I’m a white gal, born in 1964. Live Action Christie was my favorite Barbie and is the only one I still own from my childhood. I remember choosing her at the store because she had the best outfit and the most beautiful lipstick. I still love her but, dang, lost that cool outfit somewhere along the way. I still kick myself about that!

My mom was born in ‘63. Her obsession with dolls from her childhood was what got me (an extreme tomboy) into collecting toys from a really young age. I always love learning more about them. She was a big Christy fan too, said the same thing about her outfit too. She doesn’t own her original doll, but she got a replacement years later. Too cool, I love the vibes.

Texan white girl here. One fateful night in '98 my folks decided to take the family to McDonald's for dinner. I had never been there before, so my four-year-old mind was blown when I got a tiny Christie doll with my meal! She was my first Barbie and I absolutely LOVED her and took her everywhere with me. Sadly, at a friend's sleepover, I woke to discover that Christie was missing! I thought I'd never see her again, and was genuinely upset she was never found. Twenty-ish years later, I randomly remembered her and found and bought one off ebay. I cannot describe to you the feeling I had when she arrived and I got to pull open the bag and hold her again. I have a collection of actual dolls now, but she's the most special to me, after all, she was my first one!

As a little girl (white American) I wanted the black vet Barbie so I had a doll that looked like some of my friends. I was DEVESTATED that she was just a different color but otherwise looked exactly the same. She was nothing like my beautiful friends. Years later I was a care giver and helping one of the kids clean up when I picked up a black Barbie. She had her own face mold and beautiful tight curls in an afro. I cried. If it matter that much to my white behind I can't even imagine how much it mattered to black and brown kids.

Benetton Christie was one of my first ever Barbie dolls, and a core character in my own little Barbie world. In hindsight, I wonder where my parents got her, since I barely remember ever seeing a Christie on shelves. :/ Scandinavian toy stores in the 90s were kind of notorious for only stocking the white dolls, and my quest for Stacie’s Black friend Janet ended up involving getting a relative to buy her in the US. And that’s not to mention my to this day fruitless search for a Marina. They put them in the catalogues, damnit, why were they not on shelves?!?

Props for giving recommendations where to go to see Black creators speaking on this topic as well. I'm white myself but that's always a nice touch! I hate how in some countries black Barbie dolls are rare, probably just understocked with the idea that people from less racially diverse countries wouldn't want them as much which just isn't true. I collect vintage Barbie dolls, and one of my favorites is Malibu Christie. I managed to get the 1975 version, which has the most beautiful dark chocolate colored skin. The other Malibu Christie's don't look nearly as stunning imo. I also have a tnt Julia doll that has the hair which faded into burgundy. To be honest the shade is GORGEOUS and I prefer it to the original black. Brad is like my holy Grail Barbie doll. His face mold is 1000% better than Ken's from that time. Haven't been able to find one under $100. I've heard of Kitty Perkins before. She seems like a badass. At one point she designed over 5% of all the Barbie fashions- and that is A LOT!

This is going to sound odd but genuinely curious. I watched an episode of Maude where she took in an african American girl named Francie for the weekend as sort of a foreign exchange program? I'm a millennial so the tv show was a bit before my time in the 70's but kind of ironic talking about a doll that has mod & francie & african American girl doll's wondering if they got the idea for the episode (storyline & names) inspired by the doll (Francie) or just coincidence. Both the tv show & francie doll's were released in the 70's~ 🤷♀️✌️ The only 2 doll's I specifically own from the 70's are: Baby Brother Tender Love & Newborn Baby Tender Love all of my barbies I still have are from the early 90's when I was little~ 🤷♀️✌️
