I was born in 1966, in Portland Oregon to a pot smoking, divorced, feminist who was a professional college student who also had to work full time. In the 70s, I was taken to work (Emmanuel Hospital... first trauma center with a life flight!) & Portland State University with Mother, quite often. I remember the women's studies classes the most as they had major impact on my mind. Of course, I was taught that a fetus was a clump of cells and "my body my choice". I was also educated in Catholic schools and attended Mass 2 to 4 times a week from the time I was tiny until age 12. I married young and had my first child and then a second back-to-back. I didn't know I was suffering from postpartum depression (suicidal actually) and I allowed my husband and best friend to convince me I should have an abortion. I was 20 years old. Something in me felt that it was a bad idea and I resisted but they persisted and I relented. As I lay on the operating table after the procedure I came to out of anesthesia, I said "was it a boy or a girl"? The evil doctor cut his eyes at me with hatred and sneered "what do you care"? The weight and gravity of what I had just done fell in my gut as I realized the truth which was that I had just murdered my child. I immediately began to rage and flail, I only remember several Jaws dropping and I was out again. It is the worst most evil thing I have ever done and something that, as I live out my life and I am one month shy of 58 years old, i have learned to live with but it never feels "better with time", actually it is worse, when i became a grandmother it came up again, bigger than life. And yes I've been to confession, several times. I know. I do forgive myself but it just makes me so sad!

I understand. Many times I have cried over the terrible same choice I made many years ago. A few years ago the realization and guilt hit me hard as I was walking my dogs one winter day. I had a misarrange at the age of 17 which, many years later an OB-GYN, hearing how it happened, said that my ob-gyn at that time, know ing that I was not married, caused by giving me the wrong hormone. after that miscarriage, too early to determine the sex, I was on the Pill for 10 years. After my conversion, I read a medical book which explained that the Pill which I took prevented IMPLANTATION of the new conception in the womb. It did NOT prevent ovulation. Hence, I don't know how many babies I aborted, unawares, by taking the Pill. I grieved and repented when I learned what I had done and then I went to Confession. Sadly, the priest who gave me Absolution thought nothing of it, that I was grieving over nothing. But I received Absolution despite the priest's lack of belief in my sin.

When I volunteered at a Crisis pregnancy mission in the 90s there was emphasis on abortion recovery...naming the baby, praying for him or her. The Catholic community here is mostly well to do and connected and was indifferent to all this. Many thought helping such girls only encouraged them to get pregnant for the help. I certainly never met such a person, but that was a convenient excuse. I thought it was very strange that the evangelicals and Baptists there were more into the communion of saints and healing of families across the veil that Catholics were. However as a Catholic I am no longer surprised by much. I tell myself, Christian is as Christian does....and even Catholic is as Catholic does. My husband made a beautiful small casket with a painting for the prayer group naming of these babies and healing. It was beautiful...white with lovely lining. Where Catholic moral theology can really help is from Alphonsus Liguouri who always insisted the mother was least to blame...the failure of love and support from the family, father, and friends was the worst failure as the mother was stressed, nauseated, perhaps broke and under duress. Like St. Paul, Liguouri always insisted that failing in Love is total failure in life....no spirituality, no tongues, no sacrifices, no fasting, no preaching, no scripture quoting.... all just a waste if we fail in love.

I don't know if anyone can answer this, but I asked a priest about baptising aborted babies and he said it cannot be done because you have to have a body in order to baptize. Yet there was a priest that used to do this. Does this baptism have to be done by a priest, or can a lay person do it through prayer?

Some priests are sometimes wrong . They are not perfect in their theology or even their belief . So the one who said that you can do it is right . And if you are in a situation where you can not ask a priest to do baptise them , you can do it yourself , asking the Holy Spirit to come , and saying : i baptise you "X" , in the name of the father, the son , and the holy spirit . And the poor babies who did not make it into this world because of miscarriage or the personal choice their mother made to abort them. They need a name & they need to have the baptism of desire from their parents & perhaps others. Offer your Holy Communion in love for them. We need to know that every life counts. They are so innocent & defenseless. This is a sin that has to be addressed before we leave this Earth. If involved in any way, ask God for His forgiveness. 😢

Yes. This is considered an emergency baptism which can be done by laity. If all of the priests were gone tomorrow, we would still have baptisms and weddings.
