I started watching these videos years ago for takes on films and film theory, but now the history (both religious and otherwise) is by far the main reason I keep coming back. It feels like each new episode for the past year-and-a-half has been more informative than the last. Thanks for being so dedicated to your research!

Loool I have seena video here with the same analogy... So freaky to look back at my younger self who thought "wow, this is a great analogy and I am thoroughly convinced this is some profound wisdom from God himself".

What happened to Christianity is that it got power and power leads to corruption.

My interpretation of this film was that the characters traveled into this kind of hell/no man's land (no God's land) and went mad from being removed from grace. But One-Eye remained consistent and steadfast because he lived his true nature which in turn could say that man's nature is actually godless.

I think he lived true to himself, and desired nothing more than to escape the hell he came from,he ended up in it again but this time with the hope of protecting the boy,and that was his nature.

I always seen One eye is an aspect of Odin, and it seems to be an allegory of how the desert cult of christianity killed our pagan roots.

TheBellWitch .94 however the change from Norse mythology to Christianity was not a violent one on the behalf of the Christians. Our kings in Scandinavia decided to convert and in time the people did too.

Prior to the Christianization of the Roman empire, many Christians were not faced with the responsibility of defending the public and ensuring public order. As a result, some authors of this period had the luxury of entertaining pacifistic ideals without having to worry about keeping people safe.

A pacifistic stance in geopolitics does not always signify complete non violence. It believes that one shouldn't attack unless in defence.

It always strikes me as very strange when Christians -- who believe that god is all-powerful -- believe they must fight "for god" or claim things "for god"... what would an all-powerful being need with an army?

I watched this immediately after your video on The Master and now I'm going to end up having a dream where I'm really invested in the historical evidence for whether Constantine ever truly believed in scientology.

I think that Refn is my favorite modern director. There is not a single film made by him that i didn't like. And i am totaly sure he is gonna be classic in 20+ years or so. Thank you for your video. I would really like to hear what you think about his Pusher trilogy. My favorite crime films of all time.

That is an awesome theme. Great video. Do you have in your channel videos on changes in culture before and after Christianity? Like, after roman/Greek mythology, Norse mythology? The drives and aspirations inspired by these religions that were changed by Christianity, in a broad sense. I'd like to understand more why some people regards this as a degeneration in culture. Or if you could point to me a source, I'd be very grateful. A book or anything really.

Compulsory corvée labour for both irrigation work and war was already used in the late Presargonic period (ca. 2600 BCE), so has indeed been a more or less constant in human history in the strict sense. However it was never used to convince people of religious creeds back then (cp. the lack of monotheism with its associations of Truth (c)). If you haven't already I would recommend the book of the German Egyptologist Jan Assmann on monotheism, it might be up your alley!

You have a very good understanding of history facts and Christian truth. As a plus to the video I would like to recommend 2 books that deal with the history of religious violence: The myth of Religious Violence: Secular ideology and the roots of modern conflict by William T. Cavanaugh and The New Atheism, myth, and history: The black legends of contemporary anti-religion by Nathan Johnstone - both books are written from a historical view and show that the idea of violence as a purely religious product is false and misleading.

I enjoyed it but not the slow aspects from a flowing stand point, made the film drag. A bit like reading a book and by chapter 20 the writer still hasn't really explained anything, all characters but no substance. Visual stunning, probably the best sense of landscape I've ever seen in a film. Made me feel the isolation atmosphere. My interpretation was that no matter where you land, everyone is monsters. The child survived at the end and we must be like children, notice that the child never gets in any conflict during the entire film. Even one eye has mercy for him and even protects him. God is the child and they were seeking God but when actually, he was with them all along. The sacrifice at the end is Christ on the cross and one eye became Christ taking the punishment for us (The Child) so we may live. In my opinion.

So was the Saint Cyprian quote at 19:14 sarcastic or dead serious? He says "considered" but it is still too vague that one could not interpret it as justifying war.

You are wrong about Christianity being a religion of pacifism. Even a cursory look or base level knowledge of the Old Testament disproves that.
