I beg to differ, i think he went the other way. Sure mercyful fate loved the pageantry of satanism, with songs like come to the sabbath, into the coven, etc., but king diamonds spooky album concepts are dripping with LaVeyan satanic philosophy, he just doesn't put horns on it, if you will. Songs like pictures in red, or anything off that album, are talking about how two children murdered by their father are haunting the singer because the afterlife had a clerical error and listed one child as a suicide, damning his soul, unless the other child can convince the singer to give up his own. That's classic laveyan anti child abuse, plus classic laveyan thought on how flawed and arbitrary god's heirarchy seems(the "why does god let bad things happen to good people" argument, basically"). In Abigail, again, the soul of a stillborn child possesses a pregnant newlywed for it's chance at life after it was desecrated due to christian fear the stillborn(born 7/07/1777) was the antichrist.

Can't believe you did this song. Such a creepy song. Everything about this song is creepy. Love the opening, love the guitars. When I first heard this song in 1984 these vocals were the scariest vocals Ive ever heard. This was long before death metal vocal became popular. In my opinion these vocals are more evil than death metal vocals. Love the guitar work in this band. Michael Denner and Hank Sherman are such an underrated guitar duo.

Lol. "oh...this is a love song to Satan?" Haha. hopefully they're as amused as most of us we're who listened to this stuff when it came out. Anyone taking lyrical content of metal music seriously has deeper issues than the song writers or any "message" it's trying to send. With Metal, especially stuff very good musically and technically, it's all about the music. Lyrics are just there to give the singers something to mouth melody too. That's why we don't listen to Bach for the lyrics. Get it?

The roots of Black Metal is usually traced back to Venom's first two, Mercyful Fate's first EP, Bathory's first, and then a bit later you get Hellhammer (Satanic Rites/Triumph of Death), Celtic Frost (Morbid Tales/Emperors Return), Slayer - but left the black metal elements behind after their first - (Show No Mercy), Sodom (In the Sign of Evil). Then you have bands like Sarcofago and Beherit who turned up the noise factor and started War Metal, but that's a story for another day. Black Metal didn't really take on the typical Black Metal sound until you get to the second wave at the later end of the 80's/early 90's. The first wave was mostly bands pulling ideals from Thrash Metal(Sodom, Slayer) and Traditional Metal (Mercyful Fate/Running Wild) Songs I could rec from these bands: Bathory - Reaper Venom - Black Metal Mercyful Fate - Nuns Have No Fun ;) Hellhammer - Messiah Celtic Frost - Procreation of the Wicked Slayer - Black Magic Sodom - Outbreak of Evil Darkthrone - To Walk the Infernal Fields is a great song if you want to see how the sound progressed when the second wave took over.

King Diamonds vocals are an acquired taste you either love them or hate them. Also the album artwork is second to none. King Diamond, being a real Satanist, meaning he does not believe in a personification of Satan, meaning, he is closer to an atheist than to a deist, can freely make this kind of lyrics because for him there is no risk. I'm an atheist, and I wouldn't think twice about "invoking" Satan, or "blaspheming" against any god because for me they're all non-existent, they're fairy-tales. Is like you insulting somehow the gods of Olympus. So, he makes these songs as verses of horror, like snippets of nightmares the way Bosch or Goya depicted them in some of their works. King Diamond is the absolute best when it come to mixing music with storytelling and horror.

Quotes from famous musician and High ranking Church of Satan member and very close friend to Anton LaVey - King Diamond "Satanism is about the Powers of the Unknown. I have had hundreds of strange supernatural experiences with the occult, the other side, the beyond, whatever you want to call it that proves there is a spiritual world that can cross over into our world. Satanism is a life philosophy so within it you can have your own religion, any religion you want. Or take from various religions or your own whatever makes you happy. I have my own beliefs and Religiously Satan on a spiritual level stands for the Powers of Darkness, the Powers of the Unknown which are always all around us at all times. This is the best way to talk about these Spirits and Powers. Not a god or a devil as both of them are christian god's and that has nothing to do with Satanism. Of course there are different types of satanism. And I never wear gold as that is not healthy for you! Must need something bad and use that during ritual then you might be able to get help from these powers I believe are all around us. But that is only if they like you. I do not believe in the two christians beings god or the Devil, I believe in the Powers of the Unknown, Powers of Darkness, The Powers of the Occult what ever name you want to use. . I have done Satanic Rituals and have seen and heard spirits. Some people like to call "Them" God or the Devil or whatever, but I do not believe there is all one good and one all bad power. I believe there are many, many different Spirits and Powers that exist and that they are not good or evil, like humans they have both inside of them and I always treat them with the highest amount of respect and feel that respect returned by Them. It is massive mutual respect. Not Power, but Powers, Big difference. I believe we are one and the same me and these Unknown Forces. You really have to respect them for the incredible power they have. I believe they come to those who they feel can handle it and who will be faithful believers." In the song "Welcome Princess of Hell" you hear me singing to these spirits and powers and they sing back to me. They came to me to let me know they are here for me on my journey and that they are behind me and that they wish me good luck so I see them as my protectors almost like guardian angels. We all live several lives so that our powers/souls can grow in order to reach a higher plane and join with something greater. Our powers live in a human shell several times that will enable us to go on to a new life form a higher plane of being or join one day with a larger greater force. But 99 percent of the population live by the Satanic Philosophy whether they know it or not. As Anton LaVey even told me that Satanism is simply a life philosophy and NOT a religion. Satanism is basically Humanism. Satanism is based on logic and things that are proven which is why it could never be a religion as religion is based on things that cannot be proven. And that’s why I say that these powers of darkness are always welcome in my home. It’s as if the powers of the unknown came and said ‘Hey, we will stay with you and help you.’ That’s what I feel.” Personally I do not use electrical lighting at home and on my Satanic Altar or in the studio when I record vocals, only black candles as electrical lighting drives away the spirits and I love having them near me. People who see Satanism from the Christian view point are not treating these powers with respect and that is very dangerous. I once actually summoned a spirit in order to prove they are real to a girl who doubted and Satan came. My wife will not look in our mirror in fear something will come out. In Satanism you are your own God. LaVey felt and I agree that we are all individuals born with different needs and views and so he felt everyone should make up their own mind about what to believe in spiritually if anything at all which is why he left a huge void in the Satanic Bible when it came to spirituality or any kind of religious beliefs and so within the Satanic Philosophy a person can still be a Christian if that fulfills their spiritual needs. Satan also means the Opposite, Inverted, Reversed which is why we wear the Satanic crosses and pentagrams. Satan means the opposite of religion. Satanism is living out your feelings and instincts without feeling it is a sin, enjoy yourself while you are here now while you can and have your own individual beliefs. One thing I consider almost mandatory though is believing there are powers around us. And you can use these powers to help yourself or those you care about. Or throw these powers at people in a negative way. I am not religious at all but you can say I am spiritual due to my experiences and beliefs. The Satanic bible is not really a bible because a bible is for religion so it should be called a book of philosophy instead. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. When people see the word ‘Satan’ they see only negative. Satan is not only bad, to me. It represents both sides of everything. I don’t believe in the Christian devil. “Christianity has both God and the devil. I believe there is neither of these two. I believe in the powers of the unknown, which I have experienced many times. I know that rituals work. I don’t do them often because you can easily misuse them. They will get back at you if you don’t respect them. Rituals can channel the forces that surround us all the time but I respect the powers and will not abuse them in any way. The Satanic Bible is 70 percent Philosophy and 30 percent magic. Satan is the power of the universe. Satan to me is the Powers of Darkness, not a man with horns. Some people think Satanism is what the Christian church portrays it to be. If you are as bad and as evil as you can be and you think that’s Satanism then you have become part of the Christian religion. That is Christian Satanism which is not what I am about at all.

If you are still thinking about doing a Halloween episode, I would suggest you do a whole album reaction to "The Puppet Master" by King Diamond. It's not outright satanic as his Mercyful Fate stuff and not dealing with ghosts or possessions like Abigail or Them/Conspiracy, so I think it wouldn't be *too* scary for you guys. It's still a really good horror story though and has some amazing and chilling songs on it.

When the roots of Black Metal are discussed, it's usually the following bands: *Venom* (They did an album called "Black Metal"), *Hellhammer* and their follow-up *Celtic Frost* , (early) *Bathory* and *Mercyful Fate* . Musically speaking, I'd say most of these bands aren't Black Metal in the sense of the genre as we know it today. But they laid the foundation in terms of atmosphere, attitude and content. Sonically speaking, I'd locate the roots in the early phase of the so-called "second wave" of Black Metal in Norway: bands like Darkthrone and Mayhem.

This was one of my favorite songs (musically), mainly for the bass riff. I used to play along when I was much younger. Lyrically, juuuuuust a little over the top. Still, love this song and album for the musicianship. As always, please react to Napalm Death - "Suffer the Children".

"By the symbol" is just bad English, I think. I always figured that they probably intended to say something like, "by God's designation" or "by God's command." There are a lot of goofy lyrics in early Fate songs. They're a Danish band and this song was written in their second year together as a band, back when their English was still rough.

Sori needs to break away from her societal stereotypes about Satanists. The mere idea of thinking someone would sacrifice kids in the current times, even despite their religious beliefs, is asinine. In this one song the band processes so many good riffs, solos, melodies and fragments of lyrics. Other bands could build their whole career on so many ideas. I know it's probably been said, but they weren't black metal, obviously. They influenced the start of black metal because of their satanic and evil themes, theatrics, use of corpse paint, and overall atmosphere. Not only that but they influenced many bands of other sub genres. Metallica, Slayer, Dave Mustaine, and countless others. And even though King is a true Satanist he doesn't believe in a deity In the biblical sense. These songs were for shock value.

It's funny how people say Mercyful Fate AREN'T Black Metal... People, in the early days, Black Metal simply meant that it was SATANIC metal music! Mercyful Fate was VERY Satanic and even more so than Venom at that time. Stop trying to be historians and get your damn facts straight!! Plus, the influence they had on other extreme metal subgenres is because at that time, they were very EXTREME!! They had elements of speed metal, (proto) thrash metal - they were a fucking hybrid of so many styles of different subgenres that weren't even NAMED yet!!!!
@connorrekdahl3754
@connorrekdahl3754 5 жыл бұрын
steve dooley a genre is based off of a sound and atmosphere of the music, not the subject matter, a Christian could make its own version of a black metal song and not be about Satan and it would still be black metal, paired with Christian metal, like burzum, it’s not about Satan whatso ever... still black metal, I see what you are trying to say tho

@@connorrekdahl3754 I've been listening to metal music since the 80s and have understood genre differentiation from the get-go. Mercyful Fate has all the elements in place as I mentioned above. At that time they WERE considered Black Metal. NOW, they're considered one of the bands that was part of the FIRST WAVE OF BLACK METAL. There's a reason for that. One reason people try to downplay Mercyful Fate in this is because they weren't afraid to utilize MELODY whereas most others wouldn't.

As a guitar player for 25 years, and an ardent live to die for Metal lifestyle, this is one of my fav. Albums. King Diamond was an opera singer in his past and found a unique way to utilize his skills. Also, as a former occultist for 8 years, and having drawn from bands like Deicide, Venom, Sodom, I currently record at The Sound Of Music in RVA. No longer in the Occult, just to say the albims strength is the melodic tones and vocals interlacing, can be hypnotizing and a type of feel good music when your puffin on the greens. Love the review though, good job.
