▬ Hot Club Jazz ▬ or "Jazz Manouche" / "Hot Swing"
was developed in Paris during the 1930s by the Romani guitarist Django Reinhardt and French-Italian violinist Stéphane Grappelli.
Their group “Quintette du Hot Club de France” was unusual in that it had no brass lead instruments nor drums, unlike most jazz groups of the 1930s. This was compensated by the guitar’s highly rhythmic playing style called “la pompe” (“the pump”).
Their composition “minor swing” (“Mineur Swing”), recorded in 1937, is regarded as one of the pivotal recordings of Hot Club Jazz as well as Violin Jazz.
It is characterized by simple chord changes and a repetitive structure giving Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli the opportunity to showcase their virtuosity through their solos.

HI Chris, really appreciate your putting these together including the backing track. As i play along i see how much more just playing along i need to do, to get smooth and relaxed. I guess we call it practicing. Appreciate having the backing track as it allows me to explore not only the piece but also my instrument.. Thanks again. Ed

So glad it is helpful Ed! Question: I’m thinking about doing more versions on this tune in which each play along phrase is twice as long. Do you think that would be helpful?

What great fun - Thank you Christian!! I'd love to try similar play along to Klezmer style, with that characteristic flat 6th - sharp 7th interval etc.

Great lesson! I stopped halfway because i want to transcribe the notes and then practise using the sheet music I've written out. What do you think? A good idea or no? Thanks
@ChristianHowesViolin
@ChristianHowesViolin 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. This is designed for people to avoid the need to transcribe. So if it’s difficult to play short phrases back you may want to try the easier videos of mine and then work your way up to the more advanced ones. Not that transcribing will hurt (it doesn’t hurt) Make sense? For more support, resources, invites, etc jump on my mail list at christianhowes.com/education. We’ll set up a free into private lesson on zoom if you want.
