You hit the nail on the head when you said the protection of the institution is more important to the institution then the protection of individual members. There are around a thousand denominations of christians in the world and on every point, you will find enough that will disagree. As long as religion has no power, it will be there for the people. As soon as a religion gains power, it is about extending the powerbase. This is why we not only need freedom of religion but also freedom from religion (the separation of churches and state).

This recording was made for the Dutch tv program called the "2 meter sessions (a reference to the hight of the presenter)" . The idea of the program was to invite wel established bands arrange a studio and let the artist re-record songs in a way the professional company studio's would never allow them to. Epica was the only exception to that concept (they had only just released their debut album at the time). But when the presenter listened to it he was so impressed by it that he went to the producer and said just listen to this. He was equally impressed ant this recording session, with a total of 9 songs, was the results. The broadcast was so successful that a dvd/cd box-set was released called "We will take you with us". My favorite song from this show is "Feint" a beautiful and thoughtful ballad inspired by the assassination of Dutch politician called Pim Fortuyn. In the beginning the press and professional politicians laughed at him. But this guy was professor of social sciences and not a brainless dummy like most of the press and politicians When he started to generate serious attentions the nasty politics of smear campaigns started resulting a left-wing activist who shot him on his way to an interview (they always make sure even today that they leave out it was left winger). Then the same people who had started smear campaign shed the customary crocodile tears while uncorking their Champagne bottles. I was never more disgusted with the press and political parties then at that moment. Even though these circumstances are not part of the song itself it shows the after effects on society. Now that is what call a classy introduction of a band. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH-3knywash0eLs

This song is part IV of a series of songs Mark wrote all with the subtitle "The Embrace That Smothers"; From Wikipedia: "On this album, Mark Jansen continues with the collection of songs that make up "The Embrace That Smothers". The first three parts can be found on Prison of Desire (2000), After Forever's debut album and the following three parts can be found on The Divine Conspiracy (2007), Epica's third album. These songs deal with the dangers of organized religion." Specifically, this song is about the abuse of children from Catholic priests.

The blonde in the video is Amanda Somerville, from Kiske/Sommerville (yes, as in Michael Kiske of Helloween), Exit Eden (4 female metal vocalists that do metal covers of pop/rock songs), and she has her own extensive solo career. She's also married to Sander Gommans, who was Mark's bandmate in After Forever and is involved in many projects with him as well. You guys should hunt down the rest of this performance, it's one of my favorites. Pretty sure the entire thing is on KZbin in some format or another.

Epica is my favourite band but I'm pretty sure there are singers better than Simone, like Floor Jansen. Which is actually ok, because she is still very good in my opinion.
@cykablyat73934 жыл бұрын
I think music is entirely subjective and this search for the objective best should be put to rest. I have seen epica 3 times before I said " not giving this band anymore money". They are hardly professional with their fans i.e. ungrateful and rude/short, and their "amazing" singer is hands down the worst singer I've seen front a metal band. She hid behind the curtain multiple times Everytime I saw them Grace the stage and her voice was hardly passable as good. Three times throughout different eras of their career. I know she can sing, but her attitude is shit and she hardly tried for most of their career. A pretentious brat riding on the coattails of the actual talent in the band, which I can't say is that impressive if you take away the thousands of midi orchestration files. I know this band is beloved, but I was EXTREMELY faithful and liberal with my money towards this band. They are shallow people who view their music as a marketing strategy more than a passion these days. I want to say they "changed" but, from my own personal experience with eyes and ears, they were like that from the start. At least when I met other bands, with arguably more fame, they treated me like a person and not a wallet.
@entiresquare62624 жыл бұрын
@@cykablyat7393 I take psych evaluations from fans with complete scepticism, almost everytime you hear about a band being "rude to fans" or "not passionate" etc. Its always something that is just mental fans not understanding they are just human beings doing music. Floor Jansen was a "diva" because she didnt want to get groped by fans, or band is a sellout when they like other music than purely what they are known for or whatever. Its mental. "hiding behind thousand midi orhestration files" LITERALLY THE FUCKING GENRE THEY ARE IN, THAT IS ONLY WAY TO FUCKING PLAY THIS SHIT LIVE LOL

There is a big problem with pedastry in the gay community (gay men). It's common for an older man to take in and have sex with a gay teen as young as 14. I had a gay step dad (long story), so I was around some of this stuff. He was never anything but good to me, but the sort of people he associated with made me feel uncomfortable as a kid. He himself said that there's a big problem with it in the gay community. There are also a few studies claiming kids are more likely to be abused if they have gay parents, but who knows how true that is. And to be fair, most of the Catholic abuse was priests and young boys.

Loved your commentary. I wrote my Master's thesis on the US evangelical community and the level of nonsense in that community is unbelievable. I won't say more or this will turn into a rant. I feel like the obsession with LGBT people shows they're used as scapegoat. People like having a group to hate on. There's a KZbinr called God Is Grey, she's an LGBT affirming Christian from the evangelical community, I think you'd find her interesting. If you want to do more Epica I'd suggest maybe doing the whole _The Embrace That Smothers_ series: it's 9 songs all on the topic of religion. Cry For The Moon is part IV. The first 3 parts are After Forever songs. It was the band Mark Jansen (guitarist/vocalist) was in before he created Epica. Floor Jansen was the singer. Parts 5 and 6 are on the same album as Cry For The Moon (their first album). Parts 7, 8 and 9 are on their 3rd album. Otherwise I'd recommend their song The Divine Conspiracy, a musical masterpiece with good lyrics too! 🙂

Read the entire set of lyrics, and the notes about the song from one of the band members. He is very clear on the point that this song is NOT about religion. The song is about a priest who raped a child. And they are very angry about it, to say the least, and the comments end with them saying that this must stop. It's not about gay anything (unless the child happened to be a boy, but that's not the point). Try reacting to what the song is REALLY about.
