I also think there might be a hint of reference to the former band members in this song. There's actually a shit ton of layers and hidden meanings in the lyrics for how simple they are. The lines "You go down just like Holy Mary" and "Not just another bloody Mary" alone could be interpreted in at least like 6 different ways.

This song is about Weed. Mary On a Cross (Marijuana Cross... joint). Tickle you internally (the giggles), truth of the matter is I never let you go (still smoking it today), not just another Bloody Mary (not just another alcoholic drink), your beauty never really scared me (the propaganda never kept him away). Mary on a, Mary on a (Marijuana, Marijuana) Cross. It can sound like it’s about Sex, but it’s about Drugs, Marijuana to be precise. And it’s written in a way to piss religious people off. Exactly what happened here. Tobias Forge is smart like that.

@@juansamudio1171 Not sure what other people believe, but I interpreted it as someone possessing a certain quality, characteristic and/or appearance that is seen as distasteful or ugly in society but the lyric "Your beauty never ever scared me." is him saying that he believes that despite all the hatred that is thrown on that certain thing he thinks it's beauty hence the lyrics.
@juansamudio1171 Жыл бұрын
@@explosivemayhem6266 the song is about marijuana so I’m guessing the meaning of that like is about never being afraid of weed but I don’t see how it’s a line worth to die for it just sounds cool in my opinion. Now if I were to apply that line to a girl I liked and she broke someone heart to me that may add more meaning and make it a pretty sad line idk I’m not the best with Lyrics lol
@explosivemayhem6266 Жыл бұрын
@@juansamudio1171 Yeah, I mean if we really do put it in the context of being about Marijuana, then it technically has the same meaning except everyone is "scared" of the drug because they've seen what it's done to people or some other reason but he does not believe so and he believes that it's beautiful because it (probably) takes him away from reality and makes him feel good. So he admires it.

I love how this song is written. There are so many ways you can interpret the song, with yours both being popular along with my personal favorite as "Marry on a cross" sounding like "Marijuana Cross" AKA a Joint with the lines "You go down just like Holy Marry", "If you choose to run away with me, I'll tickle you internally.", and "Your beauty never ever scared me" being references to a "divine" hit that "tickles" your lungs and throat, and that the propaganda against the plant never really deterred them. This band is so skilled, and they deserve their success.

Anthony Parraguirre This Song and Kiss the Go-Goat is supposed to have been written by Papa Nihil (Emeritus Zero) in ‘69, according to Ghost’s Chapter 8: Kiss the Go-Goat and the whole KZbin series they’ve made.
@henkdegraaf16093 жыл бұрын
It's the sound and style from the early sixties, like the mersey beat. Tobias created a musical freedom with Papa Nihil as the first Ghost singer from the sixties. The story says the put out a single "Satanic panic" in the sixties and rereleased it in 2019. So funny if you've seen the the video series.

My favorite song from the '69 vault. I always took Mary On A Cross to be a reference to marijuana and the free love and drug use of the late 60's and early '70's. One way I can think of how the line "Mary on a cross" could make sense in a Christian context is that Mary was there when Jesus was crucified and had to watch her son be tortured to death. So you could say that she felt such empathy for her child's suffering that she was on the cross with him in spirit.

Another Christian here. I’m starting to like this song based off the melody, but I’m very skeptical because of the lyrics (mostly because of the band). If it were written by a different band or had changes to the lyrics, I’d jam to this song repeatedly.

@@garyking3389 is it ok to listen to songs like these as a christian idk cuz i love it but i dont want to listen to it if it has a bad meaning cuz i dont want to disrespect God yk?
@garyking3389 Жыл бұрын
@@mathildahernandez7438, That’s where I’m at, too. I’ve asked my pastor through text if it is okay to listen to a song like this even if the band may be satanic, and he advised to listen to other songs. “There are other songs to listen to” he said. But it can be confusing because I’ve listened to Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean (about sex) and he was a man of God. He went to Church and believed in God, too. Edit: And technically this song was written carefully to try and piss off some Christians. I’m not pissed (slightly disappointed), but it’s band members are quite literally dressed up as pastors wearing upside down crosses (which supports the Anti-Christ. And that is something you shouldn’t ever do). One of the few reasons I even bother listening to this is because I can see this as a background song for a fight scene in a movie (and I’m a movie freak).

@@Giulia-om2gl, I’m just very skeptical because some Christians don’t like the sound of it (my pastor for example) and some of them do. And some, like me, is in that grey area in between. I mean no disrespect to any other Christians or to God just by listening to it, but one of the only few reasons I like it is because (like you said) the melody is pretty good (and by that, I mean it’s quite beautiful). I’m okay with the lyrics (not all of them), but that’s it for me.

It's interesting that you mention Evangelism and its views on female sexuality, because Ghost in their songs are actually known to be very vocal against this kind of thought-process / religious view. Many of their lyrics are about objecting this kind of suppression of female sexuality, or the views of it being "evil" or "satanic". Their second album, especially, is largely almost themed around this subject.

AYYYYEE it finally happened after months of suggesting, love you guys ❤❤ Also, the song is based around the late 60s and early 70s. In the Ghost story, Papa Nihil (the original papa emeritus) wrote the two songs from this album. This is just more backstory for the band really. You guys need to watch the "Chapters" videos to better understand it. This song was about getting high off weed

I'm a Christian. first when i heard this song without the lyrics, i was vibing so hard cause of it's damn catchy tune and that 70s feel. But now when i know a few of the song s interpretations, it disappoints me man. and has made me unclear whether i should listen to this or not. i first thought it was some girl's name- Mariana Mariana cross lol

Since the song is about weed I think the "bloody Mary" just refers to the drink. Like, weed is not just another party substance, it's something "more special" since it's not alcohol which is the legal party substance.

It’s double entendre for marijuana grass, Mary on a Cross marijuana grass. That’s what he says at the end of the live version.

Theory: Mary is on the cross in place of Jesus during the Crucification of Jesus. The song (with Cardinal Copia/Papa IV) is also about his mother, Sister Imperator, standing in front of the gun for her child against Nihil. Nihil wanted Cardinal gone, and thought since he wasn't an Emeritus that he wasn't fit for the role... But the Clergy is supposed to be a vote, not Jacksonian passing of office to family and friends. Nihil was draining the power and potential from all of his children. Not to mention the murders of I, II, and III.

I think this song takes place in the 60’s along with the kiss the go-goat song with the “original” papa and this is the album that he made as the Ghost front man (in a story line perspective) and this is the song he wrote for the sister (what i assume to be his girlfriend or wife in kiss the go-goat) and he’s singing this song go her after she walked out on him when he kissed the girls at the concert of go-goat. And he’s remembering everything that they have gone through

While ghost doesn't have female vocalists they have two female band members! One playing they keytar and one playing a piano(I think it's a piano).They're called the Ghoulettes. ALSO the background vocals in this song are done by one of the Ghouls who have a golden high and buttery voice. He is referred to as Aether by fans

I always thought it was about a relationship. Mary on a cross= woman that had something bad happen ( like Mary being crucified) if you think about it like that, the song could make sense that way as well.
