I did momentarily forget how draconian Apple Records is towards music streaming in general. That said, there are workarounds. But V&S have never been ones to break up the songs to avoid takedowns. Not nearly as much fun to just watch them listen on headphones to music we can’t hear. I’m kind of surprised this one got through. Yoko is equally tight about letting John’s solo work be played without royalties.

Lennon believed god or godliness came from within. Similar to the Zen saying, ‘if you meet Buddha in the road, kill him’ the idea being to kill that notion as Buddha can only be found from within. One has to BE the teaching not just read it. And that is concept of the song ‘God’. Like the opening line of ‘I am the Walrus’, ‘I am he, as you are he, as you are me, and we are all together’ also much like Lennon’s great song, ‘Instant Karma’ - the idea being, take responsibility, don't put it on someone else. 'it's up to you, ya you'

It wasnt about money or who was the star . The were all stars by than. It was about 4 guys who lived for years together as a band and it was just them no one else . They slept in vans together , they did everything together as a group . They often said it was them and everyone else was outside. Also no other wives were allowed in that circle. Until Yoko crashed it with Johns blessing . No that doesnt make her the devil just the wedge who started spreading that hole that was developing between the previously tight knit unit of 4 friends and band mates. She took the blunt of that wrongfully. Forrest Gump really thats your history for one of the most tumultuous decades in history lol ok....You might want to investigate the Statement John made in 1966 when he said "We are more popular then Jesus" which caused an uproar worldwide and led to album bannings ,bonfires and death threats in the US. The album this was from was Johns Primal Scream therapy that he was undergoing whereby you scream out your internal sufferings. Hence his tearing down of all earthly and outer earthly perceived GODS.....The dream was the Beatles and Love he was the voice of the Peace and love movement . Like the song said ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE....Thats why he is saying I was the dreamweaver but now im just me...Get over Beatle fans... PS I dont think you understand the influence of The Beatles on a generation ...

The journerlests and reporters were always right following close by trying to get a story and photographer trying to get a picture ... the Beatles soon began to get tired of being so famous. You had to be there I guess, lol. Today, it would be hard to imagine how much the Beatles meant. Their break up was a monumental time and you can hear the pain and angst in a lot of the songs by John and Paul right after, and this is one of those. There are several songs by both that are them speaking to each other via songs...some humorous and some a bit biting. John wrote several songs after the Beatles that really dealt with different painful things in his life. Even during the Beatles, his songs were always about something he was going through in his personal life. "Help" is a great early example and the lyrics show his desperation at the time, trying to cope with all that was happening around him.

God is a concept by which we measure our pain. A lot of non practicing Catholics/Christians/people in general only call on gods help when things in their life are bad or at their absolute worst. They never pray or acknowledge god when things are going good, but all of a sudden, a family member or friend is in the hospital with a threat of death, what's the 1st thing they do? Pray for gods help. So it's a way to measure their pain. God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

I lived in this time and Woman were not treated as Equals and John and Yoko fought against all those Stupid stereotypes. She sat in their Let it Be sessions quietly mostly because she had just had a miscarriage so wanted to be close to her partner. In the New version of the Film you will see other partners and their kids were there too. Alan Klein screwed the Beatles and Paul saw it for the disaster it was so had to break up the Beatles. The Beatles did many firsts like getting control of their Music and production allowing them and other artists to indulge in their talent. They stopped segregated audiences at their concerts, they had the first Stadium concert. They accepted people from all walks of life and included that in their songs. They did Kids Songs and songs for their Elders and early experimental music...mostly on 4 tracks. They deflated egos and the pomposity of Leaders. John and Yoko did interviews together as equals and spread the message of equality and Peace as an Alternative to the Far Right Dream of Eternal War and everyone should be quiet and in their place.

I see the song as just questioning the things we worship in life, not just the Christian God that many of us believe, but the many things in life that we worship, government leaders, musicians, and so on. There’s the focus on taking care of himself and those around him, “I just believe in me.... Yoko and me”, before worshipping these other things in life. I don’t think it’s a disrespect to any of those beliefs, it’s just there to make you think about what it is you worship. Also referring to himself as the Walrus takes reference from the Beatles song, I Am The Walrus.

It just sounds to me like he's talking about getting back to normal after the dreamlike altered reality of being in the Beatles. As for all the names he mentioned, he's just trying to say that he doesn't think any of those things can be depended on, or have a whole mature life based around relying on them - whether it's worshipping other people, or religions. It's a good song. I doubt the Beatles could have kept going, it was a hugely busy time for them all, and there was probably a lot of stress being part of the Beatles, and they needed a break or get back to a slightly more normal life, and possibly to revive their creativity.

Another thought or two if I may. When I use the word "context" I am in some ways speaking of where ones head is at when they actually write their thoughts, it only reflects where they're at in that moment of time, not necessarily where they "stay" so to speak. Even C.S. Lewis, one of the most renowned defenders in history of Christianity was at one point an atheist. As someone that has been writing poetry & prose all my life I often am shocked by my own older observations in a piece I wrote. Everything is transcendental including our thoughts at the moment. God Bless...You both did a wonderful job on this one...PLH-ELB

The best way to get any perspective of this song is the knowing of the times that this song was written in. It was the end of the insane late 60's and John was right out of the Beatles and going through a heavy spiritual and personal transition. My understanding of God is this: God is a process. God is everything and everyone he mentions in his song. God is everything and everyone that has ever existed and that ever will exist into eternity, the yin and the yang, the alpha and omega, the all in all. To quote a bible passage: "Ye are all Gods" Psalms 82. The Beatles broke up because their journey had run its course and it was time to live the next chapter in their lives. What is that crazy light going on behind you? I want one of those.

The opening line of the song came about because of a conversation John had with his friend, Elliot Mintz. Elliot brought up the correlation between being poor and religiosity. In other words, the poorer the nation or person, the more religious they are. Apparently, John immediately simplified this complex interconnection into "God is a concept by which we measure our pain."

The final section describes Lennon's change since the break-up of the Beatles. While the Beatles were basically his family throughout the 1960s, he states that he is no longer the "Dreamweaver" or "The Walrus", but just "John". The final line of the song, "The dream is over" represents Lennon's stance that the myth "the Beatles were God" had come to an end. "If there is a God," Lennon explained, "we're all it."

Still am hoping one day you guys will do Bob Dylan, he was a lyrical monster, and there is a reason why he was the first 20th century musician to win a Nobel prize in literature, and “It’s Alright Ma (I’m only bleeding)” is prob like 90% of why.

Dr. Arthur Janos of The Primal Institute claims that John had rented a house in Bel Air. There they talked about God. Dr. Janos was going on and on about how people who were in the most pain tended to need the most gods or the presence of God in their lives. John replied, “So God is s concept by which we measure our pain.” Dr. Janos points out how succinctly and efficiently John summarized what he was trying to convey.

this song is John trying to recover his personal identity after the wild ride he had been on with Beatlemania.... as great and important as the Beatles were, they had gotten huge and popular to a degree that was absolutely absurd, and people were placing outrageous expectations on them... this song is John telling people to come back to earth, and to recover his life and focus on his relationship with Yoko... what does he believe in? .... he believes in finding himself, and in his love for the person he had chosen as his life partner.

"God is a concept by which we measure our pain" John is trying to say that people use god (or other believes such as kennedy, kings etc) to fill a hole (i.e. pain) in their life, the bigger the hole the more god they need. By saying that he "only believes in Yoko and me", he is saying that he has no more holes, no more pain, he has everything that he needs, he is truly happy.

John Lennon was always searching for "The Answer". Most of the items he references are things he tried, often very publicly. The conclusion he came to, after his obsessive search is that the only thing you need is belief in yourself and someone you love. By the way, the Hitler line is saying "I may not believe in some of the things you do, but that doesn't make me evil".

The Beatles were already falling apart. Lennon claims they fell apart when there manager died. He also claimed he wanted to leave the Beatles when the band was in its prime. He always wanted to meet an artist who had a strong personality, and he found that in yoko.

A dreamweaver is on who creates a dream. The Beatles was John's band, he created then. So he was the dreamweaver but now he's reborn. He wrote and sang "lI Am The Walrus so sang "I was the walrus but now I'm John. And so dear friends, you'll just have to carry on. The dream is over". The Beatles just broke up. Its his delaration of the break-up. Its a sad sobg for Beathes fans. And John's not preaching on Imagine. He asking us to imagine a would with and without certain things.

Wonderful discussion; very brave of Christians to take on this song. Thank you for taking the time to think about it. John was a poet and a searcher. He went through difficult phases in his life and had to find his own reason for being. He shared his journey with us, whether we were on the same journey or not, and I think it was cathartic for him. With regard to atheism, I think what we have faith in is pure love. We haven't assigned a deity to it but we believe that love is the only salvation of the human race. Perhaps we use gods across religions to put a face on "love", e.g., Jesus or whoever, which means we're all sort of on the same page but it's the language that divides us. Love for each other, the planet, the universe....it is the meaning of life. Perhaps this transcends death and provides fuel for the future? I haven't a clue, but witnessing love given and received in this world is the most beautiful and heartwarming experience for me. Raised Roman Catholic but never believed in a god. Tried but couldn't. I totally believe in the power of love though. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for allowing me to share mine with you.

2:35 I think this is possibly the only actual genuine first time hearing any song reaction vid I have seen on youtube, I nearly choked my beer at the initial surpressed anger. I watched it the whole way through and at first I thought you were going to skirt the whole point of the song but you got to it about midway had some mild discussion before moving the convo onto me me me with a lot of physical self reinforcement like mimicing breastfeeding by touching lips, same thing with fingers and beads and general nervousness. I do not mean it in a critical way I just find it interesting peoples reaction when what they hold to be true is challenged, Im sure I would react in the same way if someone told me the sky is green, because I know it is generally blue. My take on this song is he is saying you do not need any pre ordained system of the culture you were born into to realize God. He's saying it's all in your head as imagination, which without going into specifics, it basically is. I should say here perhaps that I don't believe in God, I know "it" to be real. Good video though thankyou I really enjoyed it. God Bless John Lennon.

Yoko was not Chinese, she was Japanese. And your step dad is wrong, she didn't break up the Beatles, she was just a convenient scapegoat for people!! All 4 of the Beatles had families they wanted to be with, and they were all finding different musical paths to follow!! After working together for so many years, they all needed space to grow on their own!!

After the breakup of the Beatles, John Lennon was disillusioned about everything he loved. He no longer believed in Jesus, Elvis and Zimmerman (Bob Dylan) among other things he didn't believe in. (For example, Yoko Ono believed in Numerology.) Lennon was brought up in the Christian church. He loved Elvis and Bob Dylan. Not to mention, Paul had betrayed him over the Beatles breakup. It was a rough period in his life. This song conveys that.
