is out next week. The stories are just fantastic and hold up as some of the best horror stories ever written. Television Terror is my favourite episode too, love it! If you like that have you seen the BBC supernatural mockumentary Ghostwatch that aired in 1992? Check it out.

Germany has a SD on Blu-Ray release from Screen Power in a DVD case. The case makes it look like a Bootleg (it isn't to my knowledge) but at least it's practical. It's one season per disc and the Blu-Ray discs as such of course are much more robust than DVDs but i would probably murder for a true HD release.

I imported the show arround 2008/09 from the US to germany, since back then we didn't have an official release here bwcause the show was partially banned and censored. I remeber that i got 3 double sets, which had always two of the normal releases in them, for super cheap back then. The nice part abojt the first to DVD seasons is also the small skits with the barely functioning Keeper-Puppet :D

I bought the first two seasons years ago, but never got around to importing the others (I'm from the U.K). I did hear a rumour that the earlier pressings suffered from disc rot like a lot of Warner titles of that period did (they were using a disc plant that wasn't up to snuff, apparently), but the later release is probably fine. Those earlier versions were cool, though. I might get them from ebay, as they are still somewhat easy to get, even though it's cheaper to buy the box set.

As a HUGE fan of Tales of From The Crypt (love the 1972 British Amicus movie too), I absolutely enjoyed EVERY single bit of this video. That shelf-friendly TFTC box set is very tempting, but the thing is, I already have all the series in those stand alone DVDs you also showed off, and this is actually a dilemma I always agonise over: should I ditch all my separate DVDS and replace them with a more shelf-friendly box set? As my horror movie collection augments and augments, I am fearing that soon I will run out of shelf space, and so maybe I might feel more and more inclined to get that slimmer box set. I am sure you would agree that this sort of dilemma - trading in stand-alone DVDs for more shelf-space-friendly box sets - is a constant problem. The no-brainer decision to this problem would be, of course, if they evenutally DID release a blu box set of TFTC, for in that case, I would DEFINITELY ditch all my DVDs for that much-longed-for upgrade! Keep up the good work with your channel. I absolutely love it. Long live horror!

That German release is the same as the Real Ghostbusters set and the Ren And Stimpy set they did in Germany it's just SD quality not HD quality they just use Blu Ray discs because they can put more episodes onto fewer discs

This is one of my favorite anthology series of all time with the Crypt Keeper and his cheesy dialogue I have one through six of the TV Seasons that I bought off Amazon I never got season seven I heard that one was very weak but season six is weak also Bull Moose did have a DVD set at my local store and I really regret not buying it I will probably get one off Amazon if it's the wide one you showed season is definitely the best one the lumberjack episode was one of my favorite's there's one off season one with Amanda Plummer that was very scary plus the episode with the guy from the TV show wings that one was freaky also you can't go wrong with the first five seasons of the show

Do all of your discs still work on the individual season releases? I have many episodes that would no longer play (I think season 4 & 5) so I reordered the individual seasons and those also didn't work. I read that a lot of older WB DVDs have issues. I'm not sure if this also affects the boxset that includes all the seasons.

The DVDs look especially bad too. A lot of anthology Horror shows deserve Blu-Ray releases. 80’s Twilight Zone, Friday the 13th, Goosebumps, etc.

Hey pal! No I didn’t but I had some people on Instagram tell me about that! I looked at my set with a magnifying glass and I was looking at anything that looked suspect. My discs play fine and they’re definitely not dvdr discs. So I’m not sure what the deal is

Yeah, I have one of the chunky box sets, and it's definitely a bootleg, but it's one of the most professional and sophisticated looking bootlegs I've ever seen. Looks identical to the 2017 set and has pressed discs. In my original comment I was just pointing out all the counterfeiting signs so you or others could check their sets as well. It irritates me that the KZbin police deleted that comment... How does the PQ on your solo releases compare to the set? I'd recommend checking to see if it's identical or not.
