Abigail was first born dead on July 7th, 1777. Every King Diamond album is a full story. Hearing one song out of context is a tough position to be in.

The album is called "Abigail", King Diamond's second record in 1987. Maybe the person who requested "Abigail" was requesting the album and not the song?

From wikipedia: "Abigail tells the story of a young couple, Miriam Natias and Jonathan La'Fey, who move into an old mansion that La'Fey inherited. It takes place in the summer of 1845. At their arrival they are warned by seven horsemen not to move into the house because if they do "18 will become 9." They do not heed the warning and proceed to move into the mansion. During their first night, Jonathan meets with Count de La'Fey, the Family Ghost, who is a deceased relative. The ghost shows him a casket in which a corpse of a stillborn child, Abigail, rests. The ghost informs him that Miriam is carrying the spirit of Abigail and that the child will soon be reborn. He insists that Jonathan must kill Miriam at once to prevent the rebirth. The narration then relates the story of what happened to the Count and his wife: on 7 July 1777, the Count had discovered his wife had been unfaithful to him, and was pregnant with an illegitimate child. Enraged, he threw the Countess down the stairs, breaking her neck and causing the child to be stillborn. The Count had the body of the Countess cremated, and the stillborn fetus he named Abigail and had mummified and laid to rest in a sarcophagus, the Count having an inexplicable urge to preserve Abigail for the future. The narration then returns to the summer of 1845, during which Jonathan and Miriam are beset by a range of omens; the church bell rings despite nobody being inside to ring it, flowers die, unwholesome stenches fill the house and in the dining room the table is discovered set for 3. In one incident an empty cradle is discovered by Jonathan swaying in the air, with both him and Miriam insisting that they didn't bring it with them. The next day, Miriam is clearly pregnant and the fetus develops quickly; Jonathan realises that the family ghost was speaking the truth. The fatal crisis begins when Jonathan accuses Abigail of possessing Miriam, and Abigail (through Miriam) admits it. Jonathan is terrified and considers getting a priest to exorcise Miriam - Miriam, however, exercising a moment of control, urges him to cast her down the stairs to kill her just as the Count had slain the Countess and Abigail's original incarnation. Therefore, Jonathan pretends to give in to Abigail's demands, and suggests to Abigail (once she regains control of Miriam) that she should come down to the family crypt so she can be reborn where she died. However, as the couple stands at the top of the stairs, Jonathan is distracted and the possessed Miriam pushes Jonathan down the stairs. Miriam gives birth to Abigail, but dies shortly afterwards, her last sight being of Abigail's "yellow eyes"; supposedly her ghost can be heard screaming on the stairs in July ever after. The seven horsemen arrive at the mansion and discover the baby Abigail in the sarcophagus, eating something too horrifying for the narrator to mention (though the fact that it is found in the sarcophagus suggests that Abigail is eating her own previous body). Appalled, they take her away to bury her in a hidden chapel in the forest with seven silver spikes driven through her body (a burial heard as the intro to the album), in the hope that this will prevent a further resurrection."

I did more digging. The story and the song both were inspired by a recurring dream that he was having. He took the date of the story from a random headstone that someone had sent him a picture of. I was hoping for something better, something with more factual events. But either way I am impressed.

This entire record is a masterpiece. Also of note is the number recurring 9 them. Every number x9, when added/broken down equals 9. July 7, 1777 added equals 36, 3+6 equals 9.

@@mortimerbustos4487 True; more of a libertarian & Halloween enthusiast. Although, Don't Break The Oath is a more Satanic recording than most Black Metal recordings. La Veyan Satanism is more libertarian than dark arts/devil worshipping. Satan Worship is too tied into Christian dogma. I would say, at least La Veyan Satanism breaks with Judeo Christian dogma, and advocates a break and a more individualist and libertarian worldview. This Satanism does not identify with any spiritual or demonic being(s), pro or contra. It is more about a liberation from such constricting concepts.

Greg K no dude. Fatal Portrait has only 4 songs (technically 5 tracks) that are connected out of 11. The first 5 songs of Spiders Lullabye are their own individual short stories. Six feet under is an alternate chapter of Conspiracy. Then the last 4 songs are one story. Mercyful Fate initially broke up in 1985 due to artistic differences and then King Diamond was formed by 3 out of the original 5 members. Fatal Portrait (the first King Diamond album) was released in 1986. Two different bands bud.

You guys are on point. Yes, most of King Diamond’s songs are from concept albums. Even hearing it out of context you guys nailed it. King Diamond’s falsetto voice takes some getting used to. He is a musical genius and his lineup although different all the time, he picks very talented virtuosos. King Diamond has influenced many genres. Thrash metal and Death metal in particular. Especially his guitar player Andy Laroque. His former drummer Mikkey Dee went on to Motörhead right up until Lemmy died. He has a fantastic theatrical live show.

The black metal reference is more for Mercyful Fate instead of his King Diamond band, in which they tell ghost stories. The reference for black metal is by their lyrics and imagery. For more theatrical songs go to King Diamond - The trial

Kind Diamond used to front the band Mercyful Fate.Maybe that’s the band that you heard was big in terms of the black metal scene.Anyway, thee main reason I’m dropping you this line is because I thought maybe you might be interested in knowing that King Diamond is an actual satanist.

King Diamond (the band) was the Mercyful Fate vocalist's solo act. The main connection between modern black metal and Mercyful Fate (and King DIamdond) would be in the satanic and spooky imagery and aesthetics: between Denmark's Mercyful Fate and England's Venom in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the two bands set the tone for the dark side of heavy metal that gave metal it's reputation during the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s. Venom, as much a punk rock act as a metal act, were clearly "trolling" audiences with their act, King Diamond (the singer) wasn't really quite so obvious: he really seemed to take the whole ghoulish, spooky, master of evil act and run with it, rarely appearing in public out of character, while his crew would tell stories about King Diamond sleeping in coffins and such. On the rare occasions you do catch King Diamond out of character, he seems like a totally normal guy (and before Mercyful Fate started using the satanic imagery, the predecessor bands - Danger Zone and The Brats - performed some of the same songs with much more standard rock lyrics and a much less theatrical voice!) I think you can kind of consider King Diamond to be like the Stephen King, Svengooli, or Vincent Price of heavy metal: he could have and maybe would have done something different and more "normal" and been OK with it, but then somehow found himself playing a spooky role, getting famous for it, all while having the time of his life, and thus making a living with a fun career in something he'd probably otherwise just only be able to look forward to enjoying doing for free once a year at Halloween. He's clearly having a blast putting on the costumes and creepy makeup and vampire fangs, then getting up on a stage made up like a haunted house full of candles and cobwebs to tell a bunch of cheering fans a story about ghosts, witches, and vampires, and ghouls.... The later black metal acts took the whole thing a lot more seriously, mixing Mercyful Fate/King Diamond's theatrics with Venom's crude and sloppy do-it-yourself act and much of the musical style of a third early black metal band, from Sweden: Bathory (essentially a one-man-band that came across as a tighter, faster, darker, more mysterious, atmospheric, and evil Venom clone.) A fourth band, from Switzerland, Hellhammer (who reinvented themselves after a couple demos and EPs as Celtic Frost), also helped set the template for modern black metal by adding in an artistic element on top of their own crude, sloppy, weird, mysterious, theatrical, and dark aspects. In short, the connection between Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, Venom, Bathory, and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost alone to modern black metal won't be very obvious, but realizing that modern black metal borrowed a little bit from all of those earlier band as a foundation for a new sound and image might help tie that connection together.

Abigail is a great concept record. Few are better storytellers than King Diamond. Most of his themes center around intricate ghost stories of demon possession, etc. Most of his so-called satanic songs are with his old band Mercyful Fate. They were also a huge influence of Metallica and one of the greatest metal bands ever. Please check out Curse Of The Pharoes or Come To the coven. If you don't own Don't Break The Oath or Melissa, you're not really metal. : ) And he can still deliver all of this live too.

Very cool song, thanks for doing it. Huge King Diamond/Mercyful Fate fan here. Yep, it's a concept album, & there's already comments concerning what it's about, so I won't add to them. Black Horsemen from this album is an epic song, one of the band's best. There's a song on Fatal Portrait titled, Halloween. The Portrait & Charon from that album would be great songs to do too. His voice might take some time to get used to, but the stories he tells are interesting & the music is great, especially the first 4 albums, & yes, he's a spooky guy. You're one step closer to The Oath by Mercyful Fate. All Hail The King! \,,/_(-,-)_\,,/

Whoo! hoo! It was awesome to see your Kind Diamond reaction. Vin is really smart to catch that it was a concept album. But yeah would love to see a full album listening for Halloween. I recommend The Jonah. King Diamond used to be in Merciful Fate. That band influenced Slayer where pretty much in Kerry King's words their Hell Awaits album is a heavier version of Merciful Fate. Abigail and Them are his two best albums per public opinion, both are horror concepts, Mikkey Dee (drums) & Andy Laroque (guitar) two of the very best in metal (ask any real metalhead). Mercyful Fate is King Diamonds band that predates his solo work and one of the most influential metal bands of all time (Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica all list them as a huge influence).

I prefer Kings earlier work with Mercyful Fate, the songs stand on their own better...most of the King Diamond solo work is concept albums. They were a huge influence on black metal, thrash metal, pretty much all extreme metal to follow. I think their main influence is the subject matters he tackled and the theatrics. They were one of the first openly evil/scare/satan bands, and King Diamonds appearance is just very evil looking. I knew you guys were growing in your experience in metal when you accepted King Diamonds vocals without even blinking. King Diamond still tours and puts on a great live show, very theatric. *Mercyful Fate, The Oath" (1984) and...Need to react to one of the other early influencers - *Venom, At War With Satan* (1984) These two bands were huge influencers of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and then all of the death/black metal genres.

"Follow me to the crypt" and "remember the stairs, the only way"... This is explained in the song The 7th Day Of July 1777. On that date, Jonathan's ancestor, Count de La Fey discovered his wife had been unfaithful to him and the baby she was carrying was by the other man. In his rage, he pushed her down the slippery stairs of the mansion. The countess broke her neck, the baby was stillborn, and the cruel Count gave the fetus a gruesome burial - hence the curse. When Jonathan and Miriam inherited the mansion in 1845, the spirit of Abigail saw an opportunity in a pregnant Miriam, by possessing her and being "reborn" through the baby. But Jonathan received a cryptic warning (upon his arrival to the mansion) and some clues by his ancestor via a "dream" (or was it a dream?) regarding the stairs. Jonathan deduced the only way to stop the rebirth and halt the curse is to repeat history, and push Miriam & baby down the stairs to die. Not to give spoilers, but it did not quite turn out that way... Listen to the whole album, or at least read the lyrics (which are kind of vague and cryptic, but will still provide more context and details than just one song).
